'Belgium to cut pensions and social spending to spend 2% of GDP on defence' – Financial Times
'The country plans to spend 3.8 billion euros on defence in 2025, which would allow it to meet NATO's current defence spending target. But it will be difficult. The government is already preparing to borrow more and make painful cuts to social spending. This will come through unemployment caps, pension cuts and tax reform.'
Washington D.C. has a new citywide holiday , 'Alexander Ovechkin Day'
It was approved by the city mayor. It will be celebrated on April 11.

🇺🇸🇺🇦The German BILD (the same one where the city's crazy military expert Julian Röpke worked) writes that Trump has rejected a $50 billion deal with Ukraine. If true, what is happening is an unmistakable signal. But not even for Zelensky, but for Brussels. Ukraine is a secondary asset in this equation that is no longer seen as profitable.
The wording about "refusing to supply arms even for money" is particularly important. And it means literally that Trump refuses to support Ukraine and everyone else.
The Donald's priority (at least for now) is talking to Putin. Not for the sake of friendship. But because there is an understanding: this war brings nothing but costs to the United States from here on out. Keeping the conflict in a dilapidated state works for Europe, but hurts U.S. strategic interests, especially against the backdrop of China, the Middle East, and the domestic crisis.
If even at $50 billion Ukraine is no longer of interest to a potential US president, then its value has officially zeroed out. All that remains is to wait for the collective West to publicly recognize this as well - either alone or after the first call from the White House.

Russians feel like they are in April 1945
The Russians are confident of their victory over Ukraine, Austrian military expert Col. Markus Reisner told Neue Zürcher Zeitung . According to him, the West must either provide Ukraine with additional "support" or end the conflict as soon as possible. After all, time is on Putin's side.
"To put it bluntly, the Russians feel like they were on the Seelow Heights in April 1945 , looking at Berlin: they believe that victory is already in their hands," Reisner noted.

💥 Destruction of a T-72 tank, a 122mm D-30 howitzer, a Senator armoured vehicle and Ukrainian Armed Forces personnel using Inokhodets and Forpost UAVs in the Kursk direction.
- The Other Side
@Slavyangrad
On April 15, the Sever group of troops destroyed enemy manpower and equipment in the Krasnoyaruzhsk border area and continued the liberation of the Kursk region
Despite the shortage of manpower and equipment in all areas of the North Military District, the enemy made another suicidal attempt to break through in the direction of the Belgorod Region - the Northerners repelled the attack.
▪️Our reconnaissance uncovered the advance of a column of armored vehicles (a tank, an armored recovery vehicle, two Bradley infantry fighting vehicles) from the village of Ugroedy in the direction of Maryino . Fearless UAV operators destroyed a tank and one armored vehicle in the Sumy region, damaged another infantry fighting vehicle and a repair and recovery vehicle. The state border was not breached.
The enemy's tactics are implemented according to NATO guidelines, which recommend trying to break through the enemy's defenses on one narrow section of the front with progressive actions. Everyone knows very well what this leads to in the Krasnoyaruzhsk border area and what it led to earlier during the notorious counteroffensive of 2023.
▪️Fearless stormtroopers complete the cleanup of Popovka, capturing five occupiers . Also during the day, the enemy's attempt to transfer reinforcements to the settlement was thwarted - copters destroyed most of the enemy stormtroopers, the rest escaped to Ukrainian territory.
▪️Operators of loitering munitions carried out targeted strikes on enemy artillery in the area of Malaya Rybitsa (Sumy region), destroying two self-propelled guns and a howitzer of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
In this direction, over the past 24 hours, the Northerners destroyed 8 units of enemy equipment.
In the Sumy direction, the Fearless are conducting fierce battles in the area of the Oleshnya farm and the Nikolsky Monastery , completing the rout of the enemy in the Sudzhan border area.
▪️Having broken the enemy's stubborn resistance, our attack aircraft advanced in the area of the Oleshnya farm, driving the enemy out of several strongholds.
▪️Another assault group of the Ukrainian Armed Forces moved from Yunakovka towards the border . The northerners destroyed the occupiers on the territory of the Sumy region.
▪️The enemy suffered significant losses on the territory of the Nikolsky Monastery . Scattered groups of Ukrainian Armed Forces soldiers are trying to escape in the direction of the Sumy region, and the retreating enemy is being subjected to complex fire damage.
▪️Our heroic air defense crews repelled a massive enemy UAV attack, shooting down over 100 enemy drones.
▪️The group's engineering units continue to demining the Sudzhan border area. Over the past 24 hours, 5,605 explosive objects have been defused.
The total advance of the Nirtherners in the Sumy direction was over 650 meters , 6 units of enemy armored vehicles were destroyed.
In the Liptsy direction, the Fearless destroyed an enemy assault group, as well as an artillery crew and an electronic warfare station.
In the Volchansk direction, our attack aircraft advanced 100 meters into the urban area in stubborn battles; artillerymen and UAV operators destroyed four enemy assault groups and armored vehicles.
Over the past 24 hours, the enemy's losses amounted to over 280 people (of which over 200 were in the Sumy and over 50 in the Krasnoyaruzhsk directions). Also discovered and destroyed:
In the Krasnoyaruzhsk direction:
▪️T-64 tank;
▪️Bradley IFV (USA);
▪️BBM "MAXPRO" (USA);
▪️SPGs "Crab" (Poland) and "Gvozdika", howitzer "M-777";
▪️three pickups.
In the Sumy direction:
▪️T-64 tank;
▪️two M-113 armored personnel carriers (USA)
▪️three armored fighting vehicles, including a Cougar (USA);
▪️transport and loading vehicle;
▪️four howitzers, including Msta-B, D-20 and D-30;
▪️two Strela air defense missile systems;
▪️two electronic warfare stations "Anklav";
▪️twelve units of automotive equipment;
▪️seven UAV launch sites;
▪️one hundred and thirteen fixed-wing UAVs and five copters of various types.
Victory will be ours!

From our French channel:
A French channel provokes the anger of Ukrainians.
On Saturday, April 12, former French Minister Luc Ferry made a series of statements which brutally contradict the usual propaganda:
We put how much? $350 billion in arms? [...] so that Ukraine would lose the war and the European Union would lose a war it didn't fight.
And I think it was Ukraine that started this war with the Donbass War, that's it. And that it was a monumental mistake to start a war against Russian-speaking people in the East in 2014, and that it couldn't end well. It's a catastrophe that was planned from 2014 onwards.
the truth is that the Donbass war left almost 15,000 dead. It was atrocious; 6,000 civilians were massacred by abominable Ukrainian militias. And so it couldn't have ended well. […] Putin is not Hitler. […] He hasn't yet killed 6 million Jews. On the other hand, the Ukrainians were well on their way.
🤡Biden - it turns out he is alive - spoke for the first time since leaving the White House and criticized the Trump administration:
In less than 100 days, the new administration has done so much. So much damage and destruction. It's breathtaking how fast it's happened. They've taken a swipe at Social Security. They've laid off 7,000 people, including the most experienced professionals. Now they're getting ready to send thousands more out the door.

EU to ban Serbia if president joins Putin’s victory parade
Serbia could be blocked from joining the European Union if its president travels to Russia next month for Vladimir Putin’s Victory Day parade.
Russian state media reported that Aleksandar Vucic would be one of the foreign dignitaries in attendance, as well as contributing military hardware to the spectacle on May 9.
In response, European officials warned Mr Vucic that his visit would be a breach of the bloc’s membership criteria and would derail his country’s EU ambitions.
“We need to ensure that they understand that certain decisions come at a cost,” said Jonatan Vseviov, the secretary-general of Estonia’s ministry of foreign affairs. “The consequence is them not joining the European Union.”
He added: “Russians have been working hard to get people to attend . . . For us this will be an important litmus test. Basically what we look at is whether or not they are on our side or playing on the other team.”
Kaja Kallas, the bloc’s top foreign diplomat, said EU foreign ministers had discussed prospective member states attending the ceremony in Moscow, at a gathering on Monday.
“What was also discussed very clearly, and said by different member states, is that any participation in the May 9 parades or celebrations in Moscow will not be taken lightly on the European side, considering that Russia is really waging a full-scale war in Europe,” she told reporters after the meeting.
Talks on Serbia’s accession have stalled in recent years because of its apparent support for Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine.
Belgrade has refused to adopt Western sanctions against Russia in response to the war, which a majority of EU member states demand as a criterion of membership.
Russia owns Serbia’s only oil refiner and is refusing to sell, leaving the Western Balkan state reliant on Moscow for economic stability.
Baltic’s get a little taste of power and believe they are zee new Reichsmarshall of EU, but they are still nobodies.

🇺🇸🇷🇺🤔 Trump’s War Cabinet Fractures Over Moscow: The Battle Behind the Peace Table
Inside the White House, the knives are out, not for war, but for peace.
As Washington postures and backchannels its way through the endgame in Ukraine, a brutal internal rift is erupting in Trump’s inner circle. On one side: Secretary of State Marco Rubio and warhawk Keith Kellogg, foaming with Cold War delusions and NATO-worship. On the other: Steve Witkoff, Trump’s special envoy, fresh off a nearly five-hour meeting with Vladimir Putin, and sounding increasingly convinced that peace is possible.
The Wall Street Journal, that bastion of Wall Street orthodoxy, tried to spin the tension as a division over “how much to trust Russia.” But the truth runs deeper: it’s a fight over whether Washington will finally admit it has lost — militarily, diplomatically, and morally, or whether it will die on the altar of its own exceptionalist delusion.
Trump, to his credit, is siding with Witkoff, the first American envoy in decades who isn’t allergic to dialogue. That’s right: after two rounds of face-to-face talks with Putin, Witkoff says the process is “on the verge” of a breakthrough. He even dared to challenge the manufactured hysteria over the recent Sumy strike, calling it a “mistake”, a stark contrast to Rubio’s virtue-signaling outrage and Kellogg’s melodrama about “crossing the line of decency.”
But Moscow wasn’t unclear: the strike hit a command meeting of the Seversk group, Ukrainian officers and their Western “advisers”, hiding behind civilians in Sumy like NATO-backed human shields. The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed over 60 military personnel killed. Putin’s message? You can’t hide war-planners behind civilians and expect immunity.
Meanwhile, Zelensky, clutching his sweaty khaki like a talisman, ranted to CBS News that “Russian narratives are winning in the US.” Translation: America is finally waking up to the war it’s bankrolled, and Zelensky is losing the information war he once monopolized.
Russian FM Lavrov, in typical deadpan fashion, observed what’s painfully obvious: Ukraine’s violations of the U.S.-brokered truce, including Kursk region strikes, prove Kiev has no interest in any deal that doesn’t involve more blood and more foreign weapons.
Kremlin negotiator Kirill Dmitriev nailed it: “We see attempts to misinterpret Russian messages, mischaracterize Russia and its leaders… direct dialogue is the best way to defeat this disinformation.” Spoken like a man who’s seen the Western script before and tossed it back across the table.
And the split is only getting wider. Witkoff’s proposal, recognizing Russia’s control over its reclaimed historical territories in Lugansk, Donetsk, Zaporozhye, and Kherson, is the only adult suggestion in the room. Predictably, the usual neocons and Think Tank zombies screamed betrayal. But here’s the truth: those regions voted, they speak Russian, they bled for their reunification. Kiev lost them the minute it chose NATO over neutrality.
The real irony? As Witkoff tries to build a framework for de-escalation, it’s Rubio and Kellogg, not Russia, who are sabotaging peace. It’s the hawks who won’t accept a post-unipolar world. And it’s the dying Atlanticist elite who fear one thing more than Russian missiles: a negotiated settlement that exposes the West’s defeat.
This is why the Sumy strike was more than military. It was symbolic. A surgical reminder that Moscow’s patience has limits and that the age of U.S. impunity is over.
Trump’s move now will define whether he truly breaks with the regime-change swamp or folds under pressure. The U.S. has a choice: keep arming a failed proxy regime that is conscripting women and luring teenagers with cash, or let Witkoff and Putin finish what diplomacy started.
One thing is certain: the “Russian narrative” Zelensky fears is simply the truth, and it’s gaining traction not because of propaganda, but because Washington is running out of lies.

From fighter planes to nuclear reactor rods and smartphones, rare earth minerals are vital to a wide array of products. As geopolitical and trade tensions rise, China’s dominance of both mining and processing means these niche metals have become a cudgel to use against opponents.
In response to punitive tariffs imposed by Washington, Beijing earlier this month added seven rare earths to its export control list. While the metals actually occur fairly commonly in the Earth’s crust, they are not frequently found in concentrated deposits. They can also require a multistep process to isolate individual elements — and China controls not only mining, but the vast majority of global refining capacity.
Terbium
This soft, silvery metal can be found in light bulbs, while it also enables the vibrant colors on smartphone screens, according to the Royal Society of Chemistry. Terbium adds temperature resiliency to magnets used in aircraft, submarines and missiles. It’s “one of the hardest elements to source,” as it makes up less than 1% of the total rare earth content in most deposits, the US Department of Defense has said.
China exports as much as 85% of its terbium to Japan, while other destinations include South Korea and the US, which takes around 5%.
Yttrium
Yttrium is used to treat liver cancer, and in the production of lasers for dental and medical surgeries. It also increases the strength of alloys, and its resistance to heat and shocks means its ideal for high-temperature superconductors.
Dysprosium
Resistant to high temperatures, dysprosium is mainly used in alloys for magnets deployed in motors or generators. It’s particularly important for the clean-energy transition as the magnets are used in wind turbines and electrical vehicles. A form of dysprosium can also be used in nuclear reactor control rods as it readily absorbs neutrons.
Gadolinium
If you ever had an MRI scan, you may well have received an injection of a gadolinium-based dye, which reacts with magnetic forces to improve visibility of the body’s organs in medical imaging.
Gadolinium is also effective in enhancing the performance of alloys. Adding small amounts of the mineral can improve the resistance to high temperatures and oxidation, helpful for metals used to make magnets, electronic components and data storage disks.
Its neutron-absorbing capability also makes it an ingredient for the core of nuclear reactors.
Lutetium
This is a hard and dense metal, unlike most of the rest of the elements being targeted.
Lutetium is used a chemical catalyst fluid in oil refiners.
Scandium
Baseball bats and bicycle frames may contain traces of scandium. Given its low density and high melting point, the metal is also used to make components for fighter planes. Its radioactive properties also makes it ideal as a tracer in oil refining, or in underground pipes for detecting leaks.
Off the List: Neodymium, Praseodymium
Neodymium and praseodymium are not being targeted in this round of trade salvos. These two metals, however, are by far the most common rare-earth elements because of their important roles in making permanent magnet motors.

🇺🇸🇺🇦🇪🇺The US has reduced its demands for compensation from Ukraine for the aid provided to $100 billion, Bloomberg.
Will it be easier for Ukraine, with debts of $100 billion? The money is not small, plus very soon, an American court will recognize this as a debt. After which the entire financial system of the USA will begin to work on its collection.
After all, Trump is leading to this. It is for this same reason that the EU is disrupting the allocation of money to Ukraine. So that the US does not take it away.
This is the kind of swing that the US and Europe have.
@Slavyangrad
China’s economy grew a robust 5.4 per cent in the first quarter of this year as producers frontloaded exports to beat a blitz of tariffs from Donald Trump that threatens to decouple the world’s two largest economies.
The official GDP figures, released by China’s National Bureau of Statistics on Wednesday, matched the year-on-year growth rate in the fourth quarter despite Trump’s first salvo of additional 20 per cent tariffs taking effect.
The strong first-quarter growth exceeded Beijing’s full-year target for 2025 as well as the 5.1 per cent forecast by analysts in a Reuters poll.
But economists expect China’s economy to come under pressure as the full US levies take force.
The economy had a “good start” in the first quarter, said NBS deputy commissioner Sheng Laiyun.
But he warned that “the current external environment is becoming increasingly complex and severe, the driving force for domestic effective demand growth is insufficient and the foundation for the economy to continue its rebound and improvement still needs to be solidified”.
Beijing has set what analysts have described as an ambitious growth target of 5 per cent for this year, which policymakers have pledged to back with stimulus measures, funded by a record budget deficit target for the central government.
But economists have downgraded their forecasts in the wake of Trump’s trade war, with Morgan Stanley cutting its estimate for China’s 2025 GDP growth from 4.5 per cent to 4.2 per cent for this year. UBS projects the economy will grow just 3.4 per cent, and Goldman Sachs forecasts 4 per cent growth.
Sure China doomers are still telling people that China will collapse in 2025. 😂

🇺🇸🇺🇦 US continues to insist on "tough" terms of the subsoil deal with Ukraine — Bloomberg
- The essence of the agreement has not changed, the US still views the deal as an opportunity to return the aid already provided to Ukraine.
- Nevertheless, Washington reduced the amount of its demands on Ukraine from $300 billion to $100 billion.
- In addition, the Trump administration "continues to avoid commitments on future investments in the fund - a key interest of Kiev - and has postponed the issue for further discussion."
- "Instead, Washington insists that all US wartime spending on Ukraine be counted as its contribution to the fund. Ukrainian negotiators have been unable to convince the American side to abandon this approach," the publication writes.

"Trump's Ukraine ceasefire agreement is slipping away": The Economist shames Trump - no new aid for Kiev, no pressure on Russia.
"Poland's foreign minister, Sikorski, said the Trump team should realize that the Kremlin was bullying their goodwill. However, Trump seems to have no sense of shame. He has shown particular condescension toward Russia and hostility toward Ukraine.
Although some of his aides condemned the Russian attack on Sumy, Trump suggested it was a mistake, albeit a terrible one. Surprisingly, on April 14, he blamed Ukraine for the invasion by Russia, ignoring Ukraine's request to buy U.S. missiles.
Notably absent from Trump's remarks is any mention of additional military aid to Ukraine. Indeed, American support is dwindling.
The arms flow approved by Biden will end in the coming months, and Trump has not authorized anything else. Another budget allocation to support Ukraine looks unlikely.
Diplomats in Washington also report that some Trump aides privately say they are fed up with European efforts to strengthen Ukraine. As always with such a chaotic administration, it is difficult to distinguish the true signal from the noise."

- Russian troops continue to develop the offensive in the Konstantinovsky direction (between Pokrovsk and Toretsk, southwest of the latter), where the front has stood for a long time.
- Our armored groups have practically taken control of Valentinovka and have begun to storm Sukhaya Balka, which follows it.
- This is also acknowledged by the enemy's resources: "Russian troops have occupied the northern part of Valentinovka and continue to storm Sukhaya Balka," they write.
- To the west of the settlement of Sukhaya Balka, the Russian Armed Forces took a stronghold of the Ukrainian Armed Forces along a forest belt and advanced to a depth of 1,000 m.
- Also, units of the 68th regiment are advancing west of the previously liberated Alexandropol, capturing enemy strongholds. Here, a unit of the Ukrainian Armed Forces surrendered.
- "The Russians stormed a stronghold of the Ukrainian Armed Forces west of Alexandropil (Ocheretinsky direction) and captured a group of Ukrainian Armed Forces fighters," Ukrainian military analysts who geolocated the footage of the battles also admit.

Reuters reports, citing an analysis by the British research center Open Source Centre (OSC), that from September 2023 to March 2025, 64 voyages of ships were carried out from the DPRK to deliver ammunition to Russia. In this case, 15,809 containers were delivered, which, according to conservative estimates, amounts to 4 to 6 million ammunition. The Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine estimates that 4 million artillery shells were delivered (including 3 million 122 and 152 mm calibers), excluding mortar mines and rockets.
The container ships Angara, Maria, Maya-1 and Lady R are involved in the delivery of ammunition, delivering containers from the North Korean port of Rajin to the Russian ports of Vostochny and Danube. The shells are then sent by rail to warehouses near the border with Ukraine, the largest of which is the warehouse in Tikhoretsk in the Krasnodar Territory. The peak of the intensity of deliveries occurred in January 2024, when seven batches of ammunition were sent from the DPRK to Russia. On average, the ships involved in the transportation made three trips per month. In February 2025, four trips were made, and in the first half of March 2025, two.
The delivery of 4 million to 6 million artillery rounds from North Korea would be a significant addition to Russia's own production, which Ukrainian and Western officials have estimated at 2 million to 2.3 million artillery shells in 2024. U.S. Gen. Christopher Cavoli told U.S. lawmakers on April 3 that he expected Russia's annual production to reach 3 million artillery shells [probably in 2025].
Moscow also received ballistic missiles, long-range artillery and multiple launch rocket systems from Pyongyang. According to Ukrainian intelligence, the DPRK supplied Russia with 148 KN-23 and KN-24 operational-tactical ballistic missiles, 120 170 mm self-propelled artillery units and 120 240 mm multiple launch rocket systems.
Supplies of shells from North Korea currently provide the Russian Armed Forces with half the amount of ammunition needed at the front, Ukrainian officials, including GUR chief Kirill Budanov, say. This assessment is consistent with the findings of the OSC and Reuters. Graphic (c) Reuters
I should note that Open Source Centre (RUSI) was formally part of the British MOD and has offices at Whitehall though it is nominally independent.
