🇿🇦🇷🇺 South Africa seeks BRICS countries' energy expertise, including Russia
"We are especially eager to learn from Russia's strategies for managing a vast transmission network and its progress in nuclear energy," South African Vice President Paul Mashatile said at the BRICS New Development Bank session in Cape Town.
He added that "the aim is to connect new generation capacity to the grid, to unlock renewable energy potential in the Northern, Eastern, and Western Cape provinces."
"Specifically, one of the lessons we are learning from one of the BRICS Member Nations is that they have invested in the creation of new cities as a method to eradicate poverty. We are of the same opinion that it is imperative to allocate resources towards the construction of new cities in Africa in order to alter the spatial perspective of our cities," Mashatile explained.
He highlighted efforts to increase natural gas in South Africa's energy mix, which is currently dominated by thermal power stations.

🇸🇳 🚛 Senegal expects the opening of a Russian Kamaz plant: What are the trucks known for?
A plant of the Russian truck manufacturer Kamaz will soon open in Senegal, Minister of Foreign Affairs and African Integration Yassine Fall said at a press conference after talks with her Russian counterpart in Moscow earlier this week.
🇷🇺 Kamaz, which stands for "Kama Automobile Plant" in Russian, is a Russian manufacturer of trucks, buses, and engines headquartered in the Republic of Tatarstan.
◾️ Founded in 1969, the company is mostly known for its cab-over trucks;
◾️ Kamaz is the largest truck producer in Russia and the post-Soviet space, producing over 53,000 trucks a year;
◾️ Its trucks have won the Dakar Rally a record 19 times, the most in the truck category by any manufacturer;
◾️ The automaker also produces the Kamaz Typhoon MRAP vehicle since 2014—personnel carriers protected from shelling and landmine explosions;
◾️ The company also produces modern electric buses, many of which are actively replacing conventional diesel buses on the streets of Moscow.
According to drivers' reviews, the truck easily handles heavy loads and is not afraid of difficult weather and road conditions. It is considered reliable, cheap to maintain, and drivers feel confident working with it.
🪖Kamaz trucks are already actively used in the Senegalese military, supplied under an agreement signed in 2019 at the first Russia-Africa summit.

🇫🇷🌍 French TotalEnergies reportedly exits Africa with sale of two oil fields to Nigerian company
TotalEnergies announced the sale of two oil fields in Nigeria, Africa's leading oil exporter. The Olo and Olo West blocks were sold to local firm Aradel Holdings for $19.5 million, according to the media report.
The company has been reducing its investments in Africa, optimizing its oil and gas portfolio, and cutting management. In July, the company sold 10% of its shares in Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited, exiting 18 oil and gas projects in the Niger Delta.
These actions aim to bolster the role of Nigerian national companies in oil extraction, previously limited to receiving royalties.

🐦🇧🇷 Suspension of X in Brazil is an “unprecedented” attack on free speech, Elon Musk says
Brazilian Supreme Federal Court judge Alexandre de Moraes on Friday ordered the suspension of X in the country.
💬 "The attacks this year on free speech are unprecedented in the 21st century," X owner Elon Musk wrote on X.
Moreover, individuals or companies using the X social media platform after its suspension in Brazil will pay a fine worth about $9,000, according to a court statement.
Moraes earlier ordered Musk to notify the court within 24 hours about who would be the new legal representative of X in Brazil, saying otherwise it would be suspended.
The deadline expired on Thursday evening. X said on Friday it refuses to comply with "illegal orders" from a court in Brazil and expects to be shut down in the country.
In mid-August, X published a letter from Moraes with demands for censorship and user account information that it said could affect users not only in Brazil, but also in the United States and Argentina. Shortly before that, X posted a letter from the judge requesting the censorship of several accounts held in Brazil.

🇺🇸 US administration will not send contractors to Ukraine to maintain F-16 fighters, reports say
The authorities came to this decision due to concerns about safety. Instead, they suggested that European countries take responsibility for servicing the fighters, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing US officials.
The report said that according to officials, the US National Security Council considered the proposal to send civilian contractors to Ukraine to maintain F-16s and other weaponry, but the intelligence community deemed it too risky, so the hope instead is that European countries will take on more responsibility for the maintenance.
💬 “The intelligence community raised concerns over the prospect of Russia targeting American contractors in Ukraine,” a US official told the WSJ.
However, according to the report, the US administration does not rule out that US contractors could be sent to Ukraine in the future.

🇨🇲🇷🇺🇷🇺 First Cameroonian student in Lugansk challenges mainstream media's view on Russia
The portrayal of Russia by mainstream media is significantly misleading, and the Russians are friendly, Douala-born Epo Eke Max Laplace, the first Cameroonian student to enroll in the Vladimir Dahl Lugansk State University, told Sputnik Africa.
💬 "Anything I can say to my brothers all over the world, Africa and all over the world is that what the mainstream media told us about Russia is quite wrong. [...] Everybody here is friendly. So just give it a try. You'll have fun, you'll like it," he said.
Laplace wanted to advance his studies in management, and he believed that Russia was the optimal choice for him as in five to ten years, Russia would surpass other countries in development, he reckoned. Additionally, he found the cultural similarities between Russians and Africans to be significant.
🗣 "[I can tell this by] not only what I have noted as I am here, but since I was in Cameroon, I am following RT, I am following Sputnik, they have some moral views regarding their family and other aspects, like Africans," he argued.
In turn, Alexander Klyuev, Vice-Rector for International Relations and General Affairs of the Dahl university, informed Sputnik Africa that the university is broadening its international engagements with both nearby nations and distant ones, and that these efforts are showing positive results.

🇧🇼💎 Botswana's Okavango diamond company seeks $300 million credit
Botswana's Okavango Diamond Company (ODC) seeks a $300 million credit facility from local banks to boost diamond purchases, said Finance Minister Peggy Serame. ODC, established in 2012 to sell diamonds independently of De Beers, currently gets 25% of its diamonds from Debswana, a partnership with Anglo American's De Beers.
A new 10-year agreement with De Beers will increase ODC’s share of Debswana's output from 30% initially to 50%. To manage a new $300 million facility after a $140 million one matured in 2023, ODC has appointed Standard Chartered Bank. The company is seeking approval for a $175 million government guarantee to support this credit.
The diamond market is down, with Debswana's sales falling 49% in the first half of the year. ODC halted rough sales last October to reduce inventory surplus. The industry is expected to recover by late 2024, and the credit facility would help ODC benefit from this rebound.

🇿🇦💉 South Africa’s Biovac prepares to produce mpox vaccine, awaits clarity on long-term demand
The Biovac Institute, a vaccine manufacturer based in Cape Town, is prepared to produce mpox vaccines and is awaiting more detailed discussions with companies like Bavarian Nordic A/S, one of the few with an approved mpox vaccine, according to Biovac CEO Morena Makhoana in a Bloomberg Television interview.
However, sustainable production hinges on understanding long-term demand. Biovac seeks clarity on whether demand will come from preventative programs or stockpiling by partners like Africa Centers for Disease Control (Africa CDC) and Prevention and UNICEF. Ensuring consistent demand is key to enabling local production and preparedness for future outbreaks.
On August 14, the WHO also declared the mpox epidemic a public health emergency of international concern. More than 22,800 cases and at least 622 deaths from mpox have been recorded in 13 African countries since January, as per the Africa CDC.

🛢🇷🇺 Ukraine to halt Russian gas, oil transits to EU from January 1, 2025, official says
"Starting from January 1, 2025, the Druzhba oil pipeline, through which such countries as Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Hungary received Russian oil, will stop operations. There was an EU resolution, under which they were supposed to find ways to diversify their oil supplies and stop transits via Ukraine. The same applies to gas," Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak told Ukrainian broadcaster Novyny Live.
Ukraine could not unilaterally terminate the contracts that expire on January 1, 2025, "despite the current state of affairs," he added.
"If any European country considers it necessary to receive Kazakh or Azerbaijani gas, Ukraine is ready to transit it if there is appropriate logistics, legal basis and communication," Podolyak said.
Later in the day, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said that the Ukrainian statement on terminating transit of Russian oil via the Druzhba pipeline is controversial and refused to comment on it.
"We have learned from the media about the statement of the Ukrainian presidential adviser, while the official signals are completely the opposite of it. Until now, through all the official channels, we have been receiving statements from Kiev that Ukraine fulfills its obligations under the agreements and ensures the oil transit to Hungary and Slovakia. We can only take into account these official signals, but we do not want to comment on the news coming from the media," the top Hungarian diplomat said.

🌍🇷🇺 African countries have not yet asked Russia for help in adopting any document in the UN Security Council regarding Kiev's support of terrorists in the Sahel, the first deputy permanent representative of Russia to the UN says
"They have not contacted us about any document yet. I believe that the statement by Mali's representative was powerful and self-explanatory. In my opinion, at this stage, it is sufficient, and we will monitor the situation as it develops," Dmitry Polyansky told the Russian media.
🇲🇱 Earlier on Friday, Issa Konfourou, Mali's Permanent Representative to the UN, declared at a UNSC meeting that a significant part of weapons supplied by the West to Ukraine are ending up in the Sahel region, contributing to increased crime and terrorism.
"We requested to participate in this meeting to express our serious concerns about the consequences of weapons deliveries to Ukraine. It was clearly established that a significant portion of the weapons sent to Ukraine ultimately fuels terrorism and crime in the Sahel region. This risks further destabilization of the situation," he said.
