Does any other show/story compare to the Expanse in how compelling each faction is?
I mean fucks sake, I’m sitting here muttering to myself “bel ta lo dah”. I loved Mars, their patriotism—what the planet and their future meant to them exemplified best in Alex & Bobby.
Earth - Chrisjen, the diabolical, suave Errinwright. Amos’ backstory. James’ backstory. The pinnacle of population density, the birthplace of humanity, the only place where human bones and physiology can grow to its fullest physical potential as it relates to living with gravity and its effects.
The Belt - The OPA. Fred Johnson’s new home. Anderson Dawes. Miller. Clays Ashford. Naomi Nagata. Camina Drummer. Factions within factions. Culture. Struggle. Togetherness. Innovation. An earned and healthy distrust of inners. Pirates. Potential.
Game of Thrones had some cool factions. But at least for me it was never an “oh shit, who do I want to win here” on anything larger than a 1v1 scale. (Game of Thrones spoilers: the closest would’ve been the Starks vs The Mother of Dragons and that never happened).
I miss the living fuck out of that show already and I finished it two days ago. Does any other show do as fine a job in depicting, differentiating and making each of its factions so damn like/respectable?

Just finished the show. Questions about books.
I just finished the show. I did not expect it to pull me in this much. Now i know that the show covers the story about to book 6. I'm craving more and i want to finish that story.
For those that read the books and watched the show:
Can i pick up the series from book 7 and not get confused(at least not too much)? Are there major differences in story and characters?
Does the plotline of the protomolecule and entities in the gates get a satisfying resolution? Does it get explained, or does it remain more as a plot device like in the show?

Expanse Tabletop RPG Crowdfunder Ends Tonight
Hey, there's a crowdfunder running for a new edition of The Expanse tabletop RPG (based off the books) from Green Ronin Publishing. The new edition pushes into the Transport Union era, expanding from the time period of the first books. Aside from the RPG itself, they have dice, miniatures, and some other cool accessories. It end tonight at 6:00 PST. Thought it might be of interest to the folks in here, since I saw someone discussed the original game a while back.

What do you think Fred was up to in Season 4?
Fred only gets a short scene in S4, essentially a cameo. But it's intriguing! He shows up in a militaristic looking costume (notably not the actual OPA uniform though!) with his hair grown out a lot more than we typically see on him. On either side of this appearance, in S3 and S5, he's an administrator on Tycho, he's not one to go out on the field and point a gun at someone.
Was he out pirate hunting like Ashford? Why was he personally out there himself?

Dawes’ Books Fate Opinions
So in the show and books I always enjoyed Anderson Dawes’ character (Jared Harris crushed it on screen). So he was killed off screen because they couldn’t book Harris in season 6, which was unfortunate, but understandable. However, he does have a fairly important role to play in Babylon’s Ashes on page. I wondered everyone’s opinion on his fate.
He threw in with Marco and thought he could mitigate Marco’s lack of foresight and be the power behind the figurehead, then realized he drastically miscalculated and underestimated his pettiness when he disciplined Filip for shooting a cop on Ceres.
While he tried to bull rush the planning meeting Holden held in place of the dead Fred Johnson on Tycho (and got kicked out), he made one last play to help by being a perfect chameleon to every Inaros defector/person on the fence to support Holden’s plan in what was my favorite chapter of the book.
In the aftermath of the Free Navy Conflict, Michio Pa (who was initially a Marco lieutenant during the bombardment) is voted first President of the Transport Union. Nico Sanjrani, who was also a lieutenant and defected after Marco’s actions cast aside the viable plan for self sustainability, is in the administration and years later became Transport Union President themself. Anderson Dawes…goes to jail for having also thrown in with Marco during the bombardment.
I can certainly see that being the case as in Earth’s mind, somebody had to pay and he was essentially governor of Ceres when this went down, but I’m curious if you all think he got what he deserved?

After the books end...my take on one of the worlds and the role of the dogs.

Since rules are still kept so strict and any new settlements must have prior approval, many young adults are becoming desperate in finding new ways to create their own society. A group of extreme young people who call themselves The Doria (since Dorians were the people who settled what became Sparta) make a pact. They leave and go to the pool together where they commit mass suicide so that the Dogs can resurrect them. Now they are able to leave and create a new community far away without need for Laconian resources or approval. !<
>!While the Dorians have been keeping to themselves for years, rumors still spread throughout Laconia. Rumors begin since some of the humans see an occasional Dorian in the woods, usually keeping a discreet eye out to protect the Dogs. Rumors grow of another life beyond the forest where there are no pens, no curfews, where people are truly free. Occasionally, people start to run off into the woods to join. Some of them are found by the Dogs, some are not. Some are caught by the government and since everyone already believes they ran off, they’re tested on with the PM in the new discreet pens.!<

So maybe the Laconians end up splitting into two camps. Those who want to create an integrated society where the Dorians have their own roles in society and those who want an exclusively human city. The Dorians who agree to integration will have to change their views that humans are inherently a scourge on the planet and instead work together to guide them to a path in which they live in harmony with their surrounding ecosystem. The Dorians who don’t agree would splinter off into an even more remote area to create their own isolated community. A treaty is made between the all-human Laconia City (Lacopolis?) and the newly-integrated Doria. Aspects of the treaty include: the Dogs are not to be harmed, no one will be intentionally brought back unless they expressly wished for such before passing, no one under the age of 16 may be brought back, the bodies of violent criminals will be burned so they cannot be brought back, and access to certain Gatebuilder tech will be shared (like some sort of super efficient material transport system between parts of the planet and/or between Laconia and another planet in the system), the sacred Pool of Restoration will be protected by Doria but access is permitted to agreed-upon representatives of Lacopolis so they can repair their tools.!<

Just finished Cibola Burn for the first time recently
This is probably not an uncommon feeling, but that last interlude with Protomiller fucked me up. Absolutely beautiful, it had me crying after reading it. I can’t think of a more perfect send off to Miller and the dead of Eros. It is quite possibly my favorite chapter out of the series so far. I’m excited to get to book 5 and see Clarissa again, but I’ll miss my favorite Belter detective

Hello, oh man... The Expanse
I recently returned to Reddit and have found that the toxic levels are significantly lower then I remember it being so Ive stuck around.
Listen, I've read every single The Expanse book and now watched the entire series on amazon at least 7 times. This is the best series and books I have seen since Harry Potter and GoT. this is the best sci-fi series since Star Wars (and I watched the first one in 77 when I was 4 years old including 30 years of worship until modern times), I recently read their new book "The Mercy of the Gods" and feel mixed about it. I hope it is just a setup book for the series.
This series bucks the trend of trash that includes modern Star Trek and Star Wars by offering an amazing set of built in diversity that just works, built into the story and not shoved down out throats like we need to be taught a lesson. It really is the Game of Thrones of the solar system (I like it better and have read the GoT books). This series is the LoTR of space and I hope it just builds and builds over time and is seen as such.
Rant over... I guess Ty lives in my neck of the woods now, I would sell my SOUL for a signature of something.
Im actually disappointed that there isn't that much collector merch that I can peacock in my dedicated theater space.

Alternative torpedoes?
\[Disclaimer: I'm making my way through the book "Leviathan Wakes", but my knowledge of the universe of The Expanse is mostly based on the TV series. I also apologize if this is an unwanted or inappropriate post.\]
I've been rewatching the series, and just watched s6e3, "Force Projection", in which >!the Rocinante fires a torpedo and Holden disarms the warhead before impact, so that the torpedo lodges itself into the ship but does not explode.!< That got me thinking about alternatives to "impact and explode" torpedoes.
One possibility might be a torp with an EMP warhead instead of a nuke. A hit would disable a ship for a short time, instead of killing it. (I know taking out their drive cone can accomplish a similar feat for a longer period, but that's a much trickier shot, IMO.)
Another---I see this in tactical space-combat board games, and elsewhere---would be a homing torpedo. Torps already have fairly sophisticated guidance systems, and we know you can park one and keep it idle for quite a while. Equip a torp with an IFF (Identify Friend or Foe) system, hide a few in an asteroid cluster, and have them wait until they detect a signal from a passing ship. They'd probably have to do a brief interrogation to determine whether the ship is hostile, but once they do, the warhead arms, the drive comes on, and it makes a beeline for the unlucky ship. (More like an active, mobile mine than a hoping torpedo, really, I guess.)
The series doesn't have anything like that, to my recollection. Do the books have any comparable weapons systems?

"Can I have all your stuff?"
There are a few running phrases throughout the series that I love, like "Doors and Corners" obviously, but my favorite is all the different ways they manage to phrase the sentiment "Can I have all your stuff?"
My partner and I have said "doors and corners" to each other about a thousand things, from literally stubbing a toe on a corner, to getting blindsided by something in life because we weren't paying attention.

Donnager Torpedo Size and Tube Layout
Does anyone have an understanding of how this is laid out and what torpedoes this thing fires? The wiki says 6 forward tubes and the model confirms that.

Though it launched a lot more than that in a spread at the stealth ships and they certainly weren't the same size as the tubes. For scale here is a Donnager next to my WIP Heavy Frigate model in Blender.

The frigate is 66m long and those torpedo tubes are massive. My Morrigan class can almost fit in one of those tubes.

Does anyone know what it was firing in season 1 or how these launchers are laid out? Is it more than 1 tube inside larger tubes? Those torpedoes it launched at the stealth ships looked about the same size as the Roci's torpedoes.

Question about season 3 events

Why did Miller...
... reappear to Holden after he injects himself in LF?
IIRC, the protomolecule "manifests" Miller to Holden through the node on the Roci, to use him as a tool to find out what had happened to the builders.
So, why did Miller reappear? It doesn't serve any purpose at that point for the protomolecule, does he?
What am I missing?
