PERSEVERE FOR THE BEST

Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya (ALLĀH have mercy on him) said:

“Whoever thinks about this Worldly life and the Hereafter, would know that he will never gain either of them except by hardship. He should bear this hardship in order to gain the best and more lasting of them.” {Al-Fawāid || Page 319}

Throughout the day, we experience hunger, thirst and tiredness. We experience difficulties for the sake of ALLĀH. At the end of the day, we gladly eat and say:

“The thirst has gone, the veins have been moistened, and the reward has been secured, if ALLĀH wills” {Abū Dāwūd #2357}.

Likewise, throughout our lives we should undergo struggle and difficulties in seeking knowledge, establishing the dīn of ALLĀH on HIS earth, and staying away from the ḥarām. And at the time of death, we hope that we will also figuratively say: “The thirst has gone, the veins have been moistened, and the reward has been secured, if ALLĀH wills.” The difficulties have come to an end, and we hope for a great reward from ALLĀH, as ALLĀH mentioned:

˹As for˺ those who believe and do good, WE will certainly house them in ˹elevated˺ mansions in Paradise, under which rivers flow, to stay there forever. Excellent is the reward of the ˹righteous˺ workers — those who patiently endure, and put their trust in their Lord! {Al-ʿAnkabūt: 58-59}

We ask ALLĀH al-Qawiyy to grant us the strength to stay away from sins, the ability to persevere on the truth, and make us of those who will attain everlasting pleasure. Aamīn

Have you seen he who has taken as his god his ˹own˺ desire, and ALLĀH has sent him astray due to knowledge and has set a seal upon his hearing and his heart and put over his vision a veil? So who will guide him after ALLĀH? Then will you not be reminded?

And they say, "There is nothing beyond our worldly life. We die; others are born. And nothing destroys us but ˹the passage of˺ time." And they have of that no knowledge; they are only assuming.

And whenever OUR clear revelations are recited to them, their only argument is to say: "Bring our forefathers back, if what you say is true!"

Say, ALLĀH causes you to live, then causes you to die; then HE will assemble you for the Day of Resurrection, about which there is no doubt, but most of the people do not know.

NAVIGATING THROUGH DIFFICULT ECONOMIC CONDITIONS

1⃣ CHOOSE GRATITUDE

Refocus your mindset from complaints about the rising cost of commodities to gratitude, recognizing that all attainments are granted by ALLAH'S permission Alone. Whether a commodity costs $1 or $100, attaining it can only occur with the permission of ALLĀH. The Prophet ﷺ will say after each prayer: "O ALLĀH, there is none who can withhold what YOU give, and none may give what YOU have withheld..."

{Al-Bukhari 1/255}

It's crucial to resist Shaytan's influence, which can obscure our reasoning and lead us into a cycle of ingratitude through complaint. Embracing gratitude fosters contentment and invites further blessings into our lives as ALLĀH promised: "If you are grateful, I will certainly give you more." {Ibrāhim: Verse 7}

2⃣ MAKE THINGS EASY FOR THE PEOPLE

We all have a service or commodity we offer to the people, how much ease are we granting to the people? One of the means of attaining ease is being a source of ease for another. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever brings ease to the one who is in difficulty, Allāh will bring him ease in this world and the Hereafter." {Muslim #2699}

He ﷺ also said, "May ALLĀH have mercy on a man who is lenient when selling, buying, and seeking repayment."
{al-Bukhārī #2076}

3⃣ MAKE DU'A FOR THE LEADERS

It's a very common practice amongst the ignorant to curse the leaders. This is contrary to the practice of the true believers, wanting good for the rulers and supplicating to ALLĀH for them is an important feature of the true believer. It is reported that Al-Fudayl B. ʿAyyād (ALLĀH have mercy on him) said, "If I had one supplication that was going to be answered I would make it for the ruler, for the wellbeing and righteousness of the ruler means wellbeing for the land and its people." {Siyar A’lām al-Nubalā 8/434}

4⃣ RELY ON ALLĀH AND ASK FROM HIM ALONE

Al-Hassan al-Basri (ALLĀH have mercy on him) said: "If people called on ALLĀH when put to trial because of their rulers, ALLĀH would relieve their suffering; but instead they resorted to the sword, so they were left to it. And not one day of good did they bring. Then he recited: "And the good word of your Lord was fulfilled for the Children of Israel, for the patience and perseverance they had, and WE destroyed the works of Pharaoh and his people and what they had erected." {Al-A'rāf: 137}

{al-Tafsir #8897}

Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (ALLĀH be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ) said, "Verily, after me there will be undue favouritism and matters you will reject." They said, "O Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ, what do you order us to do if we reach that time?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "Fulfill the duties placed over you and ask ALLĀH for what belongs to you." {Bukha‌ri‌ #3603 & Muslim #1843}

5⃣ PRUDENT FINANCIAL PLANNING

Practice responsible financial management by budgeting, saving, and avoiding unnecessary expenses. In describing the righteous believers, ALLĀH says in the Qur’an, "And [they are] those who, when they spend, do so not excessively or sparingly but are ever, between that, justly moderate." {Furqan: Verse 67}

The Prophet ﷺ also said, "Eat, drink, give in charity, and wear nice clothing, but without pride and extravagance. Verily, ALLĀH loves for HIS blessings to be seen upon HIS servants." {Musnad Aḥmad #6656}

May ALLĀH rectify our affairs.

FACTORS THAT MAY PREVENT THE ACCEPTANCE OF DU'A

Ibn al-Qayyim (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said: "Du'a and the seeking of protection of ALLĀH are like weapons, but the sharpness of a weapon is not sufficient for it to cause effect, for the person that handles it also plays a role. So whenever the weapon is a perfect one, having no blemish in it, and the forearm is strong, and there are no preventing factors, then it will cause as effect on the enemy. But if any of these three factors are missing, then the effect will also be lessened."

{Disease and the cure: Page 31}

While we may be aware of the factors that aids the acceptance of dua, many are unaware of the factors that can hinder its acceptance. Below are some of the factors that may prevent an individual's du'a from being answered:

1⃣ ASSOCIATING PARTNERS WITH ALLĀH

The Prophet ﷺ said: "ALLĀH Almighty said: Verily, I am free of the idolatry of any partners. Whoever performs a deed in which he associates another with ME, I will abandon him to his partner."

ALLĀH said: "Those you invoke besides HIM do not possess even the skin of a date stone. If you invoke them, they do not hear your supplication; and if they heard, they would not respond to you."

{Fātir: 13-14}

2⃣ CONTRADICTING THE SUNNAH

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever performs a deed that is not in accordance with our matter (i.e, Islam), it will be rejected."

{Muslim #1718}

3⃣ UNCERTAINTY

ALLĀH said: "And your Lord says, Call upon ME; I will respond to you.

{Ghāfir: 60}

The Prophet ﷺ said: "When you ask from ALLĀH Almighty, O people, then ask HIM while you are convinced HE will answer."

{Musnad Ahmad #6655}

4⃣ UNMINDFULNESS

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Know that ALLĀH will not answer the supplication of a heart that is unmindful and distracted."

{Tirmidhi #3479}

5⃣ HASTENING WHILE MAKING DU'A

Fadalah ibn ‘Ubayd (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) said: Whilst the Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ was sitting, a man came in and prayed and said, "O ALLĀH, forgive me and have mercy on me." The Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ said, "You have been too hasty, O worshipper. When you have prayed and are sitting, praise ALLĀH as HE deserves to be praised, and send blessings upon me, then call upon HIM."

{Tirmidhi #3476}

6⃣ HASTENING IN SEEKING RESPONSE

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Every one of you will have his supplications answered, as long as he is not hasty."

It was said, "What does being hasty mean?" He ﷺ said: "When he says, ‘I made du’a and I made du’a, and I have not seen any response,’ and he gets frustrated and stops making du’a."

{al-Bukhari #6340; Muslim #2735}

7⃣ MAKING THE DU'A CONDITIONAL

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Let not any one of you say, O ALLĀH, forgive me if YOU will, O ALLĀH, have mercy on me if YOU will. Let him be resolute in the matter, whilst knowing that no one can compel ALLĀH to do anything."

{Bukhari #6339}

8⃣ CONSUMING HARAM

The Prophet ﷺ mentioned a man who had some of the characteristics which help Du'a to be answered, but he wasn't responded to because, as the Prophet mentioned: "His food is haram, his drink is haram, all his nourishment is haram, so how can his Du`a be accepted?

{Muslim #1015}

In order for Du'as to be answered, it is not essential to adhere to all of these points and be free of all that could prevent one's Du'a from being answered. That is something which happens very rarely. But one has to try hard and strive towards achieving this.

We ask ALLĀH to accept our du'a during and beyond these blessed days. Aamīn

DO NOT ASSOCIATE ANYTHING IN WORSHIP WITH ALLĀH

ALLĀH says,

لااَّ تَجْعَل مَعَ اللّهِ إِلَـهًا اخَرَ فَتَقْعُدَ مَذْمُومًا مَّخْذُولااً
Do not associate with ALLĀH any other diety, lest you find yourself disgraced and forsaken.

That is, do not believe that any created being is deserving of any kind of worship or that any of them can be associated with ALLĀH, for that is blameworthy and leads to failure. ALLĀH, HIS angels and HIS Messengers have forbidden the ascription of partners to ALLĀH and have condemned in the strongest terms anyone who does that, describing this action in the worst terms, by using such words that one may conclude from them that the one who does this is the worst in characteristics and the most abhorrent in description.

Such a person is a failure in terms of both worldly and religious affairs, to the extent of his detachment from his Lord. Whoever puts his hopes in anything but ALLĀH is a failure and will be left to the one in whom he put his trust, for no one of ALLĀH'S creation can benefit anyone except by ALLĀH'S leave. Just as the one who believes that there is any other god besides ALLĀH is deserving of blame and is a failure, the one who affirms HIS oneness and devotes his worship to ALLĀH alone, putting his hopes in HIM and no other, is deserving of commendation and will receive help from ALLĀH in all his affairs.

THE BIOGRAPHY OF AL-HĀFIZ IBN KATHĪR

He is: the Imām, the Hāfiz, the Shaikh of the Muhadditheen, the Historian, the Explainer of the Qur’an, Imaaduddeen Abul-Fidaa, Ismaaeel ibn Umar ibn Katheer ibn Daw· ibn Katheer ibn Zar, al-Qurashee; al-Busrawee, then ad-Dimashqee, the jurist, ash-Shaafiee.

He was born in Mijdal, a village to the east of Busraa-which is a town in the province of Damascus, in the year 701 H, where his father was a Khateeb.

After the death of his father he moved, along with his brother Kamaaluddeen AbdulWahhaab, to Damascus, in the year 707 H. He memorized the whole of the Qur·aan at the age of ten, and he read the different recitations, and he excelled in tafseer.

He married Zaynab the daughter of al-Haafiz Abul-Hajjaaj al-Mizzee, and he closely accompanied him and learned from him. He gave great attention to the science of hadeeth, and qualified under him in it. He also accompanied Shaikhul-Islaam Taqiyyuddeen Ibn Taimiyyah and was a special student of his and defended him, and he followed him upon many of his opinions. He used to deliver verdicts in accordance with his view concerning the question of the three simultaneous divorces, that they count as a single divorce, and he was put to trial on account of this and suffered harm.

He gave attention to memorising the texts; and to awareness of the chains of narration, the hidden defects in narrations, the narrators, and to history, to the extent that he excelled in all of that whilst he was still a youth. He delivered verdicts, taught and debated. He excelled in Fiqh, Tafseer, and Arabic Grammar. He closely studied the narrators and the hidden defects in narrations.

He became the Shaikh of the Saalihiyyah School, after the death of adh-Dhahabee; and the Shaikh of Daarul-Hadeeth al-Ashrafiyyah for a short while after the death of as-Subkee. Then this was taken from him after it was seized by Kamaaluddeen al-Maarree.

Ibn Kathīr filled the Islamic library with beneficial works. Some of them have been printed, and others remain in manuscript form.

He (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) died on the day of Thursday, the 26th of Shabaan, in the year 774 H, in Damascus, and he was buried therein.

REWARD FOR PRAYING TARAWĪH WITH THE IMAM UNTIL HE FINISHES AND SOME RULINGS ATTACHED TO IT

Abu Hurayrah (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) said: “ALLĀH’s Messenger ﷺ used to encourage the people to stand (for salah at night) during Ramadān, without sternly ordering them. He would say:

“Whoever stands (in salah in the nights of) Ramadān out of iman and expecting the reward from ALLĀH, he will be forgiven for what has preceded of his sins.” {Muslim #759}

Therefore, it is essential for the Muslim to be diligent in praying tarawīh with the Imam, to not neglect any part of it, and to not turn away before his Imam - even if the Imam prayed more than eleven or thirteen raka'at - due to the saying of the Prophet (ﷺ):

“Whoever stands (in salah) with the Imam until he turns away, will have written for him the standing (in salah) for a whole night.” {Abū Dawūd #1375}

The meaning of the turning away of the Imam is: the end of salah and not the leaving of the first Imam - if it is prayed by more than one Imam. What are they except a few numbered nights that the intelligent person takes advantage of before it is too late?!

Abu Dawūd said, “It was said to Ahmad while I was listening: ‘Is standing (in salah) - meaning tarawih - to be delayed until the last part of the night?’ He said: ‘No, the sunnah of the Muslims is more beloved to me.’” {Masā'il Al-Imām Ahmad by Abu Dawūd || page 62}

If a person desired to pray what has been written for him at the time of suhūr, then he should not pray witr a second time. Rather, he should suffice with his witr (he prayed) with his Imam after Salatul-Tarawih in the first part of the night due to what is found in the hadith of Talq ibn ‘Ali (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) who said that ALLĀH’s Messenger (ﷺ) said: “There are no two witrs in one night.” {Abu Dāwūd #1439}

As for the hadith of Ibn ‘Umar (may ALLĀH be pleased with them) that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Make the last of your prayers at night witr” {Bukhari, #998}

Then this refers to the one who prayed in the last part of the night but did not make witr at the beginning of it. The command regarding this is understood as permissible and not compulsory.

Hence, it is not necessary to conclude the salah in the last part of the night with witr, using as evidence that the Prophet (ﷺ) prayed after his witr in the last part of the night. {Sahih ibn Khuzaymah, 2/159}

After the one praying witr makes taslim he says:
سُبْحَانَ الْمَلِكِ الْقُدُّوْسِ

Subhaanal-Malikil-Quddoosi

"Glorified is the King, the Holy"
three times, raising his voice with the third, due to what was reported from the Prophet (ﷺ).

And ALLĀH knows best.

O ALLĀH! Awaken our hearts from slumber of long hopes and remind us of the nearness of departure and the approach of appointed terms; make our hearts firm on iman and give us success to perform righteous deeds; and forgive us, our parents and all the Muslims.

MAKE THE MOST OF THE BLESSED MONTH OF RAMADĀN!

Eleven days into Ramadān, the visible effects of fasting start kicking in, the rows in tarawīh prayers are reducing, and many are commenting on how tired they are or how thin they look. Hearing these comments is always a very conscious reminder of the hadith below:

Abu Huraira (ALLĀH be pleased with him) related that the Prophet ﷺ said: "Many people who fast get nothing from their fast except hunger and thirst, and many people who pray at night get nothing from it except wakefulness."

{Ibn Majah #1690}

With eleven days (or ten days in some countries) having flown by, this worries me and I wonder to what extent are we actually taking advantage of this blessed month or are we just showing the visible signs and therefore only attaining hunger and thirst?

It would indeed be a big loss if we merely earned hunger, thirst, and sleeplessness from our actions at the end of the month! Let's, therefore, ensure that all our acts of worship during these remaining days of this blessed month are purposeful, absorbing, given due time, and engage our hearts to the fullest.

Anas ibn Malik (ALLĀH be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ said when the month of Ramadān began: "Verily, this month has presented itself to you. There is a night within it that is better than a thousand months. Whoever is deprived of it has been deprived of all good. None is deprived of its good but that he is truly deprived."

{Ibn Majah #1644}

With Ramadān offering a unique opportunity to earn ALLĀH’s pleasure, what more can you and I ask for and what could be said about us if we didn’t make use of this opportunity?

Remember, many who were with us during last year’s Ramadān didn’t live long enough to see this year’s Ramadān, as none of us knows if we will live to see next year’s Ramadān, so why not make the most of it now before it is too late? Let's Ensure we capture as many moments of this month as we can because every moment does count. ALLĀH said:

And Hell will be brought near that Day. On that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance avail him? He will say, Oh, I wish I had sent ahead some good for my life. {Al-Fajr: 23-24}

Ibn Kathīr said, while commenting on the verse: "If he was a disobedient person, he will be sorry for the acts of disobedience he committed. If he was an obedient person, he will wish that he performed more acts of obedience."

May ALLĀH make it easy for us to take full advantage of this blessed month. Aamīn

ARROGANCE

I wonder at him who is fond of his own image and walks with pride while forgetting the beginning of his creation.

His life starts with the small bite of bread, a couple of dates, a piece of meat and some milk that were consumed with a sip of water; afterwards is filtered through the liver and extracted from it are drops of semen that settle in the testicles, which later on are moved by the excitement of his lust to eject out of him and into the mother to remain for a while before the foetus is developed; coming out through the channel of urine as a child.

As for his end, he is thrown in dust to be eaten by worms and becomes ashes the wind blows!

And the ashes of his body keeps moving from one place to another until the Day of Judgment where all his ashes gather again to resur rect once again.

This is the story of the body. As for the soul that is commanded to work righteousness, if its essence was disciplined with manners and straightened with knowledge, it shall realise the existence of the Creator and will fulfil its duties without being affected by the ruining of its ship [i.e. the body].

If it remained ignorant however, then it becomes like clay or even worse.

THE SERVANT IS TESTED WITH OTHERS

As for wealth and poverty, these are trials that ALLĀH decrees for a reason, as HE says:

وَجَعَلۡنَا بَعۡضَكُمۡ لِبَعۡضٍ فِتۡنَةً
WE have made some of you as a trial for others

The Messenger ﷺ is a trial for those to whom he is sent, a test to see who will obey and who will disobey, and We test the Messengers by giving them the mission of calling people. The rich man is a trial for the poor man, and the poor man is a trial for the rich man - and so on, with all types of people in this world, which is the realm of trials and tests. The purpose of that test is to see:

He could have said, “ALLĀH separated me from my family,” or “ALLĀH made me a slave,” or “ALLĀH threw me in jail,” and so on. But he doesn’t complain at all. Rather he is thanking his Lord for HIS kindness.

Today, people are suffering from psychological problems and going from one psychiatrist to another for a cure. We have abundant possessions but minimal peace. If only we picked up the Qur’an and went through the stories of earlier generations, we would be so much at peace. We would learn so much about our shortcomings and comprehend what ALLĀH wants from us.

Yusuf (peace be upon him) neither showed anger towards ALLĀH nor blamed his family. Like any mature person, he was focused on the positives. Whenever Shaytan whispers negative thoughts shun them by thinking about the positive things in your life.

THE VIRTUE OF CALLING OTHERS TO ALLĀH.

ALLĀH says,

وَمَنْ أَحْسَنُ قَوْلاً مِّمَّن دَعَا إِلَى اللَّهِ
And who is better in speech than he who invites to ALLĀH,

means, he calls the servants of ALLĀH to HIM.

وَعَمِلَ صَالِحًا وَقَالَ إِنَّنِي مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ
and does righteous deeds, and says:"I am one of the Muslims."

means, he himself follows that which he says, so it benefits him as well as others. He is not one of those who enjoin good but do not do it themselves, or who forbid evil yet they do it themselves. HE does good and avoids doing evil, and he calls people to their Creator, may HE be blessed and exalted.

This is general in meaning and applies to everyone who calls people to what is good and is himself guided by what he says. The Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ is the foremost among people in this regard, as Muhammad bin Sirin, As-Suddi and Abdur-Rahman bin Zayd bin Aslam said.

It was also said that what was meant here is the righteous Mu'adhdhin, as it was mentioned in Sahih Muslim: "The Mu'adhdhins will be the ones with the longest necks on the Day of Resurrection."

In As-Sunan it is reported that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "The Imam is a guarantor and the Mu'adhdhin is in a position of trust. May ALLĀH guide the Imams and forgive the Mu'adhdhin."

The correct view is that the Ayah is general in meaning, and includes the Mu'adhdhin and others. When this Ayah was revealed, the Adhan had not been prescribed at all. The Ayah was revealed in Makkah, and the Adhan was prescribed in Al-Madinah after the Hijrah, when it was shown to Abdullah bin Abd Rabbihi Al-Ansari in a dream. He told the Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ about it, and he told him to teach it to Bilal, may ALLĀH be pleased with him, who had a more beautiful voice, as we have discussed elsewhere.

So the correct view is that the Ayah is general in meaning, as Abdur-Razzaq said, narrating from Mamar, from Al-Hasan Al-Basri, who recited this Ayah:

وَمَنْ أَحْسَنُ قَوْلاً مِّمَّن دَعَا إِلَى اللَّهِ وَعَمِلَ صَالِحًا وَقَالَ إِنَّنِي مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ

And who is better in speech than he who invites to ALLĀH, and does righteous deeds, and says:"I am one of the Muslims." and said,

"This is the beloved of ALLĀH, this is the close friend of ALLĀH, this is the chosen one of ALLĀH, this is the most beloved of the all the people of earth to ALLĀH. He responded to the call of ALLĀH and called mankind to that to which he had responded. He did righteous deeds in response and said, I am one of the Muslims.' This is ALLĀH'S Khalifah."

SUMMARY OF SĪRAH

SECTION 1⃣

PART 3⃣: HIS BIRTH AND WEANING

1⃣ He ﷺ was born in Makkah on Monday, the twelfth of Rabi’ al-Awwal¹, the year of the Elephant.

2⃣ The year of his birth was called the Year of the Elephant, because the King of Abyssinia sent an army along with a great elephant to Makkah to demolish the Ka'bah in the year of his birth. ALLĀH destroyed the army, in honor of the birth of the Prophet ﷺ.

3⃣ He ﷺ was breastfed after his mother by Thuwaybah al-Aslamiyah, the servant of his uncle Abu Lahab, and then Halīmah al-Sa'diyyah, until he was four years old.

{Khulāsatu Nūrul Yaqīn}

1. Scholars of biography and history have had varying opinions on the exact date of the Prophet's ﷺ birth. Some have mentioned the 2nd, 8th, 10th, and 12th of Rabi' al-Awwal, but they unanimously agree that he was born on a Monday during the Year of the Elephant.

THE DAYS OF SPECIAL BOOTY

O fasting people, this month is our opportunity for sincere repentance. These days are booty for us. Will we not then accept this price and special opportunity? Take the initiative with sincere repentance before your spirit is taken away. Do not take lightly any sin because your final deeds will also be judged. Many people fasted with us last year and have since departed to their Lord. Does not the authority belong to HIM? And, is HE not the swiftest of those who judge? Yes, they all went with their deeds and left behind their traces.

NOTES:

- Use these days to reflect on past actions and seek forgiveness from ALLĀH.

- Make the most of these special days by engaging in acts of worship and seeking closeness to ALLĀH.

- None of us knows when our time will come, so it's crucial to seek forgiveness and amend our ways while we have the chance.

- Don't underestimate sins, recognize their seriousness, strive to avoid them, and seek forgiveness when they occur.

- Be prepared for accountability by striving to lead a righteous life.
