Two things about TW

I'm listening to TW and breathed out a huge sigh of relief when Teresa was going to visit her friend Timothy. Amos has been left out for too long for my tolerance. Phew.

Second... why did he change the pronunciation of Cortizar? It was jarring at first and still makes me twitch. Is there a canon reason that they haven't gotten to yet? Did Mays just decide to fuck with me?

Looking for a 3d realistic solar system program

While watching I got very interested in the exact details of our solar system. How the the expanse realistically implements the scale of make-up of our solar system is so immersive.

I've been looking for a program or site which realistically portrays a 3d model to play around with while I listen to the audio books. So far i've tried solar system scope and a few others but they are a bit to basic for me.

Does anyone have a good recommendation I want all the minor moons and dwarf planets to be there with extensive information about them. Bonus points if it lets me calculate flight times and transmissions delays between different points

Triple Point vs Caliban's War

So I finished Caliban's War. I posted recently some half-through impressions. I will try not to extend myself on a general review. Love Avasarala and Bobbie, they make it a better book than Leviathan Wakes. It's better paced, despite Prax. Even though he is no POV, I think Amos is the star of this book, among the Roci's crew.

Some plot polints are too similar to book #1: protomolecule infects a planet/station, chaos ensues, heroes fix it. It's different, I can't really say it is repetitive, but it felt a little bit so sometimes.

What I really wanted to discuss is how good was Triple Point episode and how disappointing is the book in comparison. I know that had I read the books first, I wouldn't think like this. That sequence of episodes was my favorite of all the series, starting with Avasarala kidnapping and ending with the coup at the Agatha ship. The tension there was high voltage, even though we barely knew those soldiers, it was amazing.

Avasarala and Bobbie's book escape was satisfying enough, though it lacked Cotyar (he's more prominent in the show). I know we don't have POV inside Agatha, it's a shame. I probably had too high expectations about this plot. I know the books have several less important POVs so I expected one of them to guide us through this sequence during Mars vs Earth skirmishes, which I expected it would happen on book #3! I mean... what was season 2 about then? So, the conflict resolution fell flat.

It was really cool having all main characters on the same place sharing some scenes: Alex Naomi Holden Amos Bobbie Avasarala (plus Prax). I'd say only Drummer is missing from main characters. Question, please someone answer without spoilers, just yes or no: will we ever have as many main characters at the same spot in any later book?

Thanks!

P.S. I was not sure which flair was best. I've read only up to Caliban's War but watched all seasons.

Question about where the Unknown Aggressors come from

As far as I'm aware this isn't directly addressed in the books themselves, but do we know specifically how old the Unknown Aggressors/Goths' universe is? We know that it's an older universe, but I don't think we ever learn anything more specific. In, Abaddon's Gate (I think), the cosmic background radiation is measured to be older than the Big Bang, but we never learn how much older it is; is this something addressed elsewhere by the authors? It's interesting to me because this could easily point toward the Goths themselves being trillions of years old. If our entire universe's history is a blip from their perspective, it could explain why the Goths are so consistent in targeting ring travel (until Duarte fucks up lol)

Marco Inaros - delusional terrorist and wannabe emperor

Inaros had lost the moment he had been given any amount of meaningful power.

He constantly suffers from an inferiority complex that tortures him, no matter what he does nothing will ever be enough, he then proceeds to hoard power for most of his life, by piracy, by political blackmail and in the end by pure sheer military force.

He is a man that came from nothing and ended up with the most power that anybody had ever possed in history (till duarte at the very least), he is a nobody who loves the idea of blowing shit up, he blows up the covilian ship using Naomi code, he blows up Mars stealth coating factory and in the end as his magnum opum he blows up the Earth.

And from this moment on his fate was already written, he had forced the entire inner solar system to unify in a common front against his " free navy", a navy he had very few ways of resupplying and rearming and that was now forced in the light.

Inaros had survived because he had been able to slip under EMC radars as a relatively minor threat, now finally no longer forced to act in the shadows his insanity is evident to everybody, hell even is inner council believes him batshit insane.

He spends all is life trying to be seen under the false guise of fighting for the belt when he only cares for himself, he sends valuable ships after his white whale, he refuses to even listen to his advisors, despite branding himself as a hero of the people he gives a frozen shit about them, hell he sees them as pretty much pawns for his grand game and despite seeing himself as a Washington, a Malcolm X, a Napoleon even but in the end the split second all the power is placed on him he proves to be just another wannabe Alexander, with is army of half lies and his pire of mirrors that simply shatters the moment something goes wrong.

Ultimately he is just another Hitler, he promised the Belt a great future and a prosperous empire while well aware that he was leading them towards inevitable death and probably had it not been for the cooler heads Earth would've probably launched it's entire arsenal at the belt in a textbook example of MAD.

I wrote this because I have seen many people treat him like he was indeed a monster but he was a natural reaction to the wrongdoings of the inners, and while to a certain degree that stands true he was in no way a reflection of that feeling but actually a fantastic psychopath that managed to turn the rage boiling in the belt as a catalyst for his plans.

Ultimately he was wrong on the whole line, after all Fred OPA had already begun the process of building a centralised belter nation and the inners had long since stopped interfering with the belt, his actions could've easily ended with another crackdown on the belt or worse total annihilation.

Overall that just my idea and I would be delighted to hear any other opinion, thank you for reading

The Donnager

I’m rereading the series and have been pondering what exactly happened on the Donnager. I’m primarily drawing from the books, but am more than happy to include TV series inputs as we. Eager to hear everyone’s thoughts.

Numerous times throughout the series, we see the extraordinary combat effectiveness of Martians in their power armor. Even “unarmed” personnel in the suits can almost neutralize a significant threat.

That being said, how exactly did the stealth ships and their boarding parties defeat the MCRN Donnager? Is it feasible that a ship like that wouldn’t have even a small contingent of Marines with power armor on board? I’m willing to buy that the stealth ships could get in close, but a successful boarding action on a flagship like the Donnie seems extremely unlikely.

It just seems to happen extremely quickly and I’m not too clear on what happened. Does anyone else feel this way?

Why Use People?

It seems like the series has made it abundantly clear that The Protomolecule works on all biological matter, so why are organizations like Protogen and later Laconia using people? I find it extremely hard to believe a corporation powerful enough to organize the murder and subsequent monitoring of an entire asteroid city couldn’t instead source a similar amount of biological matter, whether it’s plants, mushrooms, animals, dead people, or some combination. And then we get to Laconia. They seem to just be doing it because it’s a scary death and they’re evil and I guess it’s harder to rationalize something that’s purpose is to be inherently evil

Ashford is a much better character in the series than the books so far.

I'm about a third of the way through book six and a few episodes into season 4. I've had a few gripes about some different characters in the series vs their depiction in the books. But so far Ashford is a breath of fresh air. In the books, I read him as an idiot psychopath, but in the series he's a complicated character who's made mistakes while attempting to do what he believed was the right thing to do and then making amends for those mistakes. He also seems light-years more competent. Looking forward to his development in the rest of the series. Little drunk. Sorry for any grammatical errors.

since before humanity had been

There's this thing the authors do when they want to emphasize how primal some bodily function is, how ancient the PM builders are, or something similar that makes me gleeful:

\- He picked the former, snuggling himself down into the gel the way animals in their nests had been doing since before humanity had been more than an upstart hamster trying to avoid the dinosaurs. (Nemesis Games)

\- Everything they were trying to interact with here had been waiting since before humanity had been a kinky idea that two amoebas came up with. (Tiamat's Wrath)

\- ... were already godlike back when humanity's ancestors thought photosynthesis and the flagellum were cutting edge. (Leviathan wakes)

\- ... since before humanity had been a bunch of enterprising prokaryotes kicking about the idea of organelles. (Okay, that's mine)

The deadpan delivery of Jefferson Mays just makes these all the more delightful.

How do breaking G burns work with ship gravity

Let’s just keep it with the designs of the Roci. Acceleration gravity and the design of the ship make sense to me. But deceleration seems you would have to walk around in an upside down ship? Am I missing something from the show or physics?

Edit: I believe I understand acceleration gravity. I am more curious of the effect of the braking burn on the forces on the crew. Wouldn’t that gravity push you towards the nose of the ship?

Edit 2: people have explained it clearly enough for me to visualize the g forces after the flip. I was at first thinking about it wrong after the flip and the forces of gravity.

If someone burned at 1G for a year, they'd reach about 75% the speed of light.

And if they keep at it for one more year, they reach around 94% the speed of light.

I wish the show explored this more—people attempting near-relativistic travel and actually experiencing time dilation. With how powerful the Epstein Drive is, it's within the realm of what's possible in the universe they built.

Even something like the Nauvoo reaching another star doesn't seem unrealistic once you look at the physics.

A detail I noticed about life expectancy

I was watching the show again for the millionth time when I noticed a nice small detail in S01E04 CQB.

https://preview.redd.it/freb0rdhlwaf1.jpg?width=1603&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7618519f1877d18f5d9de1c2dc159732268bbdb8

During the battle, Lopez talks to Holden in a condescending tone about how Earthers are destroying their planet and he mentions "My great uncle used to miss Earth terribly". It made my wonder how he spoke to his uncle, and how he remembered it at all? Then I remembered the scene which happens just a couple of minutes ago.

https://preview.redd.it/d6w2fh7ilwaf1.png?width=1603&format=png&auto=webp&s=f34003b78230b2297513bd955d64b58b3d2072ab

When Miller goes to the morgue to do an autopsy on a dead dude, the coroner comes in and starts a little small talk with Miller. He says something along the lines of "do you know what the average life expectancy is on Earth? 128 years, better on Mars...".

Obviously, medical tech will be much better in the future but its pretty cool that they include such details which might not be apparent on the first go but every time I re-watch this show I discover another new hidden little detail. This is probably the second one I found just in S1.

How do you picture people walking in low g?

Just started reading the books after having watched the show a few years back. Loving it, but one thing I'm struggling to imagine is what a low gravity gait would look like. Does everyone on Ceres just hop around like the Apollo astronauts on the Moon? How do I not make it look so goofy in my head? Maybe Belter proportions pull it off more elegantly.

Curious what you guys picture

(First time reading) Thoughts about what Duarte did to SPOILER taimats wrath Chapter 43

So I just got to the part on taimats wrath where Duarte killed cortazar and wow I did not expect that to happen and in the way it did. What the fuck is going on with Duarte. From what it looks like it was mainly just to try to protect teresa as she told him about cortazar but yeah I didn’t expect him to go out like that.

but yeah so far I have been enjoying taimats wrath and the previous books and I can’t wait to read more
