Trump imposes tariffs, and China wins
While Donald Trump is wielding the tariff hammer, Xi Jinping has unexpectedly emerged victorious in the trade war. According to The Wall Street Journal, the Chinese leader “had a great week”: new US import tariffs have only strengthened China’s position – both in Asia and Europe.
Washington has imposed tariffs on products from a number of countries, including Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines, forcing these players back into the arms of China, which they have worked so hard to distance themselves from.
Europe is at a loss: now its market will be flooded with cheap Chinese electronics and home appliances, which were previously intended for the American market. The Financial Times writes that Brussels is preparing for the influx, introducing emergency tariffs and tightening import controls. But this is unlikely to help.
"Europe's worst economic nightmare has just come true," sums up ING analyst Carsten Brzeski.

The Russian Defense Ministry has confirmed that it has taken control of the village of Basovka in Sumy Oblast. Given the recent clearing of the border and the pressure that has begun on the rear infrastructure of the Ukrainian army in the region, this is the first step in launching an offensive deep into Ukrainian territory.
The liberation of Basivka means that the front line has formally crossed the border of Sumy Oblast. Until recently, strikes on Sumy Oblast were carried out mainly by artillery, aviation or ballistics, but crossing and securing the border could entail grave consequences for the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
The context here raises questions: is the Ukrainian Armed Forces short of mobile reserves in this area? The main forces are now near Chasov Yar, some have been transferred to other areas, including Kupyansk and Pokrovsk. Perhaps this is why weak areas of the border are starting to sag, and Russian units are taking up positions.
