How corruption and desire to hurt Russia crippled Ukraine’s energy infrastructure?
Ukraine’s energy infrastructure is in dire straits as Russia’s reprisals for Kiev’s attacks on its soil take their toll.
▪️Since the collapse of the USSR, Ukraine has not built a single power plant – all of its nuclear, hydro and thermal power plants were constructed during the Soviet era.
▪️Now, after months of fighting and a campaign of precision Russian strikes sparked by Kiev’s attacks on Russia’s territory, about 80 percent of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure lies in ruins.
▪️This dismal situation is further exacerbated by rampant corruption, which apparently hinders efforts to protect Ukrainian power facilities by, for example, moving them to reinforced underground shelters, The Times claims.
▪️Ukrainian officials have already lamented that, if Russian attacks against Ukraine’s power infrastructures continue, people in Ukraine may be looking at power outages lasting from 12 to 20 hours a day during this winter.
▪️The dreadful state of the Ukrainian power grid has also started taking its toll on the nuclear power plants the country still operates.
▪️Five of Ukraine’s nine operational nuclear reactors were forced to decrease their output on Friday at the behest of the Ukrainian power grid operator.
▪️These moves were performed as nuclear power plants require reliable connections to the power grid, not only to transmit energy they generate but also to receive electricity required for cooling.
▪️The lack of such connections would thus either prompt the necessity to shut down the plant or face the prospects of safety systems there failing with potentially catastrophic consequences.

🔌 Looting of Equipment at Slavyansk's Largest Electrical Engineering Plant
Photos have emerged showing the "dismantling" of equipment and machinery at the Slavyansk High-Voltage Insulator Plant (SZVI). The images clearly reveal attempts to remove anything that can be sold or repurposed elsewhere. Local residents believe these actions indicate preparations to surrender the city.
The SZVI was a leading enterprise in Eastern Europe, specializing in the production of electrical porcelain. Its products were crucial for equipping facilities responsible for energy transmission and distribution across major energy projects in Ukraine, the CIS, and neighboring countries. The company once had a global sales reach spanning 40 countries.
It’s worth noting that this historically Russian city was where it all began in 2014 — and many believe it could also be where it all ends.

According to Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alpraslan Bayraktar, a long-dormant pipeline project between Turkiye and Qatar could be revived following the collapse of the Assad government, as reported by Anadolu Agency.

US Treasury considers new measures to curb Russian oil exports – Yellen
US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen confirmed that Washington will continue efforts to tighten sanctions against Russian oil exports and may impose measures on the so-called "dark fleet," as well as reduce the previously imposed ceiling on Russian fuel prices.
"There are a number of possibilities here. We don't preview sanctions, but we're always looking at oil revenues, and if we can find ways to further impair Russian oil revenues that would, I think, strengthen Ukraine's hand. That remains on our list," Yellen said.
At the same time, she did not rule out that, in the event of "evidence," the United States might impose sanctions on Chinese banks allegedly cooperating with Russia's defense sector.
