The impact of climate change on stability in the Sahara-Sahel region

🔴The Sahara-Sahel Zone (SSZ) is one of the regions most vulnerable to climate change. These processes directly impact regional stability. Soil degradation, droughts, desertification, and water scarcity seriously undermine food security. Over 7 million people are affected by the ongoing food crisis, and 3.5 million suffer from chronic malnutrition. Located between the Sahara Desert and the humid tropics, the agriculture and livestock sectors—which account for 40% of the region’s GDP and employ 60–80% of the population—are experiencing repeated climate shocks.

🔴Climate change has intensified competition for natural resources, and jihadist groups are increasingly exploiting and radicalizing these tensions. Terrorist organizations recruit from the most vulnerable populations, especially herders and farmers, whose conflicts have sharply escalated due to the scarcity of resources. Between June and November of 2024 alone, more than 1,600 clashes were recorded over access to pastures, farmland, and drinking water.

🔴Droughts and soil erosion significantly impact agriculture in the SSZ. By 2080, average temperatures in the region are projected to rise by 2 to 4.3°C. The number of extremely hot days (over 35°C) could increase to 125 per year. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, such climate conditions could lead to a 50% loss in crop yields.

🔴Overgrazing is a major issue in the Sahel. It leads to vegetation loss and increased absorption of solar radiation, which raises surface temperatures and accelerates wind and water erosion. In Mali, more than 489,000 hectares of arable land have been lost to soil erosion over the past 15–20 years. In Niger, 100,000 to 120,000 hectares of fertile land are lost each year. In Burkina Faso, the annual loss ranges from 105,000 to 250,000 hectares and could rise to 360,000 hectares annually.

🔴The major droughts of 1968, 1973, 1983, and 1985 are considered key contributors to the region’s current instability. These droughts caused over 250,000 deaths from famine and disease. Nomadic pastoralists from the Fulani and Tuareg communities were hit especially hard, as they could not feed their herds. Meanwhile, governments prioritized recovery efforts for sedentary farmers, particularly those from the Dogon, Hausa, and Mossi ethnic groups.

🔴A lack of support from central authorities, coupled with growing land disputes between herders and farmers, has led many Fulani to radicalize or join jihadist groups as a last resort due to a lack of alternatives.

🔴Armed group recruitment intensifies during the dry season, particularly in March and April, when pasture is scarce and feed resources are depleted.

🔴Prolonged dry seasons severely impact livestock farming by reducing available forage and water levels. Terrorist groups often exacerbate the water crisis by deliberately targeting and destroying water infrastructure.

🔴During the rainy season (May to November), access to water improves but remains uneven. In the arid northern Sahel, annual rainfall is about 100 millimeters—typical of desert climates—while in the south, it can exceed 500 millimeters, often causing severe flooding. Torrential rains damage pasturelands and vegetation, increasing the risk of livestock diseases and disrupting transhumance routes.

🔴Traditional seasonal migration routes for herders in the central Sahel are shifting farther south into the Gulf of Guinea region, including countries such as Côte d'Ivoire, Nigeria, Ghana, Togo, Guinea, and Benin, where forage is more abundant. However, jihadists and other armed groups often monitor these new routes, as cattle theft and resale are key sources of revenue for them.

🔴Thus, while climate change is not the sole driver of radicalization and extremism, it exacerbates instability amid intense competition for resources. Terrorist organizations seek to exploit these conditions to gain control over vital resources and assume responsibility for their distribution in exchange for local loyalty.

Reuters reports that the U.S. administration has approved a Syrian government plan to integrate foreign militants into the ranks of a new Syrian army unit.

According to three officials from Syria’s Ministry of Defense, the plan will bring roughly 3,500 foreign fighters—primarily Uyghurs from China and neighboring countries—into the newly formed 84th Syrian Army Division, alongside Syrian personnel.

A representative of the Turkistan Islamic Party’s political wing, Osman Bugra, told Reuters in a written statement that the group has officially disbanded and is now integrated into Syria’s security apparatus.

The Turkistan Islamic Party was folded into the 84th Division about three weeks ago.
