"If you think about League of Nations after WW1. It didn't work then, because there was a war. After WW2 we had the UN, so there wouldn't be wars. And now here we are - a lot of wars going on."

Ms Kallas' famed history reading list is really making her dangerously smart.

• Margarita Simonyan

Kallas is a symbol of hope for all retards in the EU. Having no skills, knowledge, or accomplishments can never stop you from getting to the very top of EU politics.

If Kallas is considered the most capable and smartest of Estonians, man I really want to know how the country functions. Like is everyones job in Estonia basically to be Walmart greeters.

Slavyanlibrary 13.02.26 Entry 4.

On Killing, Why They Kill, Achilles in Vietnam.

Been a while, so here’s three to make up for it.

Dave Grossman, Richard Rhodes, Jonathan Shay.

Page Count: 366/384/272.

ISBN: 97801316330114 | 9780375702488 | 9780684813219.

——-

These books all run in very much the same circle - combat, combat trauma, and combat psyche. Or perhaps more accurately, the psychology of violence. The first two I recommend as mandatory reading for anyone who wishes to understand this war, any war, or has ever been in war.
They are mindblowing books in that, if one has been in combat, trigger an effect of, "Yes, I've felt that before. Yes, I know what that is. Yes, I feel this now," until finally there is an epiphany of, "Oh God, this is starting to make sense now!"

Any veteran, combat or not, should consider those first two mandatory reading. It helped me, I promise it will help you.

As for civilians, also mandatory reading if you have fallen victim to violence or worse, serial violence. These books have helped me, I believe they will help you - because it's like figuring out how a magic trick works.

The third book - Achilles...I do not recommend as a, "must-read", but it is still a very interesting observation and linked in this field of study (these books reference each other) - worth picking up for cheap or or a digital copy on your down time.
The author has a very interesting premise and a great many points to make, but unfortunately repeats himself very often to the point that a shy of 300 page book frankly could have been a shy of 200 page book.
That said, if I consider the above two to be mandatory reading, this one easily falls onto an, "8/10" on my personal scale of, "should read" whether well written or not.

————-

If you have no time or energy or money to read them anytime soon, here are my personal takeaways from these three to share with you.

-Violence always creates mutual damage.
-Violence is not to be treated lightly. }
-There is a reason we do not bomb civilians.
-There is a reason we do not massacre civilians.
-There is a reason the Russian armed forces conduct themselves as they do.

(A personal post-script: concealed behind every smile is a dagger.)

‼️🇵🇱🇺🇦 Poland has amnestied citizens for participating in the war in Ukraine, — Polskie Radio 24

▪️The country's Sejm has passed a law that exempts Poles fighting on the side of Ukraine from criminal liability.

▪️Previously, Polish legislation prohibited citizens from participating in armed conflicts abroad — the violation carried a sentence of up to 5 years in prison.

▪️Now, the amnesty also applies to those who have already been convicted for serving in the ranks of the Ukrainian army.

▪️The decision underscores Warsaw's support for Ukraine in the face of the ongoing war with Russia.

The pace of building up the strike capabilities of the US Navy grouping off the coast of Iran continues. Over the past few days, information has emerged about preparations for the transfer of two more aircraft carrier strike groups, led by nuclear aircraft carriers USS George H. W. Bush (CVN-77) and USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78), to the Middle East region. The CVN-77 aircraft carrier was spotted two days earlier 150 km southeast of Jacksonville and was heading towards the Bermuda Islands and then on to Europe.

Thus, the total number of multifunctional deck-based fighters F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and F-35C, as well as electronic warfare aircraft EA-18G Growler in the air wings preparing for the operation could reach 150-160 units, not counting long-range radar detection and control aircraft E-2D Advanced Hawkeye and multi-purpose helicopters. The grouping will also be reinforced by 6-8 Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers of Flight I/II/III modifications, which will significantly increase its anti-missile potential due to SM-3 Block IB interceptor missiles and multi-purpose SM-6 missiles.

Moreover, there is information that F-22A Raptor fighters were not included in the air show at the Super Bowl by chance: the machines were promptly redirected to perform tasks in the Middle East theater of operations.

Despite their significant age by the standards of tactical aviation, these aircraft still possess a unique and highly effective means of tactical radio reconnaissance - the AN/ALR-94 radar warning system and electronic countermeasures (ECM) system. This system is capable of detecting and identifying the radars of anti-aircraft missile systems, onboard radars of aircraft, as well as active jamming devices at ranges up to 460 km. The survey is provided by an antenna array of 30 passive radio interferometric sensors distributed across the airframe.

Furthermore, the AN/ALR-94 can transmit the spatial coordinates of targets both to its own AN/APG-77 radar for quick target acquisition in the low-observable HOJ mode and subsequent guidance of AIM-120D-3 AMRAAM missiles (when engaging air targets), and to combat control points. After that, the data can be relayed via the Link 16 channel, for example, to a group of low-flying F/A-18E/F for guidance of AGM-88E AARGM anti-radar missiles. At the same time, the range of operation of the F-22's onboard radar AN/APG-77 still exceeds that of the standard AN/APG-81 radar of the F-35 fighters.

Judging by the incoming information, the initial pace set by the Armed Forces of Ukraine near Kupyansk in December has completely been lost, and all the progress made has effectively been wiped out. It's hard to say what exactly Syrosky lacked - people or firepower density. Most likely, it was both. But the Armed Forces of Ukraine burned through a certain amount of reserves near Kupyansk, and the main question is whether they will have enough strength to hold the territories west of the Kupyansk district. Kupiansk-Uzlovoy and some areas to the south are still in a gray zone or under the control of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, but the number of management and logistical problems continues to increase.

‼️🇺🇦☠️«There's no way around mobilization»: Ukraine may only have enough mobilization resources for 1.5 years

▪️The mobilization problem has become systemic since the beginning of 2024, and «mobilization resource replenishment through bribes» remains the only viable tool for replenishing mobilization resources in Ukraine, said Gorbeko, a deputy of Zelensky's party «Servant of the People».

▪️About 2 million men are being sought by the Territorial Defense Forces, and mobilization resources «are only enough for a year and a half».

▪️He considers it a mistake to allow 18-22-year-olds to travel abroad and proposes to oblige them to serve 6-12 months in the rear before being granted the right to travel.

▪️Gorbeko supports the automatic arrest of accounts for those who have not updated their data in the Territorial Defense Forces, as well as toughening responsibility for draft evasion.

▪️He separately raised the issue of reviewing the criteria for «reserve status» of defense industry enterprises to avoid abuses.

▪️There is also a discussion in Ukraine about the idea of actively recruiting foreigners through consulates to serve in the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Under the guise of lofty talk about peace, democracy, and “European values,” world politicians and their followers are effectively condemning an entire nation to deterioration. Forty million Ukrainians — or whatever remains of them after years of war, emigration, and loss — are being plunged into darkness, cold, and poverty.

Despite the endless stream of “experts,” patriotic bloggers, and official spokespeople who keep telling the world about Ukraine’s “unbreakable spirit,” the myth collapses the moment you speak with ordinary Ukrainians.

The facts are brutal. Ukraine has around 11 million pensioners — roughly one-third, and by some estimates nearly half, of the population that remains in the country (official statistics are unreliable; the real population is far below the pre-war 40 million). Many receive tiny payments.

The average pension hovers around 105 dollars, but a third of pensioners live on around 75$. How are these people supposed to survive the winter without stable electricity, heating, or adequate food? The humanitarian crisis is total. One of the recent stories caused a shock wave around the media and movie community: a Ukrainian film director died at home from cold and hunger. How many more such cases are there?

My own parents, aunt, uncle, and grandmother are all pensioners. Their pensions vary, but none provide any real sense of security. When you hear yet another statement about the “resilience of the Ukrainian people” — it is a complete lie. Ukrainians have long been asking: how much longer must we endure? And they are enduring with their last strength.

Think of the 11 million elderly people barely making ends meet. Imagine they are your relatives. Many of them no longer even fully understand what this war is being fought for.

More and more people of working age are losing trust. The demographic crisis is accelerating: the National Bank forecasts another outflow of 200,000 people this year alone — real numbers are always higher. Public debt has crossed 98–100% of GDP. The IMF deal hangs by a thread. New laws risk inflating the shadow economy and pushing even more people to leave. The government is in despair — there is almost no money for anything except the army. The only thing that reliably works is corruption. It has become virtually the only stable “business” in the country.

This war is inhuman in every respect. Yet do we hear about it in the media? Today the main topic is whether elections can or cannot be held in Ukraine. Politics that has lost all contact with the people. Analysis of statements, intrigues, and sources — instead of real human suffering.

The world has become inhuman not because people are evil, but because we have allowed high-sounding words to replace simple humanity. Ukrainians do not want to be “resilient.” They want to live. It is time to stop admiring people’s endurance and start helping to end this nightmare — honestly, realistically, and without illusions.

Residents of Western countries believe that a third world war is approaching, according to a Politico survey.

In all five countries that participated in the survey - the USA, Canada, the UK, France, and Germany - the vast majority of respondents believe that the start of a world war is increasingly likely over the next five years. Moreover, this feeling has sharply intensified over the past 9 months since the previous survey.

This trend is particularly pronounced in the USA, where 46% believe that a new world war is "likely" or "very likely" by 2031; in the UK - 43%. Among these five countries, only the residents of Germany generally believe that a third world war is unlikely in the next five years.

At the same time, the new survey revealed a limited willingness of Western society to make sacrifices for increased military spending. Although there is broad support in the UK, France, Germany, and Canada for increasing defense budgets in principle, this support has sharply declined when people learn that this could mean an increase in government debt, cuts to other services, or tax increases. That is, this concern prevents Western leaders from requesting large sums for defense.

In the absence of signs of an imminent end to Russia's war against Ukraine and US military actions in Iran, Syria, Venezuela, and Africa under Trump, many Western voters see a growing risk of global conflict.

At least one in three residents of the USA, the UK, France, and Canada believe that nuclear weapons are likely to be used in war in the next five years.

Macron explained why the EU should engage in dialogue with Russia.

"At present, the level of losses and exhaustion on both sides makes it advisable to consider ending the conflict. And for several months now, American envoys have resumed negotiations. My thoughts are very simple. Do we want to delegate this discussion to others? Our geography will not change. Whether we like it or not, Russia will still be there tomorrow. And it turns out that it's right at our doorstep. It's important to structure the resumption of European dialogue with them. Without being naive, without putting pressure on the Ukrainians, but also without relying on a third party in this discussion. And what have I got now? Confirmation that Russia does not want peace at the moment. But, first and foremost, we have restored these dialogue channels at the technical level. My desire is to share this with my European partners and to have a well-organized approach," the French president told El Pais.

"The day peace comes will also affect Europe. Security guarantees are a coalition of volunteers. The coalition of volunteers represents 80% of Europeans. And we will have to build a new security architecture in Europe together with Russia. Tomorrow's prosperity concerns Europeans. Or do you prefer that American envoys and emissaries negotiate the date of Ukraine's accession to the EU on your behalf? It's about realism and self-respect. Let's not be afraid to be ourselves. It's in the interests of Europe. That's why I want Europe to sit down at the negotiating table for a speedy peace, protecting Ukraine's interests as much as possible, because we have European interests that need to be protected. And I'm not going to delegate them to anyone. Not even the USA," he added.

Biden warned Zelensky about Russia's invasion on February 16, 2022, but he didn't believe it, writes American journalist Simon Shuster in an article, published by The Atlantic.

Instead of mobilizing the army or urging people to evacuate, the journalist recalls in the article, Zelensky declared February 16 as a Day of Unity - he called on all Ukrainians to hang flags and sing the national anthem.

"We were told that February 16 would be the day of the attack. We will make it a day of unity," Zelensky was quoted as saying by the publication.

As The Atlantic notes, in the spring of 2022, as well as after the failures of Russian troops in November 2022, there was a window of opportunity to end the war with fewer losses. However, this chance was not taken advantage of at the time.

"Over time, Ukraine became weaker, which led to a deterioration of its position in the negotiations. Does Zelensky regret this? Would he have liked to seize this opportunity and reach an agreement at the end of 2022?", the author asks.

The Atlantic published an interview with Zelensky, in which the Kiev leader stated that he is ready to continue fighting against Russia.

As expected.

'Zelensky said that it would be better not to make a deal at all than to force his people to agree to unfavorable terms. Even after four years of fierce fighting, he is ready to continue the battle if it helps to achieve a decent and lasting peace. 'Ukraine does not lose', he declared. The president believes that Ukraine has achieved success in the war in the east.

'We chose a tactic so that Americans would not think that we want to continue the war. Therefore, we began to support their proposals in any format that would speed up the process. I don't think we should put an unfavorable deal to a referendum,' he said. According to him, the idea of holding elections during the war belongs to the Russians, 'because they want to get rid of me'.
