comparatively and honestly got me going a bit even though I didn’t think they were being aggressive, just overly friendly.
After I went inside all 3 of them spend 30 mins at my back door looking at me and my cat inside the house, and watched me do chores. Eventually I found one attempting the lever door handle on the back French door (which I will now have to keep permanently locked).
I live in WA state and we have neither type of rabies that raccoons can carry, and have an extremely low rate of infectious encounters with raccoons. I appear to be the only person these little guys trust as they are very cautious of my gf (unless I’m with her) and will still run if a neighbor comes out in their yard so they don’t seem too dependent or friendly with people in general just yet.
I really like these little guys and would like to allow further cautious contact if they want it, but am curious what the downsides are? I don’t want to make them dependent or think that all people are friends, and so far that doesn’t seem to be the case. What are the downsides of building this relationship? Are those hiss sounds they make when getting close aggressive even though they have never attacked or stood ground with me? I’m aware that they are wild animals and don’t want to misinterpret an act of aggression on their end foolishly.
Thank for any reply’s and sorry for the long winded story.

DRUNK RACCOON 🦝 The masked burglar broke into the closed Virginia liquor store early on Saturday and hit the bottom shelf, where the scotch and whisky were stored. The bandit was something of a nocturnal menace: bottles were smashed, a ceiling tile collapsed and alcohol pooled on the floor. fox13.t

Befriending questions
Alright…..
So for the last several years, I have been having on and off contact with (what I assume) to be the same family or branch of family of raccoons. When I moved in, I had heard from the neighbors and previous owners about raccoons nesting and being kicked out of various places around the neighborhood, always resulting in them being chased off.
Well shortly after moving in I noticed them around my property semi frequently, but they wouldn’t hang out much and would always be on the move. Eventually, about a year later, I discovered a family consisting of a mom and 3 babies climbing out of a tree in my back yard. I would off and on put some minimal effort into showing them I’m friendly, leaving some food, talking to them, etc.
Shortly after that they started to come near me but would keep 20-30ft off and cautiously take food I would toss at them. After some more time they eventually would come more regularly. One night in particular, I was pretty drunk and was feeding them from off my back deck, where they were hanging out underneath of and would come out when I dropped food. Long story short I ended up throwing up, which caught the curiosity of one of the younger ones. I had my arm hanging over the railing as I was leaned over and the little guy gently grabbed my finger (my drunk ass took it as some quasi raccoon compassion). I didn’t see them much for the rest of the year after that.
Flash forward to this year. I believe mama is gone one way or another, and the babies are grown up. They are living in another tree (or several) in the same area in my backyard. Enough time had passed that I had to get them re acclimated to me again, but it didn’t take long at all. In a matter of weeks they are now almost nightly coming up to my back deck to see me and get some food. It started out cautious on their end, but now our relationship seems to be developing a little too fast. About a week ago, they started taking food from my hand. I would feed them with thick leather gloves and they would occasionally make a hiss(?) sound (less of a hiss and more of like a sharp/heavy exhale but wouldn’t act aggressive). After that first feeding they have become very curious (in what I consider a good way) of my physiology and all 3 of them were touching and feeling my gloves, and seemed puzzled at them being over my hand. After that, however, they started to get a little close for comfort. They would curiously want to touch my foot or get right up on me. Initially I tried to keep them at a small distance by talking or moving at them, and occasionally stomping a foot when they wouldn’t get the hint. This would prompt them to retreat and few feet and catch the hint, but weren’t bothered or seemingly worried that I was aggressive, and have opted to holding a broom to shoo them off if necessary. Flash forward again to last night… I was sitting in a chair in my backyard on my phone and the friendliest/smallest one came running up at me (non aggressively) and completely caught me off guard (didn’t even know it was there until it was within several feet, also very early for them to be out) and I literally jumped and we both scared each other and it ran back about 6ft. I then went inside to get some food, and the little guy followed me to my back door. I came back and went out and fed him without gloves this time and he took it and ate it right there. Next thing I know the other 2 have joined it, and they too are running right up to me. One of them got on its hind legs like normal but started walking straight at me care free. I threw food over its should 2 times hoping it would stop and turn around to get it, but it didn’t care, and kept waddling on its hind legs toward me as I backed up. I threw all the food at its feet and it finally stopped and ate it as I was at my back door. For context I was not wearing gloves, had slippers with no socks, and was in thin sweats with no broom, while I normally wear cowboy boots, thick pants, gloves, and have a broom handy just in case, so I felt very vulnerable
