SUMMARIZED RULINGS PERTAINING TO ZAKĀT-UL-FITR

1⃣ What is the ruling of Zakāt-ul-Fitr?

Ibn Baaz (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said: "Zakaatul Fitr is obligatory upon every Muslim whether they be young or old, male or female, free or enslaved."

{Al-Fataawa: 14/197}

2⃣ What can be given out as Zakāt-ul-Fitr?

Ibn Bāz (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said: "A measurement of a Saa' (3 liters) of food like dates, barley, raisins, or anything similar from these types. The correct statement from the scholars is any food from the land of the people that will nourish them like rice, corn and the likes."

3⃣ When can one give out the Zakāt-ul-Fitr?

Ibn Bāz (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said: "One can give the Zakāt-ul-Fitr on the 28th, 29th, 30th (of Ramadān), the night of Eid, or on the morning of Eid before the prayer."

{Al-Fataawa: 14/32-33}

4⃣ Who are the recipients of Zakāt-ul-Fitr?

Ibn Uthaymīn (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said: "There is only one type of recipient and they are the poor and needy."

{Al-Fataawa: 18/259}

5⃣ Is there a specific statement to say or supplication to make when giving out Zakāt-ul-Fitr?

Al-Lajna ad-Daa'imah said: "We do not know of any specific supplication that is said at the time of its distribution."

{Fatāwa ad-Daa'imah, 9/387}

6⃣ Is it permissible to give money as Zakāt-ul-Fitr?

Ibn Bāz (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said: "No, it is not permissible to give money as Zakāt-ul-Fitr as is the statement of many scholars. That is because giving money opposes what has been related from the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions (may ALLĀH be pleased with them)."

{Al-Fataawa: 14/32}

7⃣ Does one have to have a certain amount of wealth in order to give Zakāt-ul-Fitr?

Ibn Bāz (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said: "There is no limit for one to reach. Rather, Zakāt-ul-Fitr is obligatory upon every Muslim to give out on behalf of themselves and on behalf of their families from among their children and spouses who live with them."

{Al-Fataawa: 14/197}

8⃣ Is it permissible to distribute Zakāt-ul-Fitr in another land?

Ibn Bāz (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said: "The sunnah is to distribute the Zakaatul Fitr to the poor in one's own land they are living in without sending it to another land. This is done to suffice the poor and needy in one's land and attend to their needs."

{Al-Fataawa: 14/213}

9⃣ Does Zakāt-ul-Fitr have to be paid for the fetus?

Ibn Uthaymīn (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said: "It is not an obligation to pay for the fetus in the womb, it is only considered to be highly recommended."

{Al-Fataawa: 18/263}

1⃣0⃣ Is it permissible to give Zakāt-ul-Fitr to those who are not Muslims?

Ibn al-Uthaymīn (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said: "It is not permissible to give Zakaatul Fitr except to the poor and needy Muslims."

{Al-Fataawa: 18/285}

1⃣1⃣ What is the ruling of one who takes Zakāt-ul-Fitr then sells it?

Al-Lajna ad-Daa'imah said: "If one of the poor who is deserving of receiving the Zakaatul Fitr takes the Zakaah then sells it then there is nothing wrong with that."

{Fatāwa Al-Lajna ad-Daa'imah, 9/380}

1⃣2⃣ Can one delay distributing Zakāt-ul-Fitr until after the Eid prayer without an excuse?

Ibn Uthaymīn (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) said: "It is impermissible to delay distributing Zakāt-ul-Fitr until after the prayer. If one does this then he/she will not be rewarded as one who distributed the Zakaah. Rather, it will be considered as regular charity."

THE REALITY OF THIS WORLD AND THE HEREAFTER

ALLĀH speaks of this world and the hereafter in a manner which implies that one should lose interest in this world and long for the hereafter. ALLĀH says:

وَمَا هَذِهِ الْحَيَاةُ الدُّنْيَا إِلاَّ لَهْوٌ وَلَعِبٌ
And this life of the world is only an amusement and a play!

Which distracts people’s hearts and minds, because of what ALLĀH has created in it of adornment, pleasures and desires that attract those whose hearts have turned away from the truth and that look attractive to the eyes of the negligent and give joy to souls whose main pursuit is falsehood. But it quickly passes and comes to an end, and the one who is in love with it will get nothing but sorrow, loss and regret.

وَإِنَّ الدَّارَ الاْإخِرَةَ لَهِيَ الْحَيَوَانُ
But the Hereafter is indeed the real life

That is, the perfect life, one of the characteristics of which is that people there will be physically strong, because their bodies and strength will be created for life, and everything will be available there that makes life perfect and brings pleasure and joy and fulfilment of physical desires, by way of food, drink, spouses and so on, such as no eye has seen, no ear has heard, nor has it entered the mind of man.

لَوْ كَانُوا يَعْلَمُونَ
If only they knew.

They would not give precedence to this world over the hereafter, and if only they understood, they would not have lost interest in the abode of the only true life or been distracted by this abode of distraction and play. This indicates that those who have such knowledge must inevitably give precedence to the hereafter over this world, because of what they know about the nature of the two realms.

🌙 ZAKĀT-UL-FITR

Fitr means to break fast or to refrain from fasting. Hence the Eid after the fasts of Ramadān is called Eid-ul-Fitr, as it is the day of rejoicing after the completion of fasting. On this occasion of happiness, as a sign of gratitude, one has to give a specific amount of food in alms, which is called Zakāt-ul-Fitr. To purify and obtain complete blessings for the fasts of Ramadān one has to give Zakāt al-fitr.

It was reported by Ibn Abbās (may ALLĀH be pleased with them) that the Prophet ﷺ made Zakāt-ul-fitr compulsory so that those who fasted may be purified of their idle deeds and shameful talk (committed during Ramadān) and so that the poor may be fed. Whoever gives it before the prayer, it is Zakat-ul-Fitr, and whoever gives it after the prayer, it is ordinary charity.

{Abū Dawūd #1609}

Zakāt-ul-Fitr becomes obligatory on every Muslim, male or female, adult or child, at the end of Ramadān as long as he/she has the means to do so, even those who have not fasted during the month of Ramadān for any valid reason.

Ibn ‘Umar (may ALLĀH be pleased with them) said: “The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ made giving a saa’ of dates or a saa’ of barley as Zakāt-ul-Fitr an obligation for all Muslims, slave and free, male and female, young and old, and ordered that it should be given before the people went out to pray (Salāt-ul-Eid).”

{Al-Bukhari #1503 and Muslim #984}

NOTE: A saa’ is approximately equivalent to three kilograms. It is acceptable to give a saa’ of the local staple food such as rice etc.

🔸THE REASONS FOR GIVING ZAKĀT-UL-FITR 🔸

1⃣ To give Zakāt-ul-Fitr in lieu of the acceptance of one’s fasting.

2⃣ To thank ALLĀH for bestowing on us the strength to fast during the month of Ramadān.

3⃣ To purify one’s fast and obtain the complete blessings of fasting.

4⃣ To celebrate the completion of fasting.

5⃣ To demonstrate the greatness of the day of Eid.

6⃣ To assist the poor in joining the atmosphere of Eid.

THE COMMAND TO MARRY AND ALLĀH'S PROMISE TO ENRICH THE ONE SEEKING CHASTITY THROUGH MARRIAGE

These clear Ayat include a group of unambiguous rulings and firm commands.

وَأَنكِحُوا الاْأَيَامَى مِنكُمْ
And marry the unmarried among you

This is a command to marry.

The Prophet ﷺ said: "O young men, whoever among you can afford to get married, let him marry, for it is more effective in lowering the gaze and protecting the private parts. Whoever cannot do that, then let him fast, for it is a protection for him."

This was recorded in the Two Sahihs from the Hadith of Ibn Masud.

In the Sunan, it was recorded from more than one person that the Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ said: "Marry and have children, for I will be proud of you before the nations on the Day of Resurrection."

وَالصَّالِحِينَ مِنْ عِبَادِكُمْ وَإِمَايِكُمْ
And the righteous among your male slaves and female slaves.

إِن يَكُونُوا فُقَرَاء يُغْنِهِمُ اللَّهُ مِن فَضْلِهِ
If they are poor, ALLĀH will enrich them out of HIS bounty.

Ali bin Abi Talhah reported from Ibn Abbas: "ALLĀH encouraged them to get married, commanded both free men and servants to get married, and HE promised to enrich them."

It was recorded that Ibn Masud said:
"Seek the richness through marriage, for ALLĀH says:

وَالصَّالِحِينَ مِنْ عِبَادِكُمْ وَإِمَايِكُمْ
If they be poor, ALLĀH will enrich them out of His bounty"
{Ibn Jarir}

It was reported from Al-Layth from Muhammad bin Ajlan from Sa`id Al-Maqburi from Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ said: "There are three whom it is a right upon ALLĀH to help: one who gets married seeking chastity; a slave who makes a contract with his master with the aim of buying his freedom; and one who fights for the sake of ALLĀH."

This was recorded by Imam Ahmad, At-Tirmidhi, An-Nasa'i and Ibn Majah.

The Prophet performed the marriage of a man who owned nothing but his waist wrap, and could not even buy a ring made of iron, but he still married him to that woman, making the Mahr his promise to teach her whatever he knew of the Qur'an.

And it is known from the generosity and kindness of ALLĀH that HE provided him with whatever was sufficient for her and for him.

THE SUNNAH OF DUHĀ PRAYER: ITS VIRTUE, WHEN AND HOW IT SHOULD BE PRAYED

1⃣ The Duhā prayer is a Sunnah prayer with great virtue, encouraged by ALLĀH’s Messenger (ﷺ) for his Companions and the believers

It was narrated from Abu Dharr (may ALLĀH be pleased with him), from the Prophet (ﷺ) that he said: "In the morning a charity is due from every joint of one of you. Every tasbeehah is a charity, every tahmeedah is a charity, every tahleelah is a charity, every takbeerah is a charity, enjoining what is good is a charity, forbidding what is evil is a charity, and two rak‘ahs offered in the forenoon (Duha) will suffice for that."

{Muslim #1181}

An-Nawawi (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said: "The words of the Prophet (ﷺ) 'and two rak‘ahs offered in the forenoon (Duha) will suffice for that' are indicative of the great virtue of Duha and how important it is, and that it may be offered with two rak‘ahs."

{Sharh Muslim by an-Nawawi}

2⃣ Duhā prayer time begins 20 minutes after sunrise. It's better to pray it prayer after the sun’s heat has become intense.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "It is preferable to offer Duhā prayer when the sun’s heat has become so intense that even the young of the camels feel it"

{Muslim #748}

The scholars defined this as being when one-quarter of the day has passed, i.e., halfway between sunrise and Dhuhr prayer.

{Al-Majmu’ by al-Nawawi, 4/36}

3⃣ It's time ends until just before noon (Dhuhr).

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymin (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) says: "... ˹The time for the Duha prayer ends˺ ten minutes before Zhur prayer.

{Al-Sharh al-Mumti’, 4/122}

4⃣ The minimum is two rak’ahs with one tasleem, but one can pray four, six, eight, or more.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "…and two rak’ahs offered in the forenoon (Duhā) will suffice for that."

{Muslim #720}

Shaykh Ibn Baz (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said: "The minimum – for Duha – is two rak‘ahs, and there is no maximum number. But the Prophet (ﷺ) prayed two and four rak‘ahs, and on the day of the conquest of Makkah, he prayed Duha with eight rak‘ahs, on the day on which ALLĀH granted him the conquest of Makkah. So this matter is broad in scope. Whether a person prays eight or ten or twelve rak‘ahs, or more than that, or less, there is nothing wrong with it, because the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "The (Sunnah) prayers of the night and day are two (rak‘ahs) by two." The Sunnah is to pray two by two, saying the salam after each two rak‘ahs."

{Majmu‘ Fatawa Ibn Baz, 11/389}

4⃣ There is no specific surah mentioned in the Sunnah regarding the Duhā prayer. Recite whatever is easy of the Qur'an after Surah al-fathia in Duhā prayers.

The Duhā prayer comes with an amazing reward! ALLĀH promises to suffice us on every day that we pray four Rak'ah to begin that day.

It was narrated from Abu’d-Darda’ and Abu Dharr (may ALLĀH be pleased with them both) from the Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ), from ALLĀH, may HE be glorified and exalted, that HE said: "O son of Adam, pray four rak‘ahs to ME at the beginning of the day, and I shall suffice you at the end of the day."

{at-Tirmidhi #437}

Scholars say this refers to the Duhā prayer.

May ALLĀH make us of those who are consistent in praying Duhā!

NURTURE TAQWA TO ALWAYS CHOOSE THE BEST

In life, we are faced with miscellaneous decisions to make. We wish we had a counselor that we could consult with; ALLĀH says,

"O you who have believed, if you fear ALLĀH, HE will grant you a criterion and will remove from you your misdeeds and forgive you. And ALLĀH is the possessor of great bounty."
 {al-Anfāl: Verse 29}

What do we learn from this? The only thing required to make the right decision is Taqwa. If we are conscious of ALLĀH, HE will grant us the ability to distinguish between right and wrong.

ALLĀH mentioned elsewhere:

وَمَن یَتَّقِ ٱللَّهَ یَجۡعَل لَّهُۥ مَخۡرَجࣰا

THE TWENTY-SEVENTH NIGHT IS HIGHLY PROBABLE TO BE LAYLATUL-QADR.

Ibn 'Umar (may ALLĀH be pleased with them) said: 'The companions of the Prophet ﷺ used to tell him their dreams that (Laylatul-Qadr) was on the 27th of the month of Ramadān.'

The Prophet ﷺ said, "I see that your dreams agree on the last ten nights of Ramadān and so whoever is in search of it should seek it in the last ten nights of Ramadān."

{al-Bukhari #1156}

Imām al-Albānī (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said:

"It is on the twenty-seventh night of Ramadān according to the strongest opinion. A majority of the ahādīth comply with this, including the hadīth of Zurr Ibn Hubaysh who said:

"I heard Ubay Bin Ka’ab (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) say when it was said to him that ‘Abdullāh Ibn Mas’ood (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) said: "Whoever performs the night prayer (every night) throughout the year will achieve the Night of Al-Qadr."

He (Ubay Bin Ka’ab) said: "May ALLĀH have mercy on him, his intention was that the people not (grow lazy) and depend solely (on just one night). By the One of whom there is no deity worthy of worship beside HIM, it is indeed in Ramadān. And by ALLĀH I know on which night it is. It is on the night that ALLĀH’s Messenger ﷺ commanded us to perform the Night Prayer. It is on the twenty-seventh night. Its sign is that the sun rises on its following morning bright with no rays."

{Muslim #762}

In one report this is raised to being a saying of the Prophet ﷺ.

{Sahih Abī Dawūd #1378}

📚Qiyām Ramadān  || Page 18-19

Shaikhul-Islām Ibn Taimiyyah (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said:

"...And it occurs more frequently in the last seven; and it occurs most frequently on the twenty-seventh, just as Ubayy ibn Kab used to swear an oath that it was the twenty-seventh night. So it was said to him: "How have you come to know that?" So he replied: "On account of the sign which ALLĀH's Messenger ﷺ informed us of. He informed us that the sun rises on the morning following it being like a brass dish, having no rays."

{Muslim #762}

"So this sign which Ubayy ibn Kab reported from the Prophet ﷺ is from the most well known signs occurring in hadeeth; and it is related regarding its signs that it is a night that is "bright, shining"; and it is calm; it is not very hot, nor very cold. It may occur that ALLĀH reveals it to some of the people in a dream, or whilst awake, such that he sees its light, or he sees one who says to him: "This is Laylatul-Qadr"; or he may open his heart to witnessing such things that make the affair clear to him, and ALLĀH -the Most High- knows best."

📚 Majmoo`ul-Fatāwā || 25/284-286

Translation: Abū Talhah Daawūd ibn Ronald Burbank (may ALLĀH have mercy on him)

As the end of Ramadān approaches, this night gives us the valuable opportunity to redeem ourselves through prayer, reflection, seeking pardon and forgiveness, and increased worship. Our master Muhammad ﷺ was born in Makkah on Monday, the twelfth of Rabi' al-Awwal. He was the son of Abdullāh and Aminah al-Qurashiyyah. He is the last of the prophets and the messenger of ALLĀH, sent to all people to call them to worship ALLĀH alone and not associate anything with HIM. His father had passed away before his birth and was buried in Madinah, so he was raised by his mother. He ﷺ was breastfed after his mother by Thuwaybah al-Aslamiyyah, then Halimah al-Sa'diyyah. When he was six years old, his mother passed away, and he was taken care of by his foster mother, Umm Ayman. Thereafter, his grandfather took care of him. When he was eight years old, his grandfather passed away, so his uncle Abu Talib took care of him.

At the age of nine, he travelled with his uncle Abu Talib to Syria, where Bahīrā the monk recognized him. At the age of twenty-five, he travelled in trade for Sayyidah Khadijah, and two months after his return, he married her when she was forty years old.

At the age of thirty-five, he participated with the Quraysh in rebuilding the Kaaba and arbitrated among them in placing the Black Stone in its place. He became well-known among his people for his praiseworthy qualities, and they loved and respected him, so they called him "Al-Amīn" (the trustworthy one). ALLĀH protected him from the deeds of ignorance, and he preferred solitude as he approached forty years old. He used to worship in the cave of Hira, following the religion of his grandfather Ibrahim.

RAMADĀN IS SET TO MOVE ON!

Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said:

"O Servants of ALLĀH! Ramadān is set to move on, and only a little of it remains. If anyone has done well during the month thus far, it is incumbent on him to complete the month in a good fashion. While anyone who has fallen short let him finish in good shape. Only a few days and nights remain, so bid it farewell with righteous actions that will testify for you before the All-Knowing King. See it off by parting with it with the purest greeting of peace."

NOTES:

- Reflect on your actions, seek forgiveness, and renew your commitment to ALLĀH.

- Dedicate more time to prayer, including voluntary prayers, and engage in frequent remembrance of ALLĀH.

- Deeds are judged by their endings; never lose hope in ALLĀH even if you have not taken advantage of the past days.

- Recognize and appreciate past good deeds but avoid complacency. Aim for excellence consistently throughout Ramadān.

- Work towards the ultimate goal of Paradise, rather than just focusing on ending the month of Ramadān.

There is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except HIM. HE gives life and causes death. ˹HE is˺ your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers.

{Ad-Dukhān: Verse 1-8}

THE WISDOM BEHIND NOT KNOWING WHICH EXACT NIGHT LAYLATUL-QADR FALLS UPON

Ibn Qudāmah Al-Maqdisī (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said:

"Some of the people of knowledge said:
ALLĀH The Most High made this night unapparent (obscure) upon the Ummah in order that they should strive hard in seeking after it; and that they should find aspiration in worship when seeking to attain it.

Just as HE made the hour in which the supplication is answered on a Friday as unapparent – in order that they should be plentiful in making supplication throughout the day.

Just as HE has made HIS Greatest Name unapparent from amongst HIS Names; and HIS Pleasure in varying forms of obedience – in order that they should strive hard in all of them.

Likewise HE has made death and the establishment of The Hour as unapparent – in order that the people should earnestly endeavor in performing actions – out of caution from them both."

{Al-Mughnī, 3/117}
