The state visit by President Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea also highlights "inter‑regional exchanges," and shared legacies of fighting colonialism, Harare-based analyst Gibson Nyikadzino told Sputnik Africa.

Reclaiming History — Memory, Identity and Africa’s Digital Turn
"Restitution matters symbolically and materially. [...] Cultural extraction was a key element of colonial violence—our belongings, archives, and knowledge were taken alongside labor and sovereignty. The return of heritage can revive cultural practices, reshape identity, restore access to knowledge, and return authority over history and memory to communities themselves."

African Nations Shouldn't Blindly Copy EU's AI Risk Model, Researchers Warn
In their article, Grace Mutung'u (Center for Intellectual Property and Information Technology Law, Kenya) and Kinfe Yilma (University of Leeds, UK) raise two major concerns:
1️⃣ "More laws, less implementation": Preceding tech legislation, like data protection laws, remains largely unenforced across Africa, with oversight bodies either unestablished or under-resourced. AI laws risk becoming equally aspirational.
2️⃣ "Europeanization of African law": Transplanting EU standards ignores
- local contexts,
- informal data flows,
- weak institutional capacity,
- populations with limited ability to exercise legal rights.
Recommendations:
🔘The article calls for Africa-tailored AI regulation, not EU transplants.
🔘It urges scrutiny of AI use in healthcare, policing, and social protection.
🔘It suggests a moratorium on high-risk AI in sensitive sectors until local safeguards are in place.
ℹ️ Since Mauritius launched Africa's first AI strategy in 2018, over a dozen states have followed — many mirroring EU models. Kenya, Ethiopia, and the AU have all adopted EU-style AI frameworks.

Africa Turns to Russia for Faster, Less Conditional Partnerships: Economist
🌍African countries are frustrated with traditional EU cooperation frameworks, which they see as perpetuating a donor‑recipient hierarchy, according to Dr. Edwin Nwachukwu of Nigeria's Nnamdi Azikiwe University.
European conditionality reinforces the perception that Africa lacks policy autonomy, he told Sputnik Africa.
"Africa is not rejecting Europe but demanding new terms: greater autonomy, faster delivery, and partnerships aligned with African priorities," Nwachukwu said.
"It doesn’t replace that system but reduces its monopoly and forces more negotiation of rules and standards," Nwachukwu concluded.
Unprotected and Uncompensated: How Tech Giants Profit From Exploiting Africa's Data
🎙Several Western multinational tech corporations extract billions in value from digital activities of the continent's internet users, leaving them with negligible data protection or financial compensation.
In this episode #AfricanCurrents podcast interrogates the parallels between historical colonialism and Western tech companies extracting African data (which critics call "data colonialism") while limiting Africa’s role in AI development and profit-sharing, with Paschal Ogana, Founder & Lead Director, Cybersecurity Intelligence Unit, Abuja, Nigeria.
