Wendell Short Story

The Pinkwater gang that helped Holden’s crew in the assault on Stricklands Ganymede Science Outpost was lead by Wendell. He was a Martian.

I think a short story on him in the veins of the rest from memory’s legion would be a good fit.

Is the book purposefully hard to understand? I feel like I understand some of it and not at the same time. I tried looking up chapter summary’s but couldn’t find any good sites for it

Persepolis Rising part that confused me SPOILERS

I recently finished the chapter in Persepolis Rising where the Roci crew and the belter insurgents execute their plan to copy the decryption key for The Gathering Storm's communications (around chapter 30-34). They take great caution in making sure the Laconians don't understand that they've stolen the encryption key so they won't just change it up later. I don't see how this should be working at all.

One thing I didn't understand (or maybe I missed) is where this air gap security server room is located.
I assumed it's located ON Medina, because how would they gain access to the recycling systems and vents on the Storm, which has all this weird protomolecule coating? If I assume that to be the place, then am I right in that they meant to 1. take out the guards (before they knew of the deadman switch), 2. copy the key, 3. escape and blow the docks so that Laconia will never know a key was stolen? In essence, double-tap those poor guards :')

Then after they found out about the dead man's switch, Holden decided to drown out the inevitable alarm with other alarms. Smart improvisation, but none of these scenarios seem very viable long-term at all.

If there hadn't been a dead man's switch, then it seems plausible that they could've avoided detection of their key theft. But keeping coms secret and secure seems to me like it should be a major priority for the Laconians, so after having the server room blown to smithereens, that itself should trigger a key update, rendering the heist worthless. Just as a precaution.

Now with the dead man's switch discovery, an alarm will surely go off when killing the guards. Holden's distraction effort should likely work for a while, but an alarm as important as the one from the dead man's switch would likely be logged, and there would likely be some Laconian officer responsible for the guarding of that room. That officer would most likely be alerted that the room has been compromised, and would report that immediately, triggering a key update.

I may absolutely have missed some vital detail about this, but as I'm reading and remembering it, I don't see any scenario where Laconia don't just change the key on a mere suspicion of it being compromised, because why wouldn't they, it should be trivial enough right in contrast to the damage should it be leaked? Killing the guards guarding the encryption key of their entire communication stream doesn't seem very stealthy.

Further exploring this; even if the resistance managed to steal the key without murdering or alerting anyone (if the guards weren't there), what's to say the Laconians don't just update the key on routine every month? Every week? Every day?

Would love to hear your thoughts on this!

TL DR:
How did the resistance think they'd get away with the encryption key at all, especially after murdering the people guarding it?

Directionality of SPOILERS

Unspoilered Title: Directionality of Ring Gates.

I don't remember this being clearly answered anywhere in the books or in the show.

You can go through an empty ring two ways. Let's call them outward (flying away from the sun) and sunward (towards the sun).

Inside ring space, you can only go through one side of the ring, because to get to the other side you'd have to cross the boundary and get deleted. I always pictured ships exiting the slow zone coming out Sunward, and I'm pretty sure that's correct. In the show, we always see ships entering the slowzone outward, and I'm not sure we even ever get to see the "back" of the ring.

What happens if you try to transit a ring sunward? Do you pass through with no effect, as though the ring was inactive? Do you come out normally in the slow zone as though you'd transited outward? Do you get eaten by inter-dimensional space snakes? Do you transit normally but come out the wrong side of the slow zone ring and get deleted?

Storm Sparrowhawk and Durecho

I love the writing style of "James S.A. Corey". Just like they did in the show the books almost never have anything there just because there's always a reason and a purpose in a story driven from some information you're given. However, I feel it was a bit of a missed opportunity that we got to appreciate the ship and crew of The Gathering storm, yet and it's final hours it's destruction is described in a sentence.

This will be the fourth time maybe having read Leviathan Falls and whenever I get to this point I feel like it would have been extremely heart-wrenching to witness the final battle like watching the final few scenes in the Alamo. They try and they try to get away and to knock down all the missiles and get solid hits on the sparrowhawk or the direcho, but every bit of damage adds up to eventually they go out in a glorious ball of Fire. Almost like witnessing the Pegasus final moments in Battlestar Galactica. It's not often that others can get you to care about a secondary crew, but they did it. I feel like I would have been on the edge of my seat hoping they could make it right till the end.

I don't know. Those are my thoughts.

Season 6 on Prime, should I continue?

For context, I’ve been reading the series for the first time and started watching the show after I finished the first book. Since then I have been essentially one season behind the book I’ve been reading, until now.

I’m now about 1/3 of the way through Book 6 and I’ve just finished season 5 of the show.

Should I wait until I finish the entire book series to watch season 6? I’m afraid there will be spoilers for the end of the series.

LF before and after having kids

I might be overusing the hidden text feature, but the is does involve heavy spoilers.

Anyone else have Kit’s chapters hit way harder after they had kids? When I read it the first time, they were heartbreaking for sure, but after I had a baby myself, oh my god.

I listened to the audiobook with my husband and when >!they first talk about “we’re not perfect, but Bakari is,”!< we both cried. Then later when >!Duarte starts his hive mind memories nonsense, the idea of just forgetting to care about your baby killed me.!<

It also made me think so much deeper into the implications of this. Beyond the fact that >!poor baby Bakari is getting all sorts of other people’s minds invading his own, if his parents forget about him, who feeds him? Who changes his diaper? Who cares about his basic needs, much less who plays with him and makes him feel loved?!<

>!Babies just die if no one thinks to take care of them. Does the hive mind just not need humans to reproduce anymore?!<

The point of Kit’s chapters are to show the deep humanness that is lost with >!the hive mind!<. Each of us needed someone to care specifically and deeply about us as an individual in order to survive childhood. Without care for the individual, the human race can’t survive >!as a hive mind, even if it beats the ring entities.!<

A Major Inconsistency?

The Expanse is my favorite science fiction series, both, in print and film. Period. Hands down. Full stop.

The thing I love about the Expanse is Daniel and Ty are so consistent with themes, with treatments, and in their universe building.

However, the major inconsistency in the Expanse is the UN, from my perspective. Or rather the UN becoming the one world government. A major theme with the Expanse is tribalism and overcoming tribalism for the benefit and/or survival of the species. Earth/Mars, Inners/Outers, etc. At solar system level it it took a Eros turning into missile, the Earth/Mars war over the protomolecule, the hybrid missile attack on Mars, the formation of the ring gate, extrasolar system colonization, apocalyptic attacks on Earth, and a second solar system wide war to unite the major factions.

But the Earth goes from 193 fractious nation states to one world government without any indication of a global war or calamity to spur this unification? Unrest in Afghanistan is mentioned, but Afghanistan seems to be mentioned as a region not as a country. But there are no mentions of previous wars or calamities outside of the real historical references we all know.

Maybe, I am putting too much thought in it. But that is one of the reasons I like this novel series so much -it is thought provoking. Because it is so well written. And I absolutely hand wave this inconsistency because I love the series. I just posted to spur discussion.

What if Holden said no?

Hey all, I'm currently on a second pass through the series and just finished Leviathan Wakes. It got me thinking, what if Holden said no when Miller asked him to stall the missiles? No crash on Venus, no gate. No gate, no Ilus or any reason for the later books to happen. No deal with Fred, no safe, no Laconia (at least in the way we would've seen)

Assuming the nukes did hit Eros, what would've happened? I would assume the hybrids would've still happened, resulting in a lot of Caliban's War plot being similar, but what about after?

Pure bliss...

I recently finished "Howling dark" by Christopher Roucchio, and didn't enjoy it at all. I've previously had started a "re-read" of the expanse series on audible, but decided to space them out and savour it, because I loved it on my first read through, and when I started the re-read I was going through the books fast. So I decided to use them as a pallet cleanser. So as I was saying I didn't enjoy Howling dark at all, it was a slog, so I needed to restore my faith in humanity again. I downloaded the "Persepolis Rising" which is the book I was at on my re read, and it was pure bliss, it was like coming home, it washed away the Foul taste in my mouth from Howling dark almost immediately. The only problem is I "ate it in few days, where's the Howling dar took me two or more weeks (it almost twice the size of "Persepolis Rising " as well).

But yeah, just wanted to share the above with you guys. See if anyone else had had a similar experience, and if anyone else has read the "Empire of silence " series, and what did you think about it?

The technology that made James f*cking Holden is 5-10 years away

I always thought Holden's backstory was an interesting idea but I had no idea the technology was this close:

The World Isn’t Ready for What Comes After I.V.F. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/09/09/opinion/ivf-debate.html?unlocked_article_code=1.Jk4.Ge47.LhPDjQn_Nf0W

Finished Persepolis and I kind of like the Laconians?

Hey everyone,

I just wrapped up Persepolis Rising, and honestly I kind of like the Laconians?

I get it—they’re set up as a major threat with their advanced tech, ruthless leadership, and huge military. But they're not coming in with ethnic cleansing, harsh lockdowns etc. >!The climax of the literal book was when the empire held the governor responsible for his harsh treatment of their citizens.!< I'm reading this and I'm like "dude, why is everyone freaking out about this?".

At no time were any of their policies even stated to the public. Everyone just sort of freaked out and knee-jerked into fighting them. >!Meanwhile, the Laconians took every opportunity to peacefully resolve each situation they encountered. They literally had the rules of engagement to fire when fired upon. !<

What do you all think? Am I missing something, or does anyone else see the Laconian Empire’s portrayal as having more depth than just being the antagonist?

Tiamat's Wrath audiobook weirdness (mild spoilers)

I just started the Tiamat's Wrath audiobook, and there are at least two weird things about it: first, the sound quality is WAY down. It's the same guy, but it sounds kind of tinny and echoey. Did he record this in his house during COVID or something?

Also, he pronounces Cortazar's name differently suddenly. (Unless I'm missing that he's talking about a different person, but I doubt it)

Has there been any explanation given for this?

(Please don't spoil any Tiamat's Wrath with replies; I'm only about 30 minutes in)

Two Places At Once

So... I've not seen this raised before and it suddenly just occurred to me, so apologies if this seems super obvious but...

Where do the ring gates in the ring space come from?

I can't remember how it's described in the books but in the show, when the ring network is activated post-shutdown of everyone's fusion drives, the other gates just appear one by one as each gate reactivates.

Now if the gates were just off, like the sol gate was before the Y Que and Maneo activated it and the slow zone, you would see them. Instead they just appear.

All this time I feel like I assumed there were a pair of gates for each system. One in the system and one in the ring space. But that's not what we see. Instead we see the gates in the ring space just appear. Not just the event horizon, but the gate itself.

This leads me to conclude that the back half of the gates are in two places at once. Because on the system side you can still go around the gate. Nothing even happens if you go through it from the back (as I recall) yet the gate still appears in ring space.

Are the books better than the show?

I watched a season and a half of the show and wasn't a huge fan outside of Thomas Jane, when he wasn't a series regular I dipped.

What are some changes from the books to the show that you liked?

So I've watched the show twice already and finally decided to read the books. I'm about half way done leviathan wakes and the differences is like night day. Like the show stays faithful to most of the story thread of the book. Heck the introduction of the Canterbury in the show is nearly identical to the Canterbury intro in the book. Down to the dialogue.

Now after that, show deviates from the book that irked me like how Holden wasn't the XO in the show or that the decision to check on the scopuli was done only because Holden logged the distress call in secret as oppose in the open but there are several changes that I really loved.

I loved the greater emphasis that earth and the politics has in the show. I was shocked to find out that Avasarala wasn't a main character in the books or the fact that there is basically no cold war between earth and Mars. I preferred it when Avasarala was talking about how Earth was worried about Mars taking over Ceres station then the books depiction which depicted the inners being in an alliance and Earth abandoning Ceres station because Mars asked them too.

Are there any changes to the show that you liked? Disliked?
