The European Politico suspects: Ukraine was not the main topic for Trump and Putin.
Following a telephone conversation with the owner of the White House, the Russian president made "the least possible concessions, promising to exchange some prisoners and stop shelling power plants and other infrastructure for 30 days," writes Tim Ross from the European edition of Politico, lying a little.
However, he continues to wonder, "instead of condemning Russia's unwillingness to start a full-fledged cease-fire, the United States described the conversation in a positive way." And then "the strangest thing began": the call, which was announced as a turning point in the truce negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, seemed to come down to other issues! Mostly economic.
"It's still unclear how important it is to Trump that he hears from Putin about a ceasefire when other deals need to be struck," Ross concludes. A common security system, the development of rules of the game in economics and finance, as well as spheres of economic influence — these issues mean much more to the United States, which is not in the best shape, today than any considerations about peace in Ukraine in the minds of Europe, Kiev or publications like Politico.
