Muskrat Question

Okay so in the final 3 books, Laconia becomes a prominent player of…everything. However, one thing that consistently eludes me logistically is Teresa Duarte’s dog, Muskrat.

How the hell is there an aged dog that seems to have been with her for YEARS on Laconia? I am charitably saying it’s a 2-3 year gap between Persepolis Rising and Tiamat’s Wrath, and I doubt Duarte told Trejo to adopt a puppy when he was done conquering Sol system (if I recall correctly, Duarte’s daughter already had Muskrat and is observed by imprisoned Holden in the epilogue of PR). So some first wave colonist would have had to have brought multiple dogs and Muskrat would be a 2nd or 3rd generation pup on Laconia.

The Martian traitors shut blockaded their ring gate after they fucked off from Mars during the Free Navy Conflict, it’s been 30 years since that ended with absolutely no contact with the outside. Teresa wasn’t even born when that happened, dogs at most live about 20 years, any food that sustains the local biologicals is deadly to the colonists, and dogs can accidentally kill themselves eating chocolate ffs.

Yeah I know, hand wavy macguffin protomolecule creating physics defying structures and such, but I can’t get past there being a dog on Laconia.

This show is what I was looking for and damn was it amazing

I was watching For All Mankind because I wanted to watch a show about space. Loved Season 1 but dropped it in Season 2 because it got too soapy. I wanted action and more space exploration since I am a geek for space.

I saw on the subreddit of For All Mankind that someone was talking about The Expanse and how it has action and best of all its set in space. I started watching it and fell in love with it. I was hooked on every episode and wanted more. I was sad about what happen to Alex since I really liked that character but unfortunately the actor was not so great. After Season 6 I wanted more because I felt it didn't answer all the questions. Like it felt it was setting up for more seasons but I guessed Amazon wanted to end it there. I am going to start reading the books to know what the true ending is but damn I really do wish they can make more episodes because I finally found a really great space action show and it did not disappoint at all.

I really enjoyed this show from start to finish. Really loved the story and the environment. Loved that each season there was always something new especially when it had a great changed in quality in Season 4. I just hope it gets picked up again and completes the story for us to all watch. I finally found a show that satisfied my itch.

Shout-out to the real MVP and my new pride!

Story: a couple of months ago u/CMDR_Elenar showed on reddit [his beautiful Donnager](https://www.reddit.com/r/TheExpanse/comments/199zr8t/my_own_mcrn_donnager/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button), made in the MCRN shipyard. To my astonishment he offered himself to make me one for free, enough said that I couldn't believe my luck.

Fast forward to today - I didn't get the promised Donnager that he showed back then. I got a bigger one! Donnie arrived today at my doorstep, it's MASSIVE 43,5cm tall! Thank you u/CMDR_Elenar!! It's amazing that it's still possible to find people who can selflessly do great things for others, I can't stress it enough how honestly grateful I am, I know you had issues with your printer and it was probably a pain in the ass to make it for me, so I appreciate it even more;)

Obviously I still need to glue it together (it's 3 BIG elements) and paint it so I will post the final shots once it's done :)

Martian interrogations

What was it that made Martian interrogations so intimidating and effective. In the show and the books everyone talks about them in kinda hushed tones, like it's one of the last situations you'd ever want to be in. All I can really see is that the martians are the only ones that use focus drugs, I don't think they ever talk about torturing anyone. In fact, the only political torture you see is earth doing gravity torture (just in the show though I think).

What is it about there process that makes it so horrible.

Hirohito's War and Expanse vibes

I'm reading the absolute thick tome called Hirohito's War. I'm actually reading the physical copy which is larger than two phone books. Kids ask yor gramps wtf a phone book is

ANYWAYS...

The Carrier Battle at Coral Sea. A tactical win for Japan but, a strategic win for the Allies erm the US.

It gave me super strong Expanse vibes

Not much more than that. Good but fucking long ass read.

The ridiculous speed of missiles in the books, and the hopelessness of point defense cannons as viable protection

I was having a discussion elsewhere about how weak missiles are in the books, and they brought up the >!Rocinante vs. Pella!< fight in Babylon's Ashes. I reread the section to brush up on it, and a few key things that Bobbie says at the very beginning of the fight struck me:

2. The Rocinante is burning at 3g directly away from the enemies in a stern chase
2. The enemies just launched torpedoes at them
1. The enemies are "millions of klicks" away from them
3. Bobbie says the torpedoes will enter PDC range in 68 minutes

So, we have a distance and the time it will take the torpedoes to cover that distance, so we can calculate the DeltaV that the torpedoes would need.

Assumptions:

1. When Bobbie says "millions of klicks (km)", I am assuming the lowest reasonable guess of 1,100,000 km (1.1 gigameters) to get the lowest possible amount of DV (DeltaV).

3. A ship burning at 3g (30m/s/s) for 68 minutes will travel about 250,000 km. So the missiles need to travel 1.35 Gm, not 1.1.

2. For this first calculation, I am also assuming that the missiles have a "boost-coast-terminal" flight path; they burn hard right after launch to get up to speed, and then coast until they get close, where they burn again for terminal maneuvers. This makes the calculations easier as we assume the missiles are traveling at a constant speed for that 68 minutes.

Results:

The missiles would require a minimum DeltaV of 330km/s 1.35Gm / 68 minutes 60 sec/min = 330km/s average speed.

The Rocinante would be traveling about 120km/s after that 68 minutes, so the missiles would have a closing velocity of 210km/s (!!!)

For reference, objects in low Earth orbit are going about 8 km/s. Some guy on StackExchange says that a Saturn 5 without payload (i.e. no Apollo) has about 18km/s of DeltaV.

And these are the lowest possible DeltaV values for the missiles to be able to cross that distance in that amount of time. If we make our assumptions slightly less charitable, the numbers go even higher.

Let's say the missiles aren't boost-coast, but instead constant acceleration (maybe they're more efficient at lower power levels?🤷). This simply doubles the required DeltaV, as the missile needs to end up going twice as fast by the end of the journey to make up for the time spent going slower at the beginning.

So now the missiles are closing in on the Rocinante going 660km/s, with a 540km/s closing speed.

...let's say by "millions", Bobbie meant 6 million kilometers.

The average speed required to cross 6 gigameters in 68 minutes is 1,470km/s

Which means that a constantly accelerating missile would need almost 3,000 km/s of DV to make that journey in that time, and it would be accelerating at 73g the entire time.

At that speed (about Mach 8500), the missile could transit the entire Solar System (the entire diameter of Neptune's orbit) in about a month.

With these possible velocities in mind, it's laughable that the primary form of missile defense is chemically-propelled ballistic cannons that (charitably) have a 3km/s muzzle velocity. What could PDC range be against a missile maneuvering at 75g, a few kilometers at most? Even assuming the slowest closing speed of 210km/s, the engagement time would be miniscule fractions of a second. And even if the PDC does somehow land rounds on the missile, the Rocinante is still going to be hit with a spray of shrapnel traveling at 210 km/s.

TLDR: These missiles are fast as fuck.

SPOILERS Season 5 Episode 10!!!

Alex was one of my favorite characters, so it came as a great shock that he dies of a stroke saving Naomi. His death was honestly devastating… but not as devastating as when I just found out why he was written off.

Overall I’ve really enjoyed this season, the return to the more grounded elements of The Expanse have been a welcome return. Naomi was a huge standout, her perseverance through nearly impossible odds was a sight to behold, and Amos’s growth as a character was awesome. All in all, looking forward to finishing off the series (as it currently stands) with season 6!

Reading & Watching The Expanse made me decide to replay the Mass Effect Trilogy

Have you ever wanted to delve into or revisit something from the same genre as whatever book or movie or show you’re going through? This was me with The Expanse & going back into the Mass Effect trilogy.

Right now I’m halfway through Babylon’s Ashes & halfway through Season 4 of the show (which covers Cibola Burn) & from the characters, the governments of the various worlds, & the worlds beyond the Ring Gates, it made me want to replay one of my favorite video game trilogies of all time.

From replaying the trilogy, I noticed it has a lot of similarities to The Expanse. For example:

- Humanity colonizing the solar system

- Humanity discovering ancient alien technology that proves they are not alone (the protomolecule & the mass effect technology)

- Humanity discovering a way to travel throughout the galaxy easily (The Ring Gates & the Mass Relays)

- An ancient alien threat that wiped out the previous alien civilization (the Ring Entities wiping out the Ring Builders & the Reapers wiping out the Protheans).

- The citizens of Earth forming a unified government (The United Nations & the Systems Alliance)

Also, funny enough, Shohreh Aghdashloo (who played Avasarala) also lent her voice to the second & third games in the series. Although, it does feel weird not hearing her swear like a sailor in the games.

Thoughts on Anderson Dawes?

Generally thinking. As a union leader, Dawe's legend wasn't half bad. But I still can't wrap my head around some of his decisions. Plus, I don't remember what happened to him after he ran off with the scientist in the books or the show.

Just finished the show

So I stared back in July off a whim
Binged 1-3
Paused in between 4
And binged 5-6
And finished it 2 days ago and I can’t stop thinking about it and how unknown it feels
I’m recommending it to anyone I meet I’ve gotten my mom in I’m hoping to start watching with my brother
I’ve bought the first book as a audio so I can listen while I work (I do plan on buying physical books)

I’m dying to find out what happens but I want to ease myself into the books so it flows better instead of jumping into the finale 3 books when I know there’s some differences especially concerning characters like Alex and Drummer

Also seriously considering buying the Rocinante Model eventually so does anyone have any experience with it or similar Models as I’m more of a LEGO Guy so I don’t have any experience with pre built models

Anyways this show has nearly single-handedly changed how I view Science Fiction in all the best ways and I can’t wait to find out how it ends

Do we think at any point during the series there was an interplanetary Olympics? What new events might have been added? Summer, Winter, and Space Games?

It would seem unlikely to me that there would’ve been games between earth and mars during their Cold War but it seems like during the time gap between books 6 and 7 there certainly could’ve been games. What do y’all think?

About the future of the future spacefaring logo of the real United Nations

"The Expanse" has a pretty interesting logo for a future United Nations which represents the spacefaring age, a slight modification of the current UN logo

And I was thinking about some possibilities for the real world and the real future.

Do you think that the "The Expanse" UN logo will become a self-fulfilling prediction, as the real UN will someday adopt the "The Expanse" logo for real as a nod to The Expanse's cultural and historical significance.

As, when the actual spacefaring age comes along, "The Expanse" will probably have become a classic in the world of fiction, much like "Dune" and "Foundation". Or another similar example, we're already recognizing the relevance of past works like "Neuromancer" or "Blade Runner" to our current times, kinda like how the people of the future spacefaring age will probably recognize the relevance of "The Expanse" to their current times.

Or do you think that the UN will deliberately avoid the logo, because they think that its a jinx, as the story is about conflict between the Earth and Mars and also the Belt, and as the UN of "The Expanse" is kinda mean lol

But also, Earth is unlikely to actually become unified as one country, and the same would probably hold for Mars, no UN of a Planet Earth super-state and no MCR. And the lack of Earthly unification also means that the future UN would function much like the current UN, and not like an actual state, meaning that no space colony would feel the need to break away from the UN.

And with all these political factors as such, the jinx wouldn't really matter.

this scene from the show lives rent free in my head and i think its silly.

I honestly think about this scene once or twice a week:

https://youtu.be/XuqEX1PnG9I?si=CgmmK5vU07IKK27\_&t=44
During the Smeya encounter, Bull begins evasive maneuvers by putting the Roci “into a spin.”
I cannot stop thinking about what tactical advantage they gain by that maneuver.
I mean, at best they would add error to their PDC tracking right?
what do they gain from that, if anything? Am I missing something, or is this just a “looks cool” moment?

SPOILER Possible new reference of The Expanse in another big movie

Before you read, there might be spoilers to BOTH The Expanse AND >!Deadpool & Wolverine!<. Also before we get too excited, I have no way of knowing for certain as it's only one scene and I have no way of re-watching the movie any time soon.

That being said. In the movie >!Deadpool and Wolverine!< >!escape from Cassandra Nova and Alioth using a leg with rocket booster. Next scene they land on cliff and there is a crashed space ship underneath that cliff which can be visible for several seconds.!< >!I believe this ship is the Behemoth! The shape and hull was similar, engines in the right place. And I can't think of another drum shaped ship from other franchise that would fit the describtion better.!<

I admit that I could have missed this news elsewhere and now I am a fool for posting something obvious. Also I still could be wrong as I explained above. But if I am not, it was worth sharing, especially if you haven't yet seen the movie but plan on going. I intentionally tried keeping the name of the movie hidden, so I don't ruin fun for others.

e: Sorry for putting the spoiler into several parts, reddit just doesn't seem to want to make it one big block.
