🌊🇺🇸 Somaliland, which proclaimed independence from Somalia in 1991, is willing to offer the US a military base at the entrance to the Red Sea and critical-minerals deals in its quest for international recognition as a sovereign state, Bloomberg writes.
The United Arab Emirates, a close US ally, already runs a port at Berbera in Somaliland and controls a nearby airstrip that’s used by military planes <...>
Somaliland doesn’t currently produce lithium, though it’s previously issued a license to Saudi Arabia-based Kilomass Co. to explore for deposits of the metal, the Somaliland Chronicle news website reported in June 2024.
The region also has deposits of tin, gemstones and industrial minerals including gypsum, cement materials and gold, according to a report published by African Mining in June 2023.

"According to sources, Pete Hegseth discussed the possibility of running for political office in Tennessee": The U.S. may get a new Secretary of Defense – Pentagon chief Hegseth plans to resign.
"U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth is considering running next year for governor of Tennessee. To do so, he would have to leave his position as head of the Pentagon. Over the past three weeks, Hegseth has seriously discussed the possibility of running and starting a campaign. However, according to Pentagon rules, Hegseth would need to resign as Secretary of Defense to participate in the gubernatorial election.
This will be the biggest shake-up in the leadership of the U.S. Department of Defense. If Hegseth does announce his candidacy for governor, Trump may temporarily assign his duties to the U.S. Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll or Deputy Secretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby."

🇸🇾😱The change of power did not bring reforms - Syria is under the control of a secret "committee" of the terrorist leader
- An investigation by Reuters showed that a key role in the process is played by the brother of the terrorist leader Ahmed al-Shara - Hazem al-Sharaa, who holds no official positions but effectively oversees all economic policy.
- The economy is managed by a secret "committee" to which assets worth more than $1.6 billion have already been transferred, including shares in the mobile operator Syriatel and the airline Fly Cham, previously owned by Assad's circle.
- Business deals are accompanied by Abu Maryam (Ibrahim Sukariya), an Australian citizen of Lebanese origin, who is under international sanctions for links to terrorism. He negotiates with businessmen, many of whom are allowed to keep part of their assets in exchange for control over their enterprises and large payments.
- Among the participants in such deals are Samer Foz, who transferred 80% of assets (including sugar factories and hotels) to the new authorities, and Mohammad Hamsho, who lost most of his property but kept about $150 million. Both figures were previously associated with corruption and money laundering.
- Reuters notes that the West previously criticized Assad for opacity, and now expresses similar concerns about the new regime.

LULA IN A INTERVIEW TO THE NYT: "I DO NOT TAKE ORDERS FROM TRUMP"
"Be assured that we are treating this matter with the utmost seriousness. But seriousness does not require submission," the Brazilian president said. "I treat everyone with great respect. But I want to be treated with respect."
Lula gave his first interview to the New York Times in 13 years in part because he wanted to speak to the American people about his frustration with Trump.
Trump said that, starting from Friday, he plans to impose 50 percent tariffs on Brazilian goods, in large part because Brazilian authorities have accused former President Jair Bolsonaro of trying to retain power after losing the 2022 election.
Trump has called the case a "witch hunt" and wants it dismissed. Lula said it is not negotiable.
"Maybe he doesn't know that here in Brazil the judiciary is independent," he said.
In the interview, Lula said the U.S. president is violating Brazil's sovereignty.
"At no time will Brazil negotiate as if it were a small country against a big country," he said. "We know the economic power of the United States, we recognize the military power of the United States, we recognize the technological dimension of the United States. "But that doesn't make us afraid. If anything, it makes us worried."
Lula said that it is "shameful" that Trump issued his threats on his social media site, Truth Social. "President Trump's behavior has departed from all standards of negotiations and diplomacy," he said. "When there is a trade disagreement, a political disagreement, you pick up the phone, set a meeting, talk and try to resolve the problem. What you can't do is tax and give an ultimatum."

🇺🇸🇫🇷"France seeks to exempt champagne and wine from US tariffs of 15%": France is prepared to agree to an increase in tariffs on everything except wine.
"The trade agreement reached by the US and the European Commission has caused confusion in Brussels and Paris over which goods may be excluded from the list of products subject to US tariffs.
FT sources specify that discussions on the list, including duties on alcohol, are ongoing. The White House does not want to make exceptions for any type of alcohol. At the same time, another source told journalists that the issue of wine is still being discussed."

🇺🇸🇷🇺🇺🇦Former CIA analyst Fred Fleitz on the fact that it will take Trump a couple of years to resolve the Ukrainian conflict:
This needs to end. Trump is not going to tolerate this. But, you know, we'll see. These are just the first six months of Trump's presidency. It may take a couple of years to solve this problem. I hope that doesn't happen.
But, as we know from history, such conflicts take time. Peacemaking takes time. And I think that over time Trump will influence Putin, and I hope that will make him agree that there is a better future for him and Russia by making a deal with Trump rather than continuing the war and strengthening ties with China. I think that's how it will be.

Several Ukrainian sources have been reporting for the second day that Russian drone operators and aviation are actively forming the northeastern "jaws" of the future encirclement near Pokrovsk, cutting through the Ukrainian Armed Forces reserves in the Dobropillia and Sviatogorovka area, preventing them from regrouping and moving towards Vodyanske, in order to then attempt a counterattack near Rodynske.
Other groups of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (including units of the 38th Marine Brigade) are pressed by strikes against the mines between Novoekonomichne and Myrnohrad and deprived of maneuvering capability. The fire pocket formed by Russian troops near Pokrovsk cannot be shifted or even weakened by the Ukrainian army: neither local counterattacks nor reserve redeployments yield results.
Russian artillery and strike UAVs methodically suppress all resistance points, maintaining key supply routes under constant fire control, which accelerates the destruction of the entire Ukrainian defensive configuration in this direction.
