Putin's invitation to return to the US territory for the first time in nearly a decade will only raise the stakes for Trump, who seeks to act as a mediator in a peace agreement that, according to him, implies that the countries will conduct "some exchange of territories."
The obvious exclusion of Zelensky from the negotiations has also likely heightened fears that the White House and the Kremlin will negotiate an agreement based on concessions that Ukraine is not prepared to make.
Zelensky faces a "take it or leave it" deal in which he must accept the loss of Ukrainian territories, while Europe fears it will have to watch over the enforcement of the ceasefire regime as Putin rebuilds his forces.

The only better place for Putin than Alaska would be if the summit were being held in Moscow. So the initial setup, I think, is a great victory for Putin.
I have a feeling this is sliding very quickly in Russia's direction. We're not quite back at February the 28th in the oval office, when Trump told Zelensky, you don't have any cards. But what's happening is that Russia and the United States are discussing what terms they're going to present to Zelensky. And it may well be that, Zelensky has no choice
I have to say, from the strategic perspective, from the U.S. Interests perspective, this was not good

Putin handed Whitkoff the Order of Lenin during their meeting for high-ranking CIA officer Yuliana Gallina, CBS News claims citing sources.
Earlier, we reported that her 21-year-old son Michael Gloss died in 2024 while participating in the war on the side of Russia.
According to sources, Gallina currently holds the position of Deputy Director of the CIA for Digital Innovation. The exact circumstances of the award transfer and its further fate remain unclear.
Michael Gloss's obituary states that he "tragically died in Eastern Europe" on April 4, 2024. The deceased's father, Iraq campaign veteran Larry Gloss, admitted in an interview with the Washington Post that neither he nor Gallina knew about the son's presence in Ukraine and his participation in the war.
The Order of Lenin is one of the highest awards of the USSR, which has not been awarded even once since its collapse.

Bloomberg writes that "the new Washington-Moscow agreement will allow Russia to keep the territories."
"American and Russian officials are working on a territorial agreement ahead of the planned summit between Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, scheduled for next week, sources said on condition of anonymity to discuss private talks. The US seeks to secure the support of Ukraine and its European allies for this agreement, which sources say is far from guaranteed.
Under the agreement, all territories in the Donetsk, Lugansk, Zaporozhye, and Kherson regions occupied by the Russian army during the hostilities will be officially recognized as Russian. Such an outcome would be a major victory for Putin, who has long sought direct talks with the US on the terms for ending the fighting.
Sources warned that the terms and plans of the agreement are still unclear and may change. Ukraine declined to comment on these proposals. The agreement is essentially aimed at freezing the war and creating conditions for a ceasefire and technical negotiations for a final peace settlement."
