▪️Italy’s government plans to cut the annual licence fee that funds public broadcaster RAI. Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini announced the licence fee will be reduced from 90 to 70 euros in the next year’s budget, following up on what his right-wing League party sees as a plan to abolish the fee altogether.

▪️The military conflict that started over a week ago following Hamas’ attack against Israel has had a heavy toll on journalists as part of its broader impact on the lives of civilians in Israel and Gaza. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) estimates that at least 17 journalists died as a result of the war as of October 17.

▪️The 2023 Daphne Caruana Galizia Prize for Journalism went to a consortium of Greek, German and British newsrooms that investigated the Messenia migrant boat disaster, which left around 600 migrants dead near the shores of Greece in June this year.

▪️Spotify announced a new AI-powered voice translation feature that would automatically reproduce podcasts in other languages with the podcaster’s own voice. The pilot rollout includes several episodes translated from English into Spanish, French and German.

▪️French media tycoon Xavier Niel has purchased a stake at Le Monde that belonged to Czech billionaire Daniel Křetínský, working towards a plan to transfer ownership of the major French newspaper to a foundation that would protect its editorial independence. Financial Times estimates the deal at around €50 million.

▪️The Financial Times grew its revenues by 5% to £458m in 2022 and saw particularly strong results in its advertising and events businesses, Press Gazette reports citing the company’s UK financial reporting and unaudited internal figures.

▪️France saw the launch of a new Sunday paper last weekend. La Tribune Dimanche is the first major print newspaper launched in the country in the last decade. As The Guardian reports, the paper is a “reinvention” of La Tribune, a popular financial newspaper that went fully digital three years ago.

▪️The Washington Post will cut about 240 jobs across the organisation in the wake of “overly optimistic” projections of traffic and revenue growth. The publisher’s interim CEO Patty Stonesifer noted in an email update to employees that the company hopes to avoid layoffs and achieve the cuts with voluntary buyouts.

▪️Evan Gershkovich, a reporter for The Wall Street Journal detained in Russia, lost his appeal against the decision to extend his pre-trial detention. He remains in jail in Moscow, marking over half a year since the time he was detained under bogus espionage charges while reporting in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg.

▪️A new report from Axios based on Similarweb data illustrates just how much traffic referrals to the top global news sites from Facebook and X (Twitter) has fallen over the past year.

▪️Publishers have been concerned about chatbots syphoning traffic since the launch of ChatGPT and similar tools a year ago. In recent days, though, the fears got accelerated as ChatGPT received an update that enables the tool to browse content on the internet in real time, as opposed to having a knowledge cutoff for everything published after September 2021.
