🇰🇪 University of Nairobi students stage a protest in Nairobi, voicing their opposition to the new university funding model
Their primary concern is the accommodation fee cap of about $326, which they deem excessive given the deplorable living conditions on campus. In a letter published on August 16th, the Student Council President of the University of Nairobi urged immediate action, highlighting that the maximum acceptable fee should be $116.
The students reject the new funding model, arguing that education should not be treated as a commodity for profit. They fear that this model will disproportionately impact poorer students, hindering their access to higher education.
According to the Kenyan government, the New Higher Education Funding Model, introduced in May 2023, aims to ensure adequate funding for public universities and (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) institutions amidst rising enrollment. Instead of relying on block funding, the model provides scholarships, loans, and household contributions for students.

🇸🇿 Swazi girls celebrate the annual Umhlanga ceremony
💃 Thousands of unmarried and childless Swazi girls and women are participating in the eight-day event, also known as the Reed Dance, showcasing Swazi culture through song, dance, and traditional dress.
Umhlanga takes place in Eswatini annually at the end of August or at the beginning of September. The ceremony was created in the 1940s Eswatini under the rule of Sobhuza II, and is an adaptation of the much older Umchwasho ceremony.
Young girls gather at the Queen Mother's village, Ludzidzini, to participate in the ceremony, which involves collecting reeds, preparing traditional costumes, and performing dances in front of the royal family and spectators.
The Swazi King's many daughters and royal princesses also participate in the reed dance ceremony and are distinguished by the crown of red feathers they wear in their hair.

🎧 Tune in to the #AfricanCurrents episode for an important conversation with host Chimauchem Nwosu and South African medical experts about the country's transformative changes in contemporary medicine.
🗣 "If you go into a country which has got no cleft services, the first thing you want to do is to do the building, work with the Health Ministry and the local people to make sure that you are a welcome guest there, trying to improve the conditions. So that's the first part [...]. The next part is to try and see how you can treat those patients. Create missions so that you can actually sort of make a small dent in the numbers of patients that are waiting. But more importantly, try and educate the local people, all the healthcare workers {...] and that makes an impact, a long lasting impact," Professor Anil Madaree, Head of the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine, University of Kwa-Zulu Natal, explains.

🌍🌾 In this episode of #GlobalSouthPole, host Aliyu Bello engages with experts to discuss Africa's potential as a promising market for Russian grain exports. They gave insights into the economic impact of this trade, examining how increased grain supply can enhance food security and foster agricultural development across the continent.
🗣 "By using national currencies, Russia and African countries can reduce their reliance on the US dollars, minimizing exchange rate risks and potential sanctions impact. Secondly, it is going to simplify transactions, that is, direct currency exchange will streamline transactions, reducing conversion costs, and complexities. And then thirdly, it will increase trade efficiency, that is, faster and more secure payment will facilitate trade, enabling Russian agricultural exporters to expand their market share in Africa," Peter Njiforti, a Professor of Economics, at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria said.

🌍🌳 Baobab Boom? African countries poised to capitalize on growing demand for superfood
Demand for baobab powder, a nutrient-rich ingredient derived from the "tree of life," is steadily increasing worldwide, presenting a lucrative opportunity for African producers. In an interview with Sputnik Africa, Dr. Daniel Micheal Okello, a lecturer in agricultural economics at Kabale University in Uganda, explained how Africans can profit from this trend.
🗣 “The current demand for the baobab powder as well as its associated products has been increasing and is actually expanding due to a number of factors, including, consumers being sensitive about what they consume,” Dr. Okello said.
He added that the rise in baobab power demand could also be “partly due to a rise in the number of the middle-class people who tend to be more critical about what they consume so that they're able to remain healthy.”
🗣 “Of course, that is also driven by the global expansion of the brand - a product from a tree - that has occurred naturally, awareness of its benefits has led to expansion of its demand worldwide,” he explained.
Dr. Okello also highlighted the potential of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to facilitate trade within the continent, enabling African countries to collectively negotiate better deals with international buyers.
The agricultural economist also emphasized the power of storytelling and branding in building consumer trust and increasing market reach.
🗣 “If you are able to inform more people, create that awareness … that would go a long way in ensuring that an increasing number of people get interested in the product, and they are likely to develop that trust,” the expert advised.
Dr. Okello sees significant potential for collaboration between Russia and African countries in the baobab sector. According to him, Russia, a leading exporter of wheat and grains, could provide support in several areas including research and development, technology transfer, and product innovation.
🗣 “If, for instance, you have a development partner like Russia that can invest into some of those areas that the African governments themselves are unable to, because of priorities that are so many … also you could invest in sustainable food processing technologies,” he concluded.
