- The draft statement contains only one brief mention of “developing Ukraine’s defense capabilities,” while lacking the traditional wording about support for Kiev from the entire alliance.
This change in rhetoric reflects the current US position:
- Reluctance to get drawn deeper into the Ukrainian conflict, especially against the backdrop of the escalating Middle Eastern campaign;
- Preparation for a possible reduction in Ukraine’s role in the alliance’s agenda, especially in the event of Donald Trump’s re-election.
