Novella question

Hey all, I just finished the series last week and the novellas this week. Now that I'm done with everything I am really curious about how others feel about the novellas and their placement in the series.

I read 1-9 back to back then read Sins of our Fathers then went back through Memory's Legion from the start.
Do you think the order in which you read them changes the overall experience? Not that any one experience is greater than the other when it comes to reading the series, but I definitely feel like reading The Churn / Vital Abyss / Strange Dogs in their publication order without knowing how the series ends would have changed how I felt about some of the following novels and the information provided in them. Does knowing about Cara / Xan change how you felt when they appeared in the final trilogy? Knowing Paulo's backstory before the final trilogy?

I'm working on a big ranking of the series (ranking all the chapters of every book, as well as POV character rankings, full book ranking, and a novella ranking) and this is a thought I keep coming back to

Is it stated whether Marco knew about the election when...?

When Marco attacked earth, was it meant to coincide with the transfer of power/election of Gao?

Or was it just a coincidence?

Thomas Jane first appears as a washed up, drunk detective taking on the case of a missing person in the show Troppo. Ring any bells?

Jane acts and produced the tv series Troppo which is half way through the second season on Amazon. I can't help but believe this initial introduction to his character is a nod to his role as detective Miller. It's a good watch, I highly recommend!

Her name is Lucky Earther.

"She is fat and lazy, and I give her whatever she wants. I was born on Ceras. This is my home. I don't hate anyone. I want air and water and freedom. A good life for my children. It's not the Inners and the Belt. It's the people who want more hate and the ones who just want to live. I'm so tired of the hate, just tired. I can't even wash my hands. There's no water. Lucky Earther."

Wow there are always scenes that get me when I rewatch and this is one of them. A perfect encapsulation of the conflict in the series as well as real life. And there is a cat!

It's also right after Clarissa tells Holden to never be mad for not killing someone. Her story is reflected in this scene and it is beautiful.

Not exactly Expanse, but Drummer is on Sweettooth (Netflix)

It was just surprising to see her and I immediately screamed Drummer when I saw her. I haven’t seen Cara Gee in many things so it was a nice treat.

Totally understand if this needs to be deleted, no worries.

Firm-to-Hard SF recommendations (books)

Presently finishing up with reading The Expanse novels to one of my gfs, which in combination with us starting to watch For All Mankind recently has gotten her hooked on firm-ish sci-fi. As a Hard-SF reader and writer myself, I'm also looking for good books for both of us, ideally leaning more to the hard SF side of things so we need reading recommendations for what we read next, with the following criteria in mind:

Ideally a level of hardness similar to or greater than the Expanse. Relatively realistic spaceflight, no (or at absolute most strictly limited) reactionless drives, either limited FTL or STL-only settings.
Good characters. Basically a must-have. They don't have to be boyscouts, and we love a good antihero, but they need to feel like real people. Queer and diverse rep definitely welcomed but not necessary.
Ideally a series or setting with multiple installments. Better yet if it's a story that's already finished.

Here's my current 'definite' reading list:

Paul McAuley's Jackaroo novels (Something Coming Through and Into Everywhere, maybe a little softer than the Expanse but has a world and characters that feel present and real to me).
Joan Vinge's Outcasts of Heaven's Belt (Ramjets technically render this story science fantasy now, but 70s and 80s ramjet books like this welcome).
My problematic fave, Larry Niven's Ringworld... probably not some of the wonkier later ones. Might skip Throne since it's mostly furry sex.
Al Reynolds Revelation Space sequence and House of Suns. Maybe Revenger, too, and the Blue Remembered Earth trilogy. My only concern is Reynolds' characters are so flat you could use them as surfboards.

Less sure about:

Paul McAuley's Quiet War books. Characters are weaker than Jackaroo but the science is harder. Book one has an entire chapter dedicated to soil science, which would put her to sleep.
Hannu Ranjeimi's Quantum Thief trilogy, which I love, but which a reread of has me convinced might suck as an audiobook.
Arkady Martine's A Memory Called Empire and A Desolation Named Peace on account of their softness. On the other hand, lesbians and palace intrigue.
Ann Leckie's Ancilliary trilogy, on account of their softness.
Maybe Corey Doctorow's Walkaway, which has so far proven the only book of his I can fully recommend.

Would love recommendations in a similar vein. Can't stress enough how much more important to me characterwork is than absolute technical accuracy.

Holden is so annoying

I'm in season 4 and I'm really loving the show but Holden is so fucking annoying I can't stand the sight of his stupid facial expressions, the way he talks down to people, his stupid decisions and his self-righteousness...Does it get better? Otherwise I think I'll have to drop the show. He's so insufferable it's ruining the show.

Are there any 3D demos or fly-throughs of locations from The Expanse?

The CGI locations in the Expanse are incredible, but sadly didn't get a lot of actual screen time. Has anyone created a demo, game or other facility that allows people to explore some of those 3D locations? It would be a shame if all the work to create those environments was lost.

What other podcasts to listen?

I’m a long time fan. Watched all episodes and read all books and have been catching up the podcast. But now I have reached the last episode so cannot binge listen Wes and Ty’s hilarious conversations while driving or exercising anymore. 😅. Are there other podcasts that expanse fans love to listen to?
I’m really a podcast newbie and wes and Ty’s podcast is literally the first podcast I have listened.

Detail I noticed regarding the Nauvoo

Been reading through the books as of late and enjoying them a lot. Ive just started Abaddon's Gate and noticed an interesting little tidbit regarding the Nauvoo.

From p.322 of Leviathan Wakes we get this description:

>On the huge screen behind the desk, the Nauvoo drifted by like the metal bones of some dead and decaying leviathan.

This stood out to me, if for no other reason, as it referred the book's title. For a while I suspected that the title of the novel referred to >!the Launching of the Nauvoo to destroy Eros (though I suspect this is actually meant to refer to the protomolecule)!<.

This comparison gets a nice little payoff in Abaddons Gate when we find out that >!the Nauvoo, now retrofitted as an OPA flagship, has been renamed 'the Behemoth'!<. I thought it was nice that this particular ship was compared to two of the primordial monsters described in the book of Job.

I wonder if the authors deliberatly erred away from 'Leviathan' (given the nautical terminology used to describe the ships in the series, it seems a more apt name for it) so as to draw the allegory in the first books title to the protomolecule over the generation ship.

As I said before, Ive not read beyond the first dozen chapters of Abaddons Gate, so I apologise if I'm missing something that gets lampshaded later on!

Season 5 Casting Easter Egg

So I just watched the first few minutes of an old TV series called White Collar (stumbled on it in a roundabout way -- don't know yet whether I'll stick with it). One of the stars is Tim DeKay.

In Season 5 of The Expanse, Tim DeKay plays Admiral Sauveterre.

In White Collar, Tim DeKay plays an FBI agent in pursuit of a criminal nicknamed "the Dutchman."

Clever, people.

Why does Marco Inaros command his crew like a civilian captain?

Inaros shares his reasoning with all his crew openly and almost runs his ship/navy like a democracy. He tolerates backtalk and the questioning of his choices far more than the disciplined Navies of Earth and Mars. Is this intentional, and if so what is the purpose?

In Persepolis Rising, when the Rocinante lands on Freehold, how many of thought: Firefly

Not just that the settlement has residents that all wear sidearms, but when Holden and Bobby return to the ship, Amos is waiting for them, holding a rifle. It reminded me of every Firefly episode when they land on some fringe planet and have to deal with aggressive yokels in a Wild West town.

The Expanse is a much more serious series, of course, but the association is a pleasurable one for me.

How about you?

Rewatching, on S3E3 and the scene with Amos saying "I didn't always work in space." had Bobbie in the back right went through emotions till laughing. When she was next shown, Bobbie said with a stifled smile "Mars will ready the white flag."

Either an accident or in the script, bravo.

Should I re-read the last 3 books?

Ok so I am obsessed with The Expanse. I read all the books 2 years ago and now I'm about to finish my 3rd rewatch of the show. I'm struggling to read anything new but I'm tempted to re-read the last 3 books to scratch that itch (and reading Strange Dogs made me want to focus on those 3 books). It's also because reading the 9 books again is quite the commitment :')
Has anyone else done this too?

Also, slightly unrelated but it's insane how much The Expanse universe lives in my head all the time, I never had this with other books before <3

What’s the #1 technology from the show you wish existed irl

I kind of want to exclude the autodoc because that would probably be most people’s answer 😂

But maybe it’s the limb regrowing gel. Elvi’s medication printer. Holden’s anti-cancer implant. Or the epstein drive. Space travel in general. Whatever gestation technology they use on Ganymede. The AI we see them use throughout the show. Or maybe it’s the protomolecule! Jk.

Honestly, if they figured out a way to gestate fetuses outside the body and it was an accessible technology—I think that would be my pick.

Let’s hear your thoughts!

Any ever done a count on how many deaths occur total? Like every single casualty during the series?

I feel like due to the scope of the series this series has one of the highest death count out of like any series ever. I mean the rock strikes. The multiple ships going Dutchman. The deaths on Medina station in abaddons gate. The entire system that gets murdered in the middle of leviathan falls. Everyone on Eros. Etc.

Finished the first book and loved it, can I start watching the show?

Hi everyone!
As the title says, I've only read the first book and was absolutely blown away, loved every page. So now I want to watch the tv show, but is it advisable? Should I finish all the other books first? Is it a season per book type of situation or how should I approach it?
Thanks in advance!

Strange Dogs is Sad

Just finished the main series and about halfway through the novellas. Does anyone else find Strange Dogs incredibly sad? The authors frame it as bring interpretable as horror or tragedy depending on which generational lens you take, which I think is fair if you consider the story was published before the final trilogy.

But now knowing what we know from the last book, I find it near impossible to see it as anything other than tragic. Especially the part where Cara brings back revived Xan and their parents freak out, I really feel for the kids. Honestly Cara makes a great point when she thinks that the adults are just stuck in their Earth ways and that to her, Laconia is the normal place and this is just the way things happen there.

Curious if anyone else agrees or if there's someone who does still see it as a horror story.
