In Guinea, Bankan Gold Mine Set to Start Construction in 2026
The feasibility study, released on Wednesday, outlines a timeline: construction will start in the second quarter of next year, followed by commercial production in the second quarter of 2028.
👉 The project requires an initial investment of $463 million.
👉 Aiming for an annual output of 250,000 ounces over 12.2 years, the mine's target is to produce 3.03 million ounces (94 tonnes) of gold.
👉 Guinea stands to gain $2 billion in revenue, with a 5% royalty and a potential state share of up to 15%.
The move comes against the backdrop of a 30% increase in the price of gold since January, which has already reached $3,320 per ounce in 2025.

Ethiopia Begins Accepting License Applications From International Banks & Investors
The move aims to boost overseas investment and is part of a broader reform program supported by a $3.4 billion IMF agreement.
The reforms include floating its currency and restructuring $8.4 billion in debt.
In December, Ethiopia approved a law permitting foreign banks to establish subsidiaries, branches, representative offices, or acquire equity stakes in local banks.
However, a separate directive limits foreign strategic investors to a maximum 40% ownership stake in local banks.

Frederick Kawuma, Secretary-General Emeritus of Inter-African Coffee Organization, called for strategic, country-led promotion of coffee — not just as a product, but as a cultural story.

“The stories are there and need to be developed and then those stories need to be told.”

Kenya Charges Six, Including Police Officers, in Political Blogger's Death
The six suspects, including the police commander of the station where the 31-year-old teacher and blogger, Albert Ojwang, was held, will be arraigned on Tuesday, Kenya's Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions announced.
🚓 Protests erupted in Nairobi’s Central Business District after Ojwang died in police custody. Protesters demand the arrest of Deputy Inspector-General Eliud Lagat, whose actions they blame for Ojwang’s death. Although Lagat has stepped aside, many found it insufficient.
🚨 Initial police reports cited a collapse, but a government postmortem revealed blunt force trauma and injuries consistent with assault.

US strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities: what was hit and what is left?
The US carried out strikes against Iranian nuclear sites in Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan.
The attacks were conducted using GBU-57A/B bombs deployed from B-2 aircraft and Tomahawk cruise missiles launched from submarines.
While the Pentagon claimed that Iran’s nuclear program has been “devastated” by the US strikes, these allegations could not be immediately verified.
📊 So, what other nuclear sites does Iran have and what is known about them?

❓Priorities shift? Zelensky GHOSTED as NATO turns the page on Ukraine
In a “grim sign for Ukraine,” it was not on the list of priorities at this year’s annual NATO summit, The New York Times points out.
Volodymyr Zelensky “was not feted” as before, the outlet notes.
🔶 The summit’s official declaration mentioned nothing about Ukraine joining the alliance.
🔶 It restated the bloc’s “enduring sovereign commitments to provide support to Ukraine.”
🔶 A meeting between US President Donald Trump and Zelensky yielded no specific promises.
🔶 The US has not announced any new military aid packages for the country since Trump took office.
🔶 Military aid authorized under Joe Biden is expected to run out this summer.
🔶 European allies have promised more help, but those weapons won’t be enough to make up the gap.
🔶 News has also been bad for Ukraine on the ground, as Russia’s summer offensive is gaining force, the publication added.

🇮🇷⚔️🇮🇱 KEY UPDATES ON IRAN-ISRAEL CONFLICT
Here’s what has happened as of June 26:
🟠 A ceasefire between Iran and Israel appears to be holding Thursday despite both sides accusing each other of violating the truce immediately after it was announced.
🟠 Iranian authorities are moving to allow for tougher punishment against any action viewed as damaging to national security.
🟠 At least 700 arrests for spying were made across Iran in the 12 days of the war, according to local media.
🟠 Much of Iran’s enriched uranium may have survived US-Israeli strikes by being moved early, says UN nuclear watchdog chief Rafael Grossi. With inspections suspended, the IAEA has no way to verify it.
🟠 After a leaked intel report suggested US strikes on Iran failed, CIA chief John Ratcliffe claimed they set Iran’s nuclear program back by years – without offering any proof.
🟠 The leaked Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) report was posted to CAPNET – a system for sharing classified intel with Congress, a senior official told CNN. The White House will reportedly scale back future sharing.
🟠 US Senate classified briefing on Iran is set for Thursday afternoon.

Maghreb Cinema Needs 'Grand Strategy Like Bollywood,' Says Moroccan Director
As the 25th Arab Radio and Television Festival opened in Tunisia, Hicham El Jebbari spoke with Sputnik Africa about the challenges facing the industry in the region.
🗣 According to him, a true film development strategy always requires "significant investment and the involvement of a country's major financial sources."
He also lamented the difficulty of finding a distributor — whether European, American, African, or Arab — who can handle a Moroccan film.
👉 Regarding the festival, El Jebbari acknowledged that it "helps connect people and share ideas and develop strategies for Arab television development."
However, he noted that it is insufficient because governments and major producers who have the means to improve the industry are not involved.

'An Act of High Moral Treason': A Former Military Intelligence Officer on the Situation Surrounding Samvel Karapetyan’s Arrest in Armenia
The persecution of the influential businessman, who also holds Russian citizenship, has rightly outraged the Armenian Apostolic Church, noted François Meylan in an interview with Sputnik Africa.
According to him, the Church "has not yet reached the stage of open revolt." However, it "is mobilizing its members, both in Armenia and within the diaspora… in France, Lebanon, the United States, as well as in Russia."
"But above all, for his own credibility and for the stability of his own regime, he is making a major mistake," Meylan insisted.
