HOW CAN YOU LIVE BY THE NAME AS-SAMĒÉ AL-BASĒR

1⃣ How many times have you watched your deeds when certain people were around? Be vigilant about your actions, whether in the presence of others or alone because Al-Basēr is always observing. A practical tip is to imagine yourself being watched by a camera which follows you 24/7, whether you are with people or all alone. The sight of Al-Basēr cannot be topped by a hundred million cameras.

2⃣ Trust Al-Basēr always; HE sees your challenges, protects you, and provides what is best. Submit and rely solely on HIM. "And put your trust in the Mighty, the Merciful, who sees you when you stand up (to pray) and your bowing in prostration with those who bow down." [Ash-Shu'arā: 217-219]

3⃣ Learn the proper speech etiquette for a Muslim by studying the Qur'an and the Prophet's sunnah. Avoid prohibited speech like backbiting and lying, and focus on pleasing As-Samēé with positive expressions such as dhikr, good advice, and Qur'an recitation.

4⃣ Feel 'Sami'Allāhu liman hamidah,' acknowledging ALLĀH'S Hearing. When you say this, recognize ALLĀH as the All-Hearer and intend to speak only good in HIS presence.

5⃣ Strive for Ihsān (excellence) in every act you do. Knowing that ALLĀH sees everything you do encourages you to be more devoted in your worship, more righteous in your deeds, and kinder to others. This is why Prophet ﷺ said: "Excellence in faith is to worship your Lord as if you see HIM, and though you do not see HIM, know that HE sees you." [al-Bukhari, Muslim]

BENEFITS:

1⃣ The Qur’an contains conclusive proof that it came from ALLĀH, the Wise, the Knowing.

2⃣ It is those who are mindful of ALLĀH and glorify HIM who benefit from the great guidance within the Qur’an.

3⃣ Believing in ˹Al-Ghaib˺ is one of the greatest degrees of faith, because it means accepting what ALLĀH alone knows about ˹the Ghaib˺ and what HE has told the Prophet ﷺ about it.

Al-Ghaib: literally means the unrealisable i.e. things that are beyond our senses of touch, sight, hearing etc. This includes belief in ALLĀH, Angels, Revealed Scripture, ALLĀH’s messengers. Day of Recompense, and Al-Qadar (divine pre-ordainments). It also includes what ALLĀH and HIS Messenger informed about the past, present and future e.g. the creation of the heavens and earth, botanical and zoological life, stories about the nations of the past and about Paradise and Hell etc.

4⃣ ALLĀH often mentions prayer and giving Zakat together. Prayer shows sincerity to ALLĀH, and giving Zakat shows kindness to creation. Together they are the route to happiness and success.

5⃣ Having faith in ALLĀH and doing good works leads to guidance and success in this world and the next.

VICTORY ONLY COMES AFTER SUCCEEDING IN THE TRIALS

ALLĀH says:

Do you think you will be admitted into Paradise without being tested like those before you?

Here, ALLĀH tells us that HE will inevitably test HIS slaves with both ease and hardship, as HE tested those who came before them. This is HIS way that never alters or changes. Whoever adheres to HIS religion and follows HIS laws will inevitably be tested; if he is patient in bearing the decree of ALLĀH and does not worry about the difficulties he encounters for HIS sake, then he is the sincere one who has attained true happiness and high status. Whoever regards the trials that befall people as a punishment from ALLĀH, in that hardship deterred him from carrying on what he had committed himself to, then he is insincere in his claim to be a believer, because faith is not mere wishful thinking and claims, unless it is proven or disproven by one’s deeds.

THE DISBELIEVERS ARE PUNISHED IN WAYS THEY DO NOT PRESUME

ALLAH said:

So leave to ME those who reject this message

meaning, the Qur'an.

This is a sever threat which means, `leave ME alone with this person; I know about him and how I will gradually punish him and increase him in his falsehood. I am giving him respite for a while, then I will seize him with a mighty and powerful punishment.'

Thus, ALLĀH says,

WE will gradually draw them to destruction in ways they cannot comprehend.

meaning, and they will not even be aware of it. Rather, they will believe that it is a noble blessing from ALLĀH, but really the same matter is actually a form of humiliation (for them).

This is similar to ALLĀH'S statement,

So, when they forgot that which they had been reminded, We opened for them the gates of everything, until in the midst of their enjoyment in that which they were given, all of a sudden, WE punished them, and lo! They were plunged into destruction with deep regrets and sorrows. {al-An'am: Verse 44}

{Tafsi‌r Ibn Kathīr}

Al-Hasan Al-Basri said,

"Whomever ALLĀH gives provision and he thinks that ALLĀH is not testing him, has no wisdom. Whomever has little provision and thinks that ALLĀH will not look at (provide for) him, has no wisdom."

O Children of Adam! Take your adornment to every Masjid. Eat and drink, but do not waste. Surely HE does not like the wasteful.

Say, Who has forbidden the adornments and lawful provisions ALLĀH has brought forth for HIS servants? Say, They are for those who believed during the life of this world, exclusively ˹for them˺ on the Day of Resurrection. This is how WE make OUR revelations clear for people of knowledge.

Say, My Lord has only forbidden immoralities - what is apparent of them and what is concealed - and sin, and oppression without right, and that you associate with ALLĀH that for which HE has not sent down authority, and that you say about ALLĀH that which you do not know.

FASTING AL-AYYAM AL-BEED (THE WHITE DAYS) FOR RAJAB 1445H

The white days of the month refer to the 13th, 14th, and 15th of each lunar month. The moon is at its fullest and most luminous during this period. Fasting on these days (Al-Ayyam Al-Beed) is sunnah, mentioned in various hadith.

The Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ said: "Fasting three days of each month is equivalent to fasting for a lifetime. The days of al-beed (white days) are the 13th, 14th & 15th." [Sunan an-Nasai]

ALLAH'S Messenger ﷺ said: "It is sufficient for you to fast three days every month because, for every good deed, you will have (the reward of) ten like it, so that will be like fasting for a lifetime." [Sahih al-Bukhari]

Loss caused by ignorance is not merely limited to the inability to make significant achievements in life.

Without knowledge, one can lead a very bleak and long path that puts one off track in the blink of an eye.

One may fall into a hole of despair, or temptation, or worse fall into shirk without realizing it.

The one who wants to be reliant on ALLĀH must learn what reliance is, for otherwise he will omit to adopt the necessary means and tools of success and fall into error, while at the same time deluding himself that he is reliant on ALLĀH.

The one who seeks to be patient and enduring should take knowledge as his vehicle to this aim; otherwise, he will be humiliated, thinking his suffering is a kind of endurance.

Say: ‘Are those who know equal to those who know not?’ It is only men of understanding who will remember.ʼ [az-Zumar: Verse 9]

FORBIDDING MURDER AND SUICIDE

ALLAH said,

And do not kill yourselves.

That is, do not kill one another, and no one should kill himself. This includes throwing oneself into risky activities or dangers that may lead to harm or death.

Surely, ALLAH is Most Merciful to you.

By HIS mercy HE protects you and your wealth, forbids you to waste it or destroy it, and HE has ordained consequences for that in the form of hudood punishments.

{Tafsir As-Sadi}

Abu Hurayrah said that the Messenger of ALLAH, peace and blessings be upon him, said,

"Whoever kills himself with an iron tool, then his tool will be in his hand and he will keep stabbing himself with it in the Fire of Jahannam, forever and ever.

Whoever kills himself with poison, then his poison will be in his hand and he will keep taking it in the Fire of Jahannam forever and ever.

Whoever kills himself by throwing himself from a mountain, will keep falling in the Fire of Jahannam forever and ever."

{al-Bukhari #5442, Muslim #109}

Jundub reported: The Messenger of ALLAH, peace and blessings be upon him, said,

“A man among those before you was wounded. He was in such anguish that he took a knife, slit his wrist, and let the blood flow until he died. ALLAH Almighty said: MY servant has preceded me with his soul, so I have forbidden Paradise for him.”

ALLĀH IS THE PROTECTOR OF THE RIGHTEOUS

ALLĀH said,

Verily, my protector is ALLĀH Who has revealed the Book (the Qur'an), and HE protects the righteous.

ALLAH'S support is sufficient and HE will suffice for me, HE is My supporter, I trust in HIM and take refuge with HIM. HE is my protector, in this life and the Hereafter, and the protector of every righteous believer after me.

Similarly, the people of Hud said,

"All that we say is that some of our gods have seized you with evil (madness)."

Hud replied: "I call ALLĀH to witness, and bear you witness that I am free from that which you ascribe (as partners in worship, with HIM (ALLĀH)). So plot against me, all of you, and give me no respite. I put my trust in ALLĀH, my Lord and your Lord! There is not a moving (living) creature but HE has the grasp of its forelock. Verily, my Lord is on a path that is straight. {Hud: Verse 54-56}

A GOOD LIFE IS CONNECTED TO PATIENCE AND CONTENTMENT.

The reason for sadness in life is missing out on quick fortunes.

There is no continuous happiness in life, except for one who is occupied with the pleasure of his loved one, and being occupied in preparation to meet HIM.

If he finds happiness in this life then he uses it to assist him in acquiring the Hereafter. And if he finds hardship, then he assumes patience as a reward for the Hereafter.

He is content with all that happens to him. He believes this to be from whatever ALLĀH has destined and understands that it is HIS will.

A poet said: “If me staying awake pleases you, then farewell to falling asleep.”

He who seeks fortune will become frustrated if he did not achieve it. He becomes a different person if he becomes poor or humiliated.

This is because he is seeking his desire.

How eloquent was what Al-Husri said: “I owe myself nothing, and have nothing to do with myself!”

These are words of a learned person, because he contemplates the reality of ownership. A servant may not object to HIS master’s orders, and his wish that things were different than they are is of no consequence.

“ALLĀH has indeed purchased from the believers their lives and wealth in exchange for Paradise.” [at- Tawbah: 111]

He looks at himself as owned by ALLĀH. A person, who sells a lamb to another, must not object if the buyer slaughters the lamb.

By ALLĀH! If the Owner says, ‘I have only created you as a proof of my existence, then I will make you vanish and never resurrect you’, then good souls must say: ‘We listen and obey, what do we own of ourselves for us to say anything?’

The journey requires a lot of perseverance. Once the final destination seen from a distance however, all tiredness will disappear.

So beginners! Be patient, for the destination is seen. And those who truly know ALLĀH ought to be happy, because they will be greeted with glad-tidings.

HOW CAN YOU LIVE BY THE NAME AL-QARĪB

1⃣ In Salah, connect with Al-Qarīb, acknowledging HIS proximity by HIS knowledge. Share worries, seek help, express gratitude, transform concerns into supplications, and be certain of a response. ALLĀH mentioned: Indeed, my Lord is near and responsive. {Hud: Verse 61}

2⃣ Heed the call of Al-Qarīb.
When MY servants ask you ˹O Prophet˺ about ME: I am truly near. I respond to one’s prayer when they call upon ME. So let them respond ˹with obedience˺ to ME and believe in ME that they may be  ˹rightly˺ guided. {Al-Baqarah: 186}

So not only let this Name inspire you to ask HIM, but also by following HIS commands, avoiding HIS prohibitions, and sticking to the guidance found in the Quran and Sunnah.

3⃣ Be cautious of your words and actions in all aspects of life, recognizing that Al-Qarīb is closer to you than your jugular vein. Feel comforted by HIS proximity, but also be ashamed of any wrongdoing, knowing HE is intimately close to you by HIS knowledge and listening. Al-Qarīb uses HIS attribute of closeness together with HIS attribute of hearing when HE said: Say, If I should err, I would only err against myself. But if I am guided, it is by what my Lord reveals to me. Indeed, HE is Hearing and near. [Fātir: Verse 50]

4⃣ Aspire to be among those near to the Prophet ﷺ in Paradise. Strive for this elevated status by prostrating frequently in prayer, following his Sunnah, and ALLĀH to grant you his companionship. Rabi’ah ibn Ka’b said I spent the night with the Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ and I brought him water for his ablution and his needs. The Prophet ﷺ said to me, “Ask.” I said, “I ask for your companionship in Paradise.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “And anything else besides that?” I said, “That is all.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “Then help me do it for you by prostrating often.” {Muslim 489}

BENEFITS:

1⃣ ALLĀH informs that HIS allies are those who believe and have Taqwa of ALLĀH as HE defined them. {Ibn Kathīr}

2⃣ They are those who believe in ALLĀH and in HIS angels, HIS Books, HIS Messenger, the Last Day, and the divine decree, both good and bad; and they confirm their faith by fearing ALLĀH and guarding against evil, and by complying with HIS commands and heeding HIS prohibitions. {As-Sa'di}

3⃣ Based on this, whoever claims to be an ally while he does not perform the obligatory duties, does not avoid forbidden things, and may even do something that contradicts that (i.e the shariah), no one should say: This is an ally of ALLĀH. {Al-Qāsimī}

4⃣ Glad tidings in this world means being spoken well of, praised and loved by the believers. It also includes good dreams, and the kindness that ALLĀH shows to him by enabling him to do the best of deeds and acquire the best of characteristics, and by diverting from him bad characteristics. {As-Sa'di}

5⃣ Regarding glad tidings in the Hereafter, three statements are mentioned: Paradise (reported by Abu Hurairah), news of ALLĀH'S pleasure at the soul's departure (Ibn Abbas), and reassurance in the grave with the promise of eternal bliss (Muqātil). {Zād al-Masiīr}

6⃣ ALLĀH's promises cannot be broken, and that is because HIS promises are in HIS words, so if the words are not changed, the promises will not be changed. {Ibn Abbās}

7⃣ The believer who calls to ALLĀH must not be saddened by the words of the people of falsehood and their lies, so that he does not cease from his call, and he must know that all glory belongs to ALLĀH, and HE will honor him with it and humiliate his enemies. {Abu Bakr al-Jazairi}

SAYING "IF ALLĀH WILLS" WHEN PLANNING FUTURE ACTIONS

ALLĀH says:

And never say of anything, “I will definitely do that tomorrow,” without adding, “if ALLĀH wills!”

This prohibition is like others; although it was addressed to the Messenger (ﷺ) for a specific reason, it is also applicable to all accountable individuals. ALLĀH forbade the individual to say, concerning matters in the future, “I will definitely do that” without also mentioning the will of ALLĀH. This is so as to avoid falling into error, which is speaking of the unseen future without being certain as to whether he will do it or not, or whether it will happen or not. That is because failing to say “if ALLĀH wills” is attributing the action to the will of the individual, independently of ALLĀH, and that is not allowed, because the will is all ALLĀH’s.

And you do not will except that ALLĀH wills - Lord of the worlds. {at-Takwīr: 29}

Moreover, mentioning the will of ALLĀH makes things easier, brings barakah (blessing) and is a means of seeking the help of one’s Lord.

{Tafsi‌r As-Sa'di}

Abu Hurayrah (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ) said:

Suleiman bin Dawud (peace be upon them both) said: "Tonight I will go round (i.e. have sexual relations with) one hundred women (my wives) everyone of whom will deliver a male child who will fight in ALLĀH'S Cause."

On that an Angel said to him, "Say: 'If ALLĀH will.' " But Solomon did not say it and forgot to say it. Then he had sexual relations with them but none of them delivered any child except for one who gave birth to a half-formed child.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "If Solomon had said: 'If ALLĀH will,' ALLĀH would have fulfilled his desire and that saying would have made him more hopeful."

THERE IS NO MONASTICISM IN ISLAM

ALLĀH says;

O believers! Do not forbid the good things which ALLĀH has made lawful for you

Ali bin Abi Talhah said that Ibn Abbas said,

"This Ayah was revealed about some of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ who said, We should cut off our male organs, abandon the desires of this life and travel in the land, just as the Ruhban (monks) do.' When the Prophet ﷺ heard of this statement, he summoned them and asked them if they made this statement and they answered Yes.'

The Prophet ﷺ said,
I fast and break my fast, pray and sleep, and marry women. Whoever follows my Sunnah is of me, and whoever abandons my Sunnah is not of me."

It is recorded in the Two Sahihs that Aishah said that; 'some of the Companions asked the wives of the Prophet about the acts of worship that he performed in private.

One of them said, "I will not eat meat," another said, "I will not marry women," while the third said, "I will not sleep on the bed."

When the Prophet ﷺ heard this statement, he said,

"What is the matter with some people who said such and such I fast and break the fast, sleep and wake to stand to pray, eat meat, and marry women. He who is not pleased with my Sunnah is not of me."

ALLĀH'S statement

and do not transgress.

means, do not exaggerate and make it hard for yourselves by prohibiting the permissible things. Do not transgress the limits by excessively indulging in the permissible matters; only use of it what satisfies your need; and do not fall into extravagance.

ALLĀH said in other Ayat,

And eat and drink but waste not by extravagance. {Al-Araaf: 31}

and,

And those, who, when they spend, are neither extravagant nor miserly, but hold a medium ˹way˺ between those ˹extremes˺. {al-Furqān: 67}

So ALLĀH legislated a medium way between those who are extreme and those who fall into shortcomings, and it does not allow excessive application, nor lack of application.

ENCOURAGEMENT TO OBEY ALLĀH BEFORE THE DAY OF RESURRECTION

ALLĀH said:

Respond to your Lord before the coming of a Day from ALLĀH that cannot be averted.

Here ALLĀH instructs HIS slaves to respond to HIM by complying with HIS commands and heeding HIS prohibitions, and by hastening to do so and not procrastinating, before the Day of Resurrection comes which, when it comes, cannot be put back and it will not be possible to make up for what was missed.

No refuge will you have that Day, nor for you will there be any denial.

On that day, the individual will have no refuge to turn to, and no way to escape or flee from his Lord; rather the angels will surround all creatures from the rear and will call out: "O jinn and humans, if you are able to pass beyond the confines of the heavens and the earth, then do so. But you cannot pass beyond them unless you have power." {ar-Rahman: Verse 33}

On that day, no one will be able to deny what he committed of sins; in fact even if he does deny it, his own physical faculties will testify against him.

In this and similar verses, there is a condemnation of those who hope to live long, and a command to make the most of any opportunity that comes along to do a good deed, because procrastinating leads to a great deal of trouble.

{Tafsi‌r As-Sa'di}

Abu Hurairah (May ALLĀH be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of ALLĀH said,

"Hasten to do good deeds before you are overtaken by one of the seven afflictions."

Then (giving a warning) he said, "Are you waiting for poverty which will make you unmindful of devotion, or prosperity which will make you corrupt, or a disease which will disable you, or senility which will make you mentally unstable, or sudden death which will take you all of a sudden, or Ad-Dajjal who is the worst expected, or the Hour; and the Hour will be most grievous and most bitter.''

HOW TO CATCH UP WITH RAK'AH

If a person joins the congregation when the imam is bowing, one of the following three scenarios applies:

1️⃣ He says takbīratul-ihram (saying “Allāhu akbar” to start the prayer) whilst standing, then he bows whilst the imam is bowing. In this case he has caught up with the rak‘ah with the imam.

2️⃣ He says takbīratul-ihram whilst the imam is bowing, but he bows after the imam has stood up from rukoo’. In this case he is not counted as having caught up with the rak‘ah with the imam, and he has to make it up.

3️⃣ He bows straightaway without saying takbīratul-ihram. In this case his prayer is invalid, because he has omitted one of the pillars or essential parts of the prayer, which is takbīratul-ihram.

"The fuqaha’ are agreed that whoever catches up with the imam in rukoo’ has caught up with the rak‘ah, because the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Whoever catches up with rukoo’ has caught up with the rak‘ah.'" {Abu Dawūd}

Shaykh al-Albāni said (in Irwa’ al-Ghaleel, pg. 262): one of the things that strengthens the hadīth is the fact that the Sahābah acted in accordance with this:

1️⃣ Ibn Mas’ood, who said: “Whoever does not catch up with the imam when he is bowing has not caught up with that rak‘ah.”

2️⃣ ‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar, who said: “If you come when the imam is bowing, and you put your hands on you knees before the imam stands up, then you have caught up (with that rak‘ah).”

3️⃣ Zayd ibn Thaabit, who used to say: “Whoever catches up with the rak‘ah before the Imam raises his head has indeed caught up with the rak‘ah.”

How could I take besides HIM other gods whose intercession would not be of any benefit to me, nor could they save me if the Most Merciful intends for me some adversity?

Indeed, I would then be in manifest error. Indeed, I have believed in your Lord, so listen to me.

It was said, "Enter Paradise." He said, "I wish my people could know of how my Lord has forgiven me and placed me among the honored."

ADHERING TO TAWHĪD UNTIL DEATH

ALLĀH said,

(Yaqub saying to his sons) "O my sons! ALLĀH has chosen for you the (true) religion, then die not except as Muslims."

Meaning, perform righteous deeds during your lifetime and remain on this path, so that ALLĀH will endow you with the favor of dying upon it.

Usually, one dies upon the path that he lived on and is resurrected according to what he died on. ALLĀH, the Most Generous, helps those who seek to do good deeds to remain on the righteous path.

This by no means contradicts the authentic Hadith that says,

Man might perform the works of the people of Paradise until only a span of outstretched arms or a cubit separates him from it, then the Book (destiny) takes precedence, and he performs the works of the people of the Fire and thus enters it.

Also, man might perform the works of the people of the Fire until only a span of outstretched arms or a cubit separates him from the Fire, but the Book takes precedence and he performs the works of the people of Paradise and thus enters it.

ALLĀH said:

As for him who gives (in charity) and keeps his duty to ALLĀH and fears HIM. And believes in Al-Husna. WE will make smooth for him the path of ease (goodness).

But he who is a greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient. And belies Al-Husna (none has the right to be worshipped except ALLĀH). WE will make smooth for him the path for evil.

[Surah Al-Layl: 5-11]

"So WE sent against them a wind and armies that you did not see." [Al-Ahzab: 9]

It is not necessary to see the steps of relief, relief comes to you secretly and you do not know it.

QUALITIES OF THE RIGHTEOUS WIFE

The woman’s role is to obey her Lord and obey her husband. Hence ALLĀH says:

So righteous women are devoutly obedient, and guard in the husband's absence, what ALLĀH orders them to guard.

That is, they obey their husbands even in their absence; the wife guards her husband with regard to herself and his wealth. That is because ALLĀH has enjoined upon them to guard themselves, and HE has guided them to that; they could not do it without HIS help, because the human soul is inclined to evil. But whoever puts his trust in ALLĀH, HE will suffice him and take care of everything that worries him of his religious and worldly affairs.

{Tafsi‌r As-Sa'di}

Abu Hurayrah said that the Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ said,

"The best women is she who when you look at her, she pleases you, when you command her she obeys you, and when you are absent, she protects her honor and your property."

{An-Nasā'i #3231}

Abdur-Rahman bin 'Awf said that the Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ said,

"If the woman prayed her five daily prayers, fasted her month of Ramaḍān, protected her chastity and obeyed her husband, she will be told, 'Enter Paradise from any of its doors you wish.'"

{Musnad Ahmad #1661}

Unquestionably, ˹for˺ the allies of ALLĀH there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.

Those who believed and were fearing ALLĀH.

For them are glad tidings in the life of this world and in the hereafter; there can be no change in the words (promises) of ALLĀH. That is the supreme triumph.

And let not their speech grieve you. Surely all honour and power belongs to ALLĀH. HE is the All-Hearing, All-Knowing.

{Yunus: Verse 62-65}
