🇿🇦 Ramaphosa apologizes for 2019 misinterpreted "1-million houses in Alexandra" promise
"To the extent that it created that impression, I apologize. What I really meant was a target for the whole country," President Cyril Ramaphosa explained following the question of EFF leader Julius Malema in the National Assembly on Thursday.
He explained to the parliament that the target of his promise in 2019 was countrywide, not just for South Africa's township of Alexandra.
"A recording of my address in Alexandra would reveal that my one million homes promise was misinterpreted. It’s not physically possible to build so many houses in Alexandra alone," the South African leader clarified.
He acknowledged the government's failure to address poor living conditions and apartheid spatial planning, adding that the situation facing the people of Alexandra was very significant to him.
Ramaphosa also noted that people were occupying vacant buildings out of desperation due to local government inefficiencies in spending allocated housing funds.

🗣🇿🇼 Mastering languages is key to fostering robust international relations, Zimbabwean town secretary says
Teaching children various languages in both informal and formal settings will significantly enhance effective communication and strengthen international ties, Sheri Nyakudya, Town Secretary for Mvurwi Town Council, Zimbabwe, told Sputnik Africa.
💬 "The target, again, is also the youth. Those youths who we have now can also have some classes where they are taught the Russian language as well as the Zimbabwean languages," she proposed.
🔃 Nyakudya added that cultural exchange programs and city twinning initiatives can significantly contribute to language learning as these exchange programs can expedite the process of understanding and communicating in each other's languages.
💰 Aside from that, the town secretary highlighted the Zimbabwe's president's well-known mantra, "a friend to everyone and an enemy to none," which emphasizes the country's longstanding policy of openness, including its willingness to engage in commerce.
💬 "We also have many areas where people can come and maybe engage in. We've got mining, we've got tourism, we've got farming, manufacturing. All those areas are open for business. So Russia is welcome to come in with that," Nyakudya concluded.
❓And how many languages do you speak? Tell us in the comments! 👇

🇨🇳🌍 China increases loans to Africa for the first time since 2016 amid strategic shifts
Chinese lenders approved $4.61 billion in loans to Africa in 2022, the first increase in seven years, according to Boston University's Global Development Policy Centre's study.
Between 2012-2018, Africa received over $10 billion annually under President Xi Jinping's Belt and Road Initiative, but lending dropped sharply from 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
China’s lending in 2022 more than tripled from the previous year, signaling a shift towards more sustainable loan practices. This comes as Beijing prepares to host the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, with 13 loan agreements last year involving eight African countries and two multilateral lenders.
Major loans included nearly $1 billion from China Development Bank to Nigeria for the Kaduna-to-Kano Railway and a similar facility to Egypt's central bank. China has become the top bilateral lender for many African nations, lending $182.28 billion between 2000-2023, primarily to energy, transport, and ICT sectors.
Over half of the 2022 loans, totaling $2.59 billion, went to regional and national lenders, reflecting China’s strategy to mitigate risks associated with African debt. About 10% of the loans supported renewable energy projects.

🇿🇦🇵🇸 South African president confident in ICJ case on Gaza genocide
Addressing the parliament, President Cyril Ramaphosa mentioned that the government's legal team is preparing a comprehensive court memorial to prove ongoing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, nearing 500 pages, due in October. He noted that the memorial includes photographic and video evidence.
John Hlophe, the new leader of the MK Party in the parliament, inquired about steps to ensure that interim measures ordered by the ICJ are implemented in Gaza. Ramaphosa highlighted the support from several nations and court victories to date as proof of the case's strength.
The president emphasized that this historic case underscores South Africa's empathy for Palestinians.
"All this is being done to not only support the people of Palestine, but to ensure that we live up to our own values and principles of respect for human rights and for justice," Ramaphosa said.
The government remains committed to advocating for an independent Palestinian state to coexist peacefully with Israel, he added.

🌍📱 Lost in the scroll: How social media is diverting Africa’s youth from purpose and progress
Disconnection from reality due to a negative part of social media is concerning given Africa's need for purpose-driven youth who can drive progress and innovation, EriseMary Mbunui Dinga, founder EMMI Empire Inc and ambassador of Youth Connekt Cameroon, told Sputnik Africa.
💬 "If we want to build Africa, we cannot build Africa with people who are disconnected from the realities. [...] These realities will only be changed by us accepting that we need to work hard. We need to change our mentality. We need to focus on innovation and creative thinking. We need to focus on acting, [and] on people achieving results, physical results, not social media results," she urged.
To address this growing issue, Dinga called for policies that limit social media usage and promote more educational content. Such measures could help redirect the energy of Africa's youth towards activities that contribute to their personal development and the continent's future
Having grown up in poverty, Dinga understands the value of hard work. This inspired her to create the EMMI Empire platform, which helps young girls avoid similar struggles, realize their potential, pursue their dreams, achieve financial independence, and advance their education.
🗣 "My mission is sustainable empowerment. I know the United Nations talks about sustainable development. I said [that] there is no sustainable development without sustainable empowerment, because it is empowerment that leads to development. [...] Sustainable empowerment is for the youth, of course, because they are the future [...]," she underscored.

Friendly fire or defective old plane? How Ukraine lost its first F-16 jet and famed pilot
One of the first Ukrainian F-16 jets crashed on August 26, the Ukrainian Air Force confirmed on Thursday. Ukrainian MP Maryana Bezuglaya claimed the F-16 was hit by Ukraine's Patriot anti-aircraft missile system "due to a lack of coordination between units."
When were the first F-16s delivered to Ukraine?
▪️The first batch of six of the promised 80 F-16s arrived in Ukraine at the beginning of August.
▪️It's unclear who exactly provided the first batch: Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands and Norway earlier vowed to provide the Kiev regime with them.
▪️US President Joe Biden first authorized NATO's European allies to send F-16s to Ukraine in August 2023.
How much does the F-16 cost?
▪️The US-made F-16 that was delivered to Ukraine can cost up to $60 million depending on the configuration and possible upgrades, according to some estimates.
▪️As per the WSJ, many of the F-16s promised to Ukraine are second-hand and have decades of flying time already.
What's known about the crash?
▪️According to US officials, the jet wasn't shot down by the Russian military. Sources close to the Ukrainian military claim the crash's reason is "unknown."
▪️The plane was piloted by Oleksiy "Moonfish" Mes, one of Kiev's first pilots to be trained on the US-made F-16. He died during the crash. Mes had undergone months of training in Denmark, as per Forbes.
▪️US officials, cited by the WSJ, said Ukrainian pilots got an "accelerated training course" to learn to operate the F-16s and lacked flying hours.
What do Ukrainian general staff and the Pentagon say?
▪️The Pentagon said it cannot confirm the F-16 was downed by the Patriot system.
▪️The Ukrainian general staff stated that "a special commission... has been appointed to determine the causes of the crash."

🇳🇬💵 Nigeria approves 50% electricity subsidy for public hospitals
🏥 The announcement came from Tunji Alausa, Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, during his visit to the National Neo-Psychiatric Hospital in Barnawa, Kaduna State. Alausa emphasized that this subsidy would help lower the running costs of public hospitals, making healthcare more accessible.
Despite this approval, challenges remain, as demonstrated by the recent disconnection of the University of Lagos from the power grid by Eko Electricity Distribution Company due to unpaid bills. While the government has committed to aiding public universities and hospitals, it has also made it clear that private businesses within these institutions will not be subsidized, local media reported.
The Ministry of Power is currently working on a detailed plan to ensure that the subsidy is correctly implemented. This includes metering all businesses within these institutions to prevent subsidizing commercial activities. The government aims to strike a balance by supporting essential health and educational services while ensuring fairness in subsidy allocation.
