Update on the kit who had its head stuck in a tree opening.
Unfortunately, I do not have good news. The kit did not survive.
I managed to contact a raccoon rescue through friends. Most of the day was spent figuring out a plan, who was available to meet, and how to put our plan into action. We were communicating with a lot of people at this time to figure out the best course of action. This included firefighters, park rangers, other rescuers, folks online, and so forth.
Due to the situation, we all agreed hiring an arborist was the best course of action. We needed someone to climb the tree to access the kit. There were no ladders long enough to do this. The rescue managed to find an arborist in NJ who was willing to drive out to Queens, 2 hours each way , to help the poor fellow out. He was only available to come out this evening.
The kit was barely hanging on this morning, and by the time I got there, it looked lifeless. I met with the arborist, and he began setting up his gear. When he went up, he discovered a dead piece of wood dislodged in the nest and pinned the kit in the opening. 😢 The mother and two other kits were still in the nest, so it was a challenge for the arborist to remove the lifeless kit. He knows it was dead because its eyes were fogged up, the body was stiff, and it wasn’t breathing.
Sorry to be graphic. I want to be as descriptive as possible because I won’t be responding to ANY QUESTIONS HERE. Most people here are nice, but there are a few rude ones that don’t read or think about what they saying and just react.
I thought the Park Rangers could have done more, BUT they are underfunded. They did not have the resources to save this kit. What recently happened in the White House will have a greater impact on public services.
Lastly, I want to thank everyone who helped out. Especially the rescuers and that arborist. The one rescuer paid out of pocket to do this rescue. There should be a resources list at the top of this sub for easy access for whoever might need it. If I had access to that info right away that kit might be alive.

Have a Question
Just now I had mommy of 3 at one of my feeding stations … I just don’t think one of the babies belong to her and I say this because it’s much smaller than the other 2 babies …. she wasn’t mean or chasing him away but it just appeared that he was clinging to her almost begging for her to care… He was in good shape climbed well enough and was eating/drinking on his own… The size difference was too hard to ignore.
Is it possible that its her baby and its just small or is it possible it’s not hers? If I had to guess the larger babies ages I would say maybe 16 weeks and the little one 12 may even 13 weeks ….Im guessing the bigger babies ages based on Tater’s size. The size was very noticeable.
