How does Rimworld have so many objects in the gameworld without lagging?

I put some 2d tree sprites as prefabs in my gameworld and it seems to lag like crazy if I increase the size of the tilemap and I'm not running update on every monobehaviour either.

Am I supposed to do something like batching or use sprite atlas or sprite backing? Anyone have exp with this? Thanks!

Adding Logic to TMPro Dropdowns?

https://preview.redd.it/12k6501vyjfd1.jpg?width=414&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cdc9efec36ccc65b0937a91bb752d5c5329c5156

I'm looking to attach boolean statements to different dropdown menu option. For example, if dropdown box #1 has the value "Cat" and dropdown box #2 has the value "Dog", then isOrderCorrect should be set to "true". Any ideas on how I can achieve this? Hope this makes sense!

I'm feeling a some kind of crisis in my Unity learning

I became interested in programming a long time ago, it all started when I was 9-10 years old, when we were introduced to Scratch in a computer science class at school.

Since then, I've been fascinated by the idea of creating my own game, I even tried to learn C#, which I did well, but I never reached any decent level. Then I took a course in Unity, which I won at a competition. And despite the very poor level of this course, which I noticed even when I was a complete zero in Untiy, it gave me a good push to study Unity and generally understand the basic principles of this environment.

I started learning Unity relatively actively about a year ago, but it was more of a productivity spurt in moments of inspiration than a regular activity. At the same time, I created my first more or less serious project by my standards at the time. It was a 3D runner in the style of Google's dinosaur game, but with my innovations. It was a frankly bad project in every sense, because I did it without much understanding of even the basic principles of OOP.

So about a month ago, I started working on a new, more serious project, namely a 2D top down shooter with vampire survivors elements. At the same time, I started to learn more about using math in projects, and in general, my skills were better, although they were still at a low level.

And now I have about half of the mechanics ready, but the work has completely stalled. I started watching guides, diving into programming, and I realized how stupid I was in every way, how terrible my code was.

I am now continuing to study C# more deeply, but the problem is that I understand how, for example, delegates or interfaces work, the principles of class inheritance, and so on. But when I think in my head about how I can potentially implement this in new projects or fix my current project, I just have zero ideas.

I want to write the best possible code using all the knowledge I have. I don't want to act on the principle of "if it works, don't touch it." I want to evolve as a programmer and game developer, but I just don't know how.

Perhaps someone else has faced a similar situation, I would be happy to hear any advice from more experienced developers.

Blocking Raycast by UI

Hello everyone, I'm making a game for gamejam and stock on one problem.

How do I stop mose interactions with object behind UI Layer?

Setup:
I have 2d objects "Tools" with Sprite Renderer, Polygon Collider 2d and a custom "Tool" script. Tool script has OnMouseEnter, OnMouseExit and OnMouseUp, methods that are used to control highlight and open Tool's UI respectively. The UI consist out of number of pannels and buttons including a "Block" panel that is stretched actoss the whole canvas and has "RayCast Target" enabled.

When I click on any of my "Tools" the UI opens and is interactable however I can also click "through" UI and interact with objects behind UI. Idk why this issue persists and I've never had it before. Any suggestions on what's wrong or am I missing something obvious?

Addressing the lack of quality and classification of many posts, and a proposed solution

Hey guys. r/Unity2D is a valuable resource for developers working with Unity in 2D. However, the subreddit has been inundated with low-quality posts that have hindered the community's ability to share knowledge and find solutions efficiently. To address this, I wanted to introduce a proposal that outlines several changes aimed at increasing the overall quality of posts and to make this subreddit more helpful.

# Proposed Changes

1. Mandatory Post Structure:
To encourage clear and concise problem-solving, all posts should adhere to a structured format.
Required sections include:
Describing the Issue: A detailed explanation of the problem, including expected behavior and actual behavior.
Code Snippet: Relevant code sections, formatted for readability (using code blocks).
Error Messages: Complete error messages, if applicable.
What I've Tried: A list of troubleshooting steps already taken.
Unity Version and Platform: Specify the Unity version and target platform.
2. Expanded and Required Flairs:
Implement a more granular flair system to categorize posts effectively.
Mandatory flairs should include:
C# Help: For questions primarily related to C# programming.
Unity Help: For questions specifically about Unity features or functionalities.
Asset Store: For discussions related to the Unity Asset Store.
Performance: For posts about optimization and performance issues.
Tutorials: For sharing tutorials or seeking feedback on tutorials.
3. Image Quality Standards:
To ensure readability and clarity, all images should be:
Screenshots taken directly from the Unity editor or game.
Properly cropped and resized for optimal display.
Avoid blurry or low-resolution images.
4. Moderation and Enforcement:
Enforce the new rules consistently through active moderation.
Provide clear guidelines and examples for users to reference.
Utilize Reddit's built-in tools for removing low-quality posts and enforcing rules.
Consider implementing a temporary ban system for repeat offenders of the rules.

# Expected Outcomes

By implementing these changes, we anticipate several positive outcomes:

1. Improved post quality: Clearer and more informative posts will lead to better discussions and solutions.
2. Increased community engagement: A higher quality subreddit will attract and retain more active users.
3. Faster problem-solving: By providing essential information upfront, users will be able to receive more targeted assistance.
4. Reduced redundancy: Similar questions will be easier to find and address, reducing duplicate posts.

All I want, and I'm sure many of you, is to put effort in to provide valuable and actional feedback to those who put effort into their own problem solving. I hope Moderation takes at least some of these to consideration.

I'd love to everyone's thoughts.

Thanks.

Unity Learn

I'm currently doing the unity learn "Junior Programmer" pathway, and making pretty good progress. However, my main goal in starting Unity was to learn 2D game development, since it's my favorite type. So far in Learn, it is just 3D games. Will I be able to use the concepts from Unity Learn and easily apply them to 2D game development? Are they pretty similar or different?
