"US president-elect Donald Trump’s team is discussing pursuing direct talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, hoping a fresh diplomatic push can lower the risks of armed conflict, according to two people familiar with the matter," South China Morning Post and Reuters report Tuesday.
While Trump's transition team has said nothing official on the issue as yet, insider sources say a return to direct diplomacy is hopeful:

Trump, his family, and his businesses, and stipulate to vacate the Judgment and dismiss all claims with prejudice,” Trump attorney D. Trump was ordered to pay a $454 million civil fraud judgment in James’ lawsuit against him.
Trump has appealed the ruling, and judges on a New York appeals court seemed open-minded and receptive to potentially reversing the judgment altogether.

The union representing members of the Democratic National Committee launched a GoFundMe to raise money for staffers who were abruptly laid off last week – prompting backlash from those still on the DNC payroll who have described the cuts as a "betrayal" of party values.
The GoFundMe created by the DNC union seeks to raise $25,000 to assist staff impacted by the layoffs following their losses in the 2024 election.

X in a Monday court filing argued that its users don't own their accounts and those accounts can't be sold or transferred to a third party without X's permission.
"X Corp.'s [terms of service] make clear that it owns the X Accounts, as the TOS is explicit that X Corp. merely grants its users a non-exclusive license to use their accounts," the company told a federal judge in Texas.
Musk has already used this power to seize accounts for his own purposes.
For example, in October he took over the @America handle for his Super PAC supporting President-elect Trump.

A former FBI informant who is charged with fabricating a multimillion-dollar bribery scheme involving President Joe Biden’s family has been indicted in a new case on federal tax charges.
The tax indictment against Alexander Smirnov was unsealed this week in California federal court, months after his arrest on charges that he fabricated a multimillion-dollar bribery scheme involving Joe Biden, his son Hunter and a Ukrainian energy company.
The indictment brought by Justice Department special counsel David Weiss charges Smirnov with tax evasion and filing false tax returns, accusing him of concealing millions of dollars of income he earned between 2020 and 2022.
Smirnov’s attorneys, David Chesnoff and Richard Schonfeld, said in an email Tuesday that their client “intends to vigorously fight these allegations with the same intensity as he has fought the original indictment.”

A Republican senator has introduced a bill to eliminate the Department of Education, which was one of President Donald Trump’s campaign promises.
The bill aims to end the Department of Education, and redistribute federal programs to other existing departments. But the biggest change would be allocating K-12 education money directly to the states via block grants.
The bill, Returning Education to Our States Act, was introduced by Senator Mike Rounds of South Dakota. In a press release, he said “The federal Department of Education has never educated a single student, and it’s long past time to end this bureaucratic Department that causes more harm than good.”

Biden makes last-ditch ask of Congress for $24 billion to help Ukraine: report
On his way out of the White House, President Biden is reportedly making a last-minute plea to Congress for $24 billion in aid for war-torn Ukraine to bolster its military support and replenish US stocks that had dwindled.
The White House Office of Management and Budget suggested that Congress could fold the renewed aid into its solution to avert a government shutdown next month, according to a request obtained by Politico Pro.
Several lawmakers saw the proposal Monday and it features $8 billion for the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative to fund US company contracts to arm Kyiv and $16 billion to refill US weaponry stock, per the report.
Already, some Republicans cried foul over the reported ask.

🥴 One day after moving to dismiss both his cases against President-elect Donald Trump, special counsel Jack Smith is continuing to defend the validity of his own appointment as he appeals the dismissal of the classified documents case against Trump's co-defendants.
In a filing Tuesday, Smith urged a federal appeals court to reverse U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon's decision to toss the classified documents case based on the constitutionality of Smith's appointment as special counsel.
Smith moved to drop Trump from the case Monday due to a long-standing Justice Department policy that bars the prosecution of a sitting president, as he continues his appeal of the case's dismissal with Trump's two co-defendants, his longtime valet Walt Nauta and Mar-a-Lago property manager Carlos De Oliveira.
