Expanse Blu-ray guide for Australians

I'm looking for advice from those who have gone before how best to buy the blu-rays for seasons 1 - 6. I currently have seasons 1-3 on order from the UK but the distributor reports they may have to cancel due to unknown delays. There are some on ebay but they seem to be Chinese and may be copies.

Amazon reviews frequently state issues especially with seasons 4 - 6.

Australia is region B (Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Australia, and New Zealand. )

What's your experience and advice please?

Goliath guns

I always loved Expanse for its realistic take on sci fi genre, this series was my first contact with hard sci fi where space battles aren't WWII dogfights and "land troops" aren't using some magic plasma laser tachyon rifles, but instead have recoiless carbines with bullets unable to penetrate inner hull of ships. And because of that MCRN power armor main gun is buggin' me.

I can get behind that it's wrist mounted, in zero-g environment it's probably easy to lose your rifle and they have advanced aim assist bulid in so main con of wrist mounted weapons - reduced accuracy coming from smaller range of movement compared to hand held gun - is negated.

However rotary gun in infantry equipment doesn't make sense. IRL Gatling-type weapons are usually equipped on fast moving vehicles (planes, helicopters) or are used against fast moving objects (CIWS) because huge rate of fire is necessary in those cases. In infantry vs infantry situations very high RPM is just wasting precious bullets, so why MCRN and later Laconia equipped marines with not one but TWO wrist mounted Gatling guns.

It's kinda overkill for rule of cool in my opinion. And I don't mind rule of cool, I'm WH40K fan, and Bobbie is badass in her Betsy but it's weird decision in this series OR I I'm missing something and there is some good explanation for this.

Anyone know where I can read the books online (IE at a computer) that isnt amazon?

Howdy all. I like to read at work, on my work computer, but for some reason amazon books just doesnt work here. I guess its cause of a content filter or something. Anyone know a good place to read the books online? One that just gives a pdf would be fantastic, but anything helps.

What is the range of The Expanse's missiles used in space combat by their ships?

I'm currently drafting a hard scifi setting for fun, and I'd want to consider missiles and their effective range on a realistic standpoint. I've seen some fight scenes where the ship's engage in long range, and that a railgun has a 1000km range which is considered "short range" in the setting, so I'm curious about the lengths a missile can actually reach in The Expanse.

Rewatching for the umpteenth time and noticed something new

I'm sure this has been brought up.....

But given that the protomolecule learns from its interactions the way the crew of the Roci approaches and deals with the hybrid in episode 13 of season 2 feels pretty clutch.

Not just them attacking it after throwing the bomb out of the hatch, but also how Holden sends Amos away for his own safety due to the air leak in his suit while Holden is essentially dieing while pinned to the wall.

Could that have helped lead to the rings being built?

(I haven't read the books.....I apologize if this is better outlined in them)

I'm having feelings.

I haven't watched the TV show (that's next on the list), but I started the first of the nine audibooks of the main series back in January or February and I've been marching through them ever since, one after the other.

Now I'm on the last book, on the second to last chapter - "Naomi and Jim" - and I need to keep pausing it because I listen to it while I take walks around the neighborhood and I keep crying. I don't want it to end, and I'm so sad.

There have been so many awesome moments in these books, and I remember thinking, early on, "Wow, it will be forever until I'm at the end of this..." But here I am. Here I am.

James Fucking Holden, man, and the crew of the Rocinante.

question about Mr. Dresden after book 1...

This is based on my recollection from a couple weeks ago. I don't have a copy of the book anymore (returned to library) so forgive me if my recollection is faulty and I just plain misread the paragraphs.....

When we're first introduced to "Mr. Dresden", its from the POV of Miller, and he's watching the video of "Mr. Dresden" giving his presentation on the potential uses of the protomolecule. Miller continually refers to the man in the video as the "sociopath" (maybe it was "psychopath"?).

But the "sociopath" that Miller is watching on video begins his presentation by addressing a Mr. Dresden, not by identifying himself as "Mr. Dresden".

So then how does Miller recognize Mr. Dresden later in the book, if the "sociopath" on screen was giving a presentation to Mr. Dresden, and not Mr. Dresden himself?

Plot hole in Nemesis Games?

I remember from Cibola Burn the first Ilus settlers to be Belters from Ganymede, right? Ilus is said to have a gravity larger than Earth. In Nemesis Games, many belters become radically violent, because they say they can’t live on the new planets. That doesn’t go together at all. Did I miss or misunderstand something?

I know this is a stupid question I‘m sorryyy

Reading Miller having been the object of “affection” by Miller-like older men

I see people say they identify and empathize with Miller all the time, and that’s valid and just as interesting as everyone else’s subjective impression.

For me, you’ve can have been parts of Miller, or you’ve been the target of a man’s creepy obsession and objectification (or both).

In a world where being a prepubescent girl and being whistled and leered at by grown men can be the depressing norm, with that being a frequent and ongoing experience for women, and our culture fetishizing youth but especially sexually objectifying all but especially young women, it’s just difficult to constantly see that kind of low level creepiness represented both in reality and fiction.

It’s gotten better, where if it’s present it can be called out, but honestly for me I’ve never felt a character’s misogyny and objectification of women has added much to the story except for riling me up and reminding me of how fucked up things are. And a lot of times it’s not a writer making an intentional point to depict and critique misogyny, it just comes naturally to them, and it’s unexamined.

In a sense Julie is the typical “fridged” character, and their age difference just adds a level of creepiness to it. When you look at the statistics of how older actors are constantly romantically paired with women who stay the same young age as the men get older, it just reaches a point where you’re sick of it, both in real life as well as in fiction.

I wanted to add this to offer another subjective view on how I experienced reading this character. It just reminded me of all the times men my father or grandfather’s age have objectified me romantically and sexually, creating some ideal in their own mind while ignoring my actual words (kinda like Miller does in the beginning when he refuses to believe that Julie wasn’t some helpless girl who needed to be saved by him). Trying to convince me that their infatuation with me isn’t just a sign of their emotional immaturity and unwillingness to deal with women their own age because they’re less manipulatable. I’ll never not find that shit creepy. Sure Bob, you’re 60 and this 20something you left your family for is your “soulmate”.

In general I really enjoy this series, but I truly could have done without the simmering creepery in Miller’s storyline. He could have fulfilled his arc of washed up loser to sacrificial hero without that creepy age difference romantic aspect

Currently reading the books for the first time and I think I found a mistake.

Watched the show and loved it so I started reading the books. I just started Nemesis Games and a couple times Naomi is said to "look up" at Holden or rest her head on his chest when they hug.

I don't remember Holden's height being described but I figured him to be around 6'. Naomi is supposed to be 2 meters which is about 6'7".

EDIT: they were on Tycho, walking next to each other in the scene I'm referring to. They were not in space, in zero g or anything like that.. I wouldn't have made this post if that was the case.

Amos race/class build for BG3

This is my first post so I hope I have the flair correct. I’m also trying this on my phone at work so I apologize for the grammatical errors!

I want to create a character in Bader’s Gate 3 inspired by my personal and fan favorite Amos Burton. Obviously there is a huge difference between grounded sci fi and high fantasy so I’m interested in other peoples takes! I would also like to know your takes on the other characters!

Fairly simple rule for the sci fi/fantasy conversion is to treat the tech in the expanse as magic in BG3 and using race to represent where someone is from. For example, anyone from earth is human, Mars is are high/wood elves. Half elves could be anywhere. Drow, tieflings, and half orcs are belters since they are generally looked down upon, dismissed, or under appreciated. Anything related to the proto-molecule would be related to sorcery.

So my thoughts on Amos:
Race: human

Background: Urchin - streets smarts from rough child hood seems to be on point. I also considered Haunted One given Amo’s character arc in the show. A resist Dark Urge would be interesting but since I haven’t finished a Dark Urge run, I’m not 100% sure how applicable it would be.

Class: I struggled with this one but I’m leaning towards fighter. Amos knows his way around most if not all weapons and can navigate within a battle pretty effortlessly… a close 2nd is Barbarian. Let’s not get it twisted, Amos will fuck shit up when pushed. When his eyes get wide right before kicking ass reminds me of a clam before a storm. The storm being barbarian’s rage. I think why I’m leaning towards fighter is because even in those “rage moments” Amos is still very much in control. He’s not acting viscerally on pure emotion. Violence is a means to an end for him. He doesn’t seek it or enjoy it which I associate with rage.

Subclass: Eldritch Knight. Landed on this fairly easy. Amos is mechanic which involved dabbling in tech so makes sense to chose a subclass that dabbles in magic.

Other characters:
Holden: human paladin. Love him or hate him, when it comes to Holden’s principles, he’s an insufferable “white knight”. I also thought since sorcerers are naturally imbued with magic, it would good to multi-class with since he has a connection to the proto-molecule.

Naomi: tiefling wizard. Gotta study hard to be one of the best engineers in the system and wizards are know for studying magic.

Alex: high elf cleric. I’m not super confident on this one since I’m not sure how to incorporate a pilot into BG3. My thought was Alex provides both utility and support to the roci. He is still very patriotic to mars so that could be seen as representing his god/deity but even now, I feel like I’m reaching.

POSSIBLE SPOILER
Miller: Drow ranger in the early books and bard and/or sorcerer in the later books. Ranger for investigation. No more, no less. Without getting into too much detail, he guides and inspires and Holden albeit in vague and ambiguous ways. From a gaming-meta perspective, he would be playable character until the event, after which he would be a NPC. I included sorcerer with the thought of miller being a playable character.

I could go on but this is getting long. I know this isn’t very detailed but it was fun thought experiment when I smoked a copious amount of weed. I’m hoping this generalization leaves the door open for discussion as opposed to coming off as incomplete.

What are your thoughts? What would you change with what i have? How would you incorporate the races and classes I haven’t mentioned?

Tldr for Auberon

I finished PR and really want to get to TW, but am feeling unmotivated to plow through Auberon (all novellas i've thought moved really slowly, the only two i've liked were The Churn and Strange Dogs, but i've only read Strange Dogs and just gotten a synopsis of Churn but still really enjoyed the premise). I know Auberon focuses on Erich who moved to Auberon, but can someone share any cool details of the planet itself or anything that happens here?

New guy in the Belt

Hey, there, Expansionistas! I'm finally able to start watching the show, pilot to finale! Starting in the next couple days, but had an admittedly noob question- just how do the books compare to the show? Should I read them first, and admire what the show got right? Or will I be very much hacked at what the showrunners blew to smithereens?

No spoilers, please, just an over-arching, 'yeah, they did good,' or 'man, it was a cock up, start to finish,' or a bir of both.

I usually hate action scenes

But episode 4 is so good. I usually hate the military/violence glorifying jerkery, but for some reason I was really into the gadgets and the ships and all that. And remembering the books for all the details on the equipment and all of that, I remember getting such a cozy feel from them being so stoked suddenly getting a fully outfitted and stocked ship. The coffee!!!

I think it works very well because space is so imposing and dangerous so the vicarious feeling of being safe in a ship like that really got to me! I wanna live there. It’s like being inside under a blanket when there’s a thunderstorm outside, but times 100.

I’m wondering what makes a good action scene for me. I truly hate most action scenes where it’s just pew pew and violence and fistfights or whatever; I usually just fast forward them. But the Expanse battles I don’t skip.

I just finished Leviathan Falls and the Sins of Our Fathers. Now what?

I spent the last 4 months reading all of the Expanse novels and short stories, and it's finally over. I absolutely loved it, and I genuinely enjoyed each book better than the last. But now what do I do with my life? Does anyone have any recommendations for other books that would scratch that same itch as this series?

Edit: I’m planning on starting the Captive’s War series at some point, as well as watching the TV adaptation. But I’m looking for other recommendations as well!
