DO NOT DESPAIR OVER WHAT IS NOT YOURS

If we desire to undertake a task or passionately seek something, and despite our intense efforts, but at the end of the day we are unable to attain it, then know that it was not destined for us by ALLĀH. Because if there were goodness in it for us, it would have certainly reached us.

CONTEMPLATE YOUR QUR'AN RECITATION!

Reciting the Qur’an has many benefits, but it's not just meant for recitation. It's a blessing meant for reflection, contemplation, reasoning and thoughtful consideration. ALLĀH encourages us to frequently engage in this type of contemplation:

كِتَـٰبٌ أَنزَلۡنَـٰهُ إِلَیۡكَ مُبَـٰرَكࣱ لِّیَدَّبَّرُوۤا۟ ءَایَـٰتِهِۦ وَلِیَتَذَكَّرَ أُو۟لُوا۟ ٱلۡأَلۡبَـٰبِ
˹This is˺ a blessed Book which We have revealed to you ˹O Prophet˺ so that they may contemplate its verses, and people of reason may be mindful.

{Sād: Verse 29}

Contemplation of the Qur’an means contemplation of its meanings, purposes, and rulings, not just recitation, despite its great reward. While explaining the importance of contemplation, Ibn al-Qayyim, may ALLĀH have mercy on him, said:

“In short, there is nothing more beneficial for the heart than reading the Qur’an and with contemplation and reflection. The Qur’an encompasses all the levels of the travellers, the conditions of the workers, and stations of those possessing knowledge. It is the Qur’an that generates love, desire, fear, hope, repentance, reliance, pleasure, entrustment, gratitude, patience, and the rest of the different states that are life to the heart and perfection of it. Likewise, it repels all the rebuked characteristics. If people only knew the great value of reciting the Qur’an with reflection, then they would devote themselves to it above anything else.”

{Miftāh Daar as-Sa'ādah || Page 204}

To truly be guided by the Qur'an, it's important to understand what we recite. For those of us who can't comprehend Arabic, reading the translation and tafsir can help us reflect on what we have recited. By reflecting on what we have learned and considering how we can apply it to our daily lives, we can realize the true purpose of the Qur'an and use it as guidance.

May ALLĀH make it easy for us and help us reflect and understand the Qur'an, and make it a means of attaining higher status in this world and the hereafter, Aamīn.

THE VIRTUE OF PARDONING OTHERS

ALLĀH stated:

وَأَن تَعْفُواْ أَقْرَبُ لِلتَّقْوَى وَلَا تَنسَوُاْ ٱلۡفَضۡلَ بَيۡنَكُمۡۚ
And to forego it is nearer to piety. And do not forget graciousness between you.

ALLĀH states that the one who forgoes it is closer to piety, because it is an act of kindness that leads to people feeling at ease, and because the individual should not neglect to do acts of kindness or forget graciousness which is the pinnacle of interaction, because interactions between people occur on two levels: either justice and fairness, which is obligatory and is the basis on which people give and take what is due, or graciousness and kindness, which means giving what is not due and being easygoing with regard to one’s own rights, suppressing any feelings of annoyance. No one should forget this level, even if that is only on some occasions, especially with regard to those with whom one has to interact or mix with. ALLĀH will reward those who do good by His grace and generosity.

{Tafsir As-Sa'di}

Anas ibn Malik (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) reported: We were sitting with the Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ and he said,

“A man from the people of Paradise is coming to you.”

A man from the Ansar came whose beard was disheveled by the water of ablution, and he was carrying both of his shoes with his left hand. The next day the Prophet repeated the same words, and the man came in the same condition. On the third day, the Prophet repeated the same again, and the man came in the same condition.

When the Prophet stood up to leave, Abdullah ibn Amr followed the man and said to him, “I am in an argument with my father, and I have sworn not to enter my home for three days. May I stay with you?” The man said yes. Abdullah stayed three nights with the man, but he never saw him praying at night. Whenever he went to bed, the man would remember ALLĀH and rest until he woke up for morning prayer. Abdullah said that he had never heard anything but good words coming from his mouth.

When three nights had passed, and he did not see anything special about his actions, Abdullah asked him, “O servant of ALLĀH, I have not been in an argument with my father, nor have I cut off relations with him. I heard the Prophet say three times that a man from the people of Paradise was coming to us and then you came. I thought I would stay with you to see what you are doing that I could follow, but I did not see you do many good deeds. Why did the Prophet convey this about you?”

The man said, “It is not but as you see, except that I find no malice within myself towards the Muslims, nor do I envy anyone for the good that ALLĀH has given them.”

Abdullah said, “This is what was conveyed about you, for we have been unable to do so.”

If WE willed, WE could make it [dry] debris, and you would remain in wonder,

[Saying], "Indeed, we are in debt; Rather, we have been deprived."

Have you considered the water which you drink? Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it WE who bring it down?

If WE willed, WE could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful?

DO NOT BEGIN FASTING UNTIL THE CRESCENT IS SIGHTED

Ibn Umar (may ALLĀH be pleased with them) reported: The Prophet ﷺ said,

“Do not fast unless you see the crescent (of Ramadān), and do not give up fasting till you see the crescent (of Shawwal), but if the sky is overcast (if you cannot see it), then act on estimation (i.e. count Sha'ban as 30 days).”

In another narration, the Prophet ﷺ said, “If the sky is cloudy for you, then complete the term as thirty days.”

{al-Bukhārī #1807, Muslim #1080}

It was (also) narrated from Ibn 'Umar that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "We are an unlettered Ummah, we do not use astronomical counting or computation. The month is like this, and this, and this," he did three times, showing it as twenty-nine.

BENEFITS:

1⃣ The virtue of the month of Ramadān and the virtue of the Qur’an.

2⃣ It is obligatory for the accountable to fast Ramadān, and the accountable person is Muslim, sane, attained puberty, and woman free from menstrual and postpartum blood.

3⃣ A concession for the sick who fears delaying his recovery or worsening his illness, and a traveller who is travelling a distance that makes it permissible for one to shorten the prayer.

4⃣ It is necessary to make up the fast for those who break their fast due to an excuse.

5⃣ Islamic law is easy and free of hardship and difficulty.

6⃣ The permissibility of saying “Allāhu Akbar” on the night and day of Eid. This “Allāhu Akbar” is part of giving thanks for the blessing of guidance to Islam.

7⃣ Obedience is gratitude. Whoever does not obey ALLĀH and HIS Messenger is not thankful.

8⃣ The closeness of ALLĀH to HIS servants, as all the worlds are in HIS grip and under HIS authority, and nothing of HIS creation is far from ALLĀH, as there is no being except that ALLĀH sees, hears, and has power over it. This is the reality of closeness.

9⃣ It is disliked to raise one’s voice during acts of worship, except for the Talbiyah, the call to prayer, and the Iqama.

1⃣0⃣ The obligation to respond to ALLĀH with faith and good deeds.

1⃣1⃣ Guidance is in obedience to ALLĀH, and misguidance and foolishness is in disobeying HIM Almighty.

THE ORDER TO FAST

ALLĀH said:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ امَنُواْ كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الصِّيَامُ كَمَا كُتِبَ عَلَى الَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ
O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you

Here ALLĀH tells us of the blessings that HE has bestowed upon HIS slaves by enjoining them to fast as HE enjoined it upon previous nations, because it is one of the laws and commands that are in the best interests of people in all times.

This verse also offers encouragement to this Ummah, that they should compete with others in striving to do perfect deeds and hastening to acquire righteous qualities; this is not something too burdensome which they have been singled out to do.

Then ALLĀH tells us of the wisdom behind the prescription of fasting, as HE says:

لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ
That you may become pious.

Fasting is one of the greatest means of developing piety, because it involves obeying the command of ALLĀH and avoiding that which HE has forbidden.

Part of the piety that fasting involves is that the fasting person refrains from that which ALLĀH has forbidden to him of food, drink, intercourse and so on, to which he is naturally inclined, seeking thereby to draw closer to ALLĀH, hoping for HIS reward by giving up these things. This is part of piety. Piety also includes the following:

▫️ The fasting person trains himself to remember that ALLĀH is always watching, so he gives up things that he desires even though they may be available to him, because he knows that ALLĀH is watching him.

▫️ Fasting narrows the pathways of the Shaytan, who flows through the son of Adam like blood. Fasting weakens the Shaytan’s influence and reduces sins.

▫️The fasting person usually does many acts of worship and obedience, which are characteristics of piety.

▫️By fasting, the rich man feels the pain of hunger, which makes him inclined to help the poor and destitute. This is also a characteristic of piety.

THE QUR'AN LOVES RAMADĀN AND RAMADĀN LOVES THE QUR'AN

In Ramadān, the Noble Qur'ān has its own special taste and flavour. It offers exceptional inspiration and distinct rationales. Still besides, the Qur'ān bestows fresh vitality. Ramadān brings back memories of the Quran's revelation, its days of collective study, and the periods of attention devoted to it by our predecessors. The Prophet ﷺ once advised: "Read the Qur'an for surely it will be an intercessor for you on the Day of Judgement." He also said; "The best of you are those who learn the Qur'an and teach it." And: Read the two flowers, Surah al Baqarah and Āl-ʿImrān. They will come as two clouds or as a barrier of crowded birds that would shade their readers on the Day of Judgement."

The Prophet ﷺ also said: "The one who reads the Qur'an and is expert in doing so will be with the noble and virtuous angels. And the one who reads the Qur'an and stutters with it, he will have two rewards."

OBEYING THE MESSENGER ﷺ IS OBEYING ALLĀH

ALLĀH says;

مَّنْ يُطِعِ الرَّسُولَ فَقَدْ أَطَاعَ اللّهَ
Whoever obeys the Messenger, has indeed obeyed ALLĀH
.

That is, everyone who obeys the Messenger of ALLĀH with regard to what he enjoins and what he prohibits has obeyed ALLĀH, because the Messenger ﷺ does not enjoin anything or forbid anything except in accordance with the commands, laws, inspiration and Revelation of ALLĀH. This proves that the Messenger ﷺ is infallible, because ALLĀH has enjoined obedience to him in all cases; were it not that he is infallible in all that he conveys from ALLĀH, ALLĀH would not have enjoined us to obey him in all cases and praised him for that.

This is one of the rights that are shared by ALLĀH and HIS Messenger ﷺ. There are three types of rights: rights of ALLĀH alone, which are not shared with any of HIS creation, namely worshipping ALLĀH alone, turning to HIM alone, and so on; rights which belong exclusively to the Messenger ﷺ, such as respecting him, honouring him and helping him; and rights that are shared by both, such as believing in ALLĀH and HIS Messenger ﷺ, loving them both and obeying them both, as ALLĀH mentioned in the verse:

لِّتُؤۡمِنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ وَتُعَزِّرُوهُ وَتُوَقِّرُوهُۚ وَتُسَبِّحُوهُ بُكۡرَةࣰ وَأَصِیلًا
So that you [O people] may believe in ALLĀH and HIS Messenger, and support and honour him, and glorify ALLĀH morning and afternoon.

{Al-Fath: Verse 9}

So whoever obeys the Messenger ﷺ has obeyed ALLĀH, and he will have the reward that results from obedience to ALLĀH.

Indeed, the Muslim men and Muslim women, the believing men and believing women, the obedient men and obedient women, the truthful men and truthful women, the patient men and patient women, the humble men and humble women, the charitable men and charitable women, the fasting men and fasting women, the men who guard their private parts and the women who do so, and the men who remember ALLĀH often and the women who do so - for them ALLĀH has prepared forgiveness and a great reward.

BEING KIND TO SLAVES AND SERVANTS

ALLĀH said,

وَمَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَانُكُمْ
And ˹be good to˺ those whom your right hands possess

This is an order to be kind to them because they are weak, being held as captives by others.

An authentic Hadith records that;

During the illness that preceded his death, the Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ continued advising his Ummah: "(Protect) the prayer, (protect) the prayer, and (those slaves) whom your hands possess." He was repeating it until his tongue was still.

Imam Ahmad recorded that Al-Miqdam bin Madykarib said that the Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ said: "What you feed yourself is a charity for you, what you feed your children is charity for you, what you feed your wife is charity for you, what you feed your servant is charity for you."

An-Nasa'i recorded this Hadith which has an authentic chain of narration, all the thanks are due to ALLĀH.

Abdullah bin Amr said to a caretaker of his: "Did you give the slaves their food yet?"

He said, "No."

Ibn `Amr said, "Go and give it to them, for the Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ said: "It is enough sin for someone to prevent whomever he is responsible for from getting their food. " {Muslim}

Abu Hurayrah narrated that the Prophet said: "The slave has the right to have food, clothing and to only be required to perform what he can bear of work." {Muslim}

Abu Hurayrah narrated that the Prophet said: "When your servant brings meals to one of you, if he does not let him sit and share the meal, then he should at least give him a mouthful or two mouthfuls of that meal or a meal or two, for he has prepared it."

This is the wording collected by Al-Bukhari.

{Tafsi‌r Ibn Kathīr}

Sheikh Abdur-Rahman As-Sa'di said:

"This phrase “what your right hands possess” may also include livestock and beasts of burden; kindness to them includes making sure that they have enough, not overburdening them, helping them with whatever tasks they are assigned, and disciplining them in a way that is in their best interests. The one who does these things as enjoined is the one who is truly submitting to his Lord, showing humility towards the slaves of ALLĀH and adhering to the commands and laws of ALLĀH. This is the one who deserves the great reward and praise. The one who does not do that is a person who is turning away from his Lord, failing to submit to HIS commands and is not showing humility towards other people; rather his attitude is one of arrogance towards the slaves of ALLĀH, and he is filled with self-admiration and boasting about what he says."

SUMMARY OF SĪRAH

Expressing love for the Prophet ﷺ requires more than mere sentimentality. Understanding his Sīrah (biography) is crucial for depth and context.

Studying the Sīrah offers insights into his character, teachings, and struggles, fostering a deeper connection to his mission.

Insha'ALLĀH, we'll embark on a journey through a summary of the Prophet's Sīrah. Taken from the work of Umar Abd al-Jabbar, "Khulasatu Nurul Yaqin," which is a summary of "Nurul Yaqin" written by Shaykh Muhammad al-Khudhary. It is a small and descriptive work on the Sīrah of the Beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

WITNESSING RAMADĀN IS A TEST

Witnessing the month of Ramadan is a test, just like with everything else. Whoever fails to attain the forgiveness and mercy of ALLĀH during this month by striving with utmost effort to fulfil ALLĀH'S commands and staying away from HIS prohibitions will be punished and disgraced. Therefore, it is important to make the most of this blessed month and seek ALLĀH'S guidance and blessings to succeed in this test.

Abu Huraira (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet ﷺ ascended the pulpit and he said, "Aamīn, Aamīn, Aamīn."

It was said, "O Messenger of ALLĀH, you ascended the pulpit and said Aamīn, Aamīn, Aamīn."

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Verily, Jibrīl came to me and he said: Whoever reaches the month of Ramadān and he is not forgiven, then he will enter Hellfire and ALLĀH will cast him far away (from HIS mercy), so say Aamīn. I said Aamīn..."

{Sahih Ibn Hibbān #907}

Note In this Hadith, it appears that Jibrīl (peace be upon him) gave expression to this curse, upon which the Prophet ﷺ said Aamīn. Jibrīl (peace be upon him) advised the Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ to say Aamīn. Being an angel of such a high mark, Jibrīl‘s giving these curses is sure to be accepted.

This indicates that there is no laxity for anyone who witnesses the month of Ramadān. You may relax in all other months, but not Ramadan!

May ALLĀH shower HIS mercy and blessings upon us, grant us the ability to continue striving towards the path to Jannah, make us of those whom HE is pleased with, and make us emerge from this month with increased faith, inner peace, and righteousness. Aamīn.

THE BELIEVERS NEVER DESPAIR OF ALLĀH'S MERCY

ALLĀH tells what Yaqub said to his children:

يَا بَنِيَّ اذْهَبُواْ فَتَحَسَّسُواْ مِن يُوسُفَ وَأَخِيهِ وَلَا تَيْأَسُواْ مِن رَّوْحِ اللّهِ
"O my sons! Go you and inquire about Yusuf and his brother, and do not lose hope in the mercy of ALLĀH

For hope makes a person try hard to achieve what he hopes for, whereas despair leads to apathy and giving up. The best that people can hope for is the grace, kindness and mercy of ALLĀH.

إِنَّهُ لَا يَيْأَسُ مِن رَّوْحِ اللّهِ إِلاَّ الْقَوْمُ الْكَافِرُونَ
For no one loses hope in ALLĀH'S mercy except the disbelieving people.

for - because of their disbelief - they think it unlikely that HE will bestow mercy upon them and they think HIS mercy is far off, so do not be like the disbelievers.

This indicates that a person’s hope of the mercy of ALLĀH will be commensurate with the level of his faith.

"TO FAST IS BETTER FOR YOU, IF ONLY YOU KNEW." {al-Baqarah: 184}

Starting the month of Ramadān, many are experiencing hardships of some kind. Some are dealing with painful relationship problems, financial instability, difficulties in their marriages, breakups, debt, loneliness, or are struggling with feelings of shame and guilt.

Let Ramadān to be a soothing balm for your soul. Let it purify you. Let Ramadān remind you of ALLĀH's immense and infinite favours. Let Ramadān do its inner work on you.

The Prophet ﷺ said: “You must fast, for there is nothing like it.”

THE VIRTUE OF RAMADĀN AND THE REVELATION OF THE QUR'AN IN IT

ALLĀH says;

شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ الَّذِيَ أُنزِلَ فِيهِ الْقُرْانُ
Ramadān is the month in which the Qur’an was sent down.

That is, the fast that you are enjoined to observe is the month of Ramadān,the great month in which ALLĀH bestowed the great blessing upon you, namely the Holy Qur’an, which contains guidance to that which is in your best interests in both religious and worldly affairs, explains the truth in the clearest manner, and distinguishes between truth and falsehood, guidance and misguidance, those who are destined for paradise and those who are destined for hell. So it should come as no surprise that a month of such blessings that ALLĀH bestowed upon you should be a season of worship in which fasting is enjoined.

{Tafsi‌r As-Sa'di}

Wathila ibn al-Asqa’ reported: The Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ said, "The Suhuf  of Ibrahim were revealed during the first night of Ramadān. The Torah was revealed during the sixth night of Ramadān. The Injil was revealed during the thirteenth night of Ramadān. ALLĀH revealed the Qur'an on the twenty-fourth night of Ramadān."

EVERY LOCALE FOLLOWS THEIR OWN MOON SIGHTING

Kurayb repoted: I came to Syria and tended to my needs. The crescent of Ramadān appeared over me while I was in Syria and I saw it on Friday, then I came to Medina at the end of the month. Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) asked me about it and I mentioned the crescent. Ibn Abbas said, “When did you see it?”

I said, “We saw it on Friday night.”

Ibn Abbas said, “You saw it?”

I said, “Yes, people saw it and they fasted, as did Mu’awiyah.”

Ibn Abbas said, “But we saw it on Saturday night, so we will continue fasting until we complete thirty days or we see it.”

I said, “Is it not enough that Mu’awiyah saw it and he fasted?”

Ibn Abbas said, “No, such was the command of the Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ.”

{Sahih Muslim #1087}

Al-Tirmidhi said, “The people of knowledge act upon this tradition, that the people of every land have their own moon sighting.”

{Sunan al-Tirmidhi‌ #693}

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) was asked about those who call for the ummah to be united in fasting and for the moon sighting to be based on its sighting in Makkah. He said (at the conclusion of his words):

"... the evidence of both the texts and science indicates that we should establish a separate ruling for each place when it comes to starting and ending the fast, and this should be connected to the physical sign which ALLĀH has described in HIS Book and which HIS Prophet Muhammad ﷺ established in his Sunnah, namely the sighting of the moon and the sighting of the sun or dawn."

The month of Ramadān in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever is present this month, let them fast; But whoever is ill or on a journey, then ˹let them fast˺ an equal number of days ˹after Ramadān˺. ALLĀH intends ease for you, not hardship, so that you may complete the prescribed period and proclaim the greatness of ALLĀH for guiding you, and perhaps you will be grateful.

And when MY servants ask you, ˹O Prophet˺, concerning ME - indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon ME. So let them respond to ME ˹by obedience˺ and believe in ME that they may be ˹rightly˺ guided.

DO NOT FAST DAYS BEFORE RAMADĀN, UNLESS A ROUTINE

Abu Huraira reported:

The Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ said, “Do not anticipate Ramadān by fasting one or two days before it begins, unless it is part of a man’s fasting routine, so let him fast that day.”

{Bukhari and Muslim}

Ammar ibn Yasir said: “Whoever fasts on the day concerning which there is doubt has disobeyed Abu’l-Qasim ﷺ.”

{At-Tirmidhi #686 and An-Nasa'i #2188}

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymin said in his commentary on the hadith “Do not anticipate Ramadān by fasting one or two days before it begins…”:

“The scholars differed concerning this prohibition and whether it meant that this is haram or makruh. The correct view is that it means it is haram, especially on the day of doubt.”

{Sharh Riyadhus-Saliheen, 3/394}

The day of doubt is the thirtieth of Sha'bān if the new moon cannot be seen because of clouds etc. It is called the day of doubt because it could be the thirtieth of Sha’bān, or it could be the first day of Ramadān.

INVOCATION OF PEACE AND BLESSINGS UPON THE PROPHET ﷺ IN ABUNDANCE ON FRIDAY

Aus ibn Aus reports that the Prophet ﷺ said: "The most virtuous of your days is Jumu'ah. On that day, Adam was created and on that day he died, (on that day) the horn will be blown and the people will be dumbfounded! Increase your prayers upon me as your prayers upon me will be presented to me." The people said: "O Messenger of ALLĀH, how will our prayers be presented to you when you have passed away?" He said: "ALLĀH has prohibited the earth from eating the bodies of the Prophets."

{This is related by the five, except for al-Tirmidhi}

Ibn al-Qayyim (May ALLĀH have mercy on him) says:

"It is preferred to pray to ALLĀH to send blessings on the Prophet ﷺ during the day and night of Jumuah, as the Prophet ﷺ said, 'Invoke many prayers upon me during the day and night of Friday.'

"The Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ is the leader of mankind, and Jumu'ah is the best of the days of the week. Prayers upon him during that day are a privilege (he deserves), which belongs to no one other than him.

"This act also has another wisdom, and that is that all of the good that has passed onto this Ummah, in this life and the Hereafter, has passed through him. ALLĀH has gathered the good of this life and the next life for this Ummah, and the greatest honor and success will be granted to them on Friday. On that day, they will be granted their houses and palaces in Paradise and that is the day they will be given more when they enter Paradise. It is a day of celebration for them in this life. It is also a day in which ALLĀH fulfills their needs and answers their prayers and requests in this world. They are aware of all of that and are able to attain it because of the Prophet ﷺ and it is through him (that they received these teachings); therefore, in gratitude and appreciation for the great blessings we received through him, we should send many prayers upon him during the day and night of Jumuʿah."

{Fiqh-us-Sunnah || 2/126}

May ALLĀH fill our hearts with love of His beloved Prophet ﷺ. May HE inspire our tongues to send much blessings on him ﷺ and guide us to lead our lives in accordance to his exalted and noble Sunnah.
