Reddit DevOps. #devops Thanks @reddit2telegram and @r_channels
Let's raise a glass to the Salesforce peeps right now. But QA next time eh?
Salesforce outage after pushing a bug which broke auth. Quickly rolled back and services restored.
There's a poor dev out there somewhere having a very bad day right now

Any automation before Pull Request?
Upon Pull Request...
Do you run automation and then notify the reviewer that it’s “all clear” to do the code review?
Or, do you just let the reviewer review based on the PR and then if it’s approved/merged, then the automation happens?
I guess I’m trying to figure out if anyone thinks it’s overkill or pointless to do any automation before the code review.

For everyone here thats been on the job market, how has your experience been?
I have been on the market for 6+ months and have definitely seen it all. I have had some final rounds before, had a verbal offer given to me and then was ghosted, and am still at it. At this point, I haven taken close to 40 interviews. I will be taking a 1 hour final round panel interview tomorrow which I am hoping goes well.
How are you guys doing?

Recently failed a DevOps Interview
I was recently invited to do a DevOps Interview in one of the most prestigous companies to work for in my country.
However, I failed at the technical interview stage but I shrugged it because I knew am not really that solid when it comes to DevOps, and the fact that the company probably demands more than just basics (they deal with very large scale projects with millions of users) and also after all, they are the ones who approached me. So it was not something that really was in my mind at the time.
But to my surprise, they go back to me after a couple of days and said that i'll have the opportunity to redo the interview in a couple of months but before the end of the year.
I know the timeline might not be enough to become a DevOps guru, considering I also have a demanding full time job but am ready to put in some extra hours to learn.
So what are some of the freely available content and techniques(most important) that I might use to grasp DevOps from beginner to intermediate? I'm talking about deployments, working with different architectures e.g. microservice, ensuring data consistency, logging and monitoring etc. as these are some of the few areas I was asked.
Below is my background, am sure it will help.
Me:
I have a background in software engineering, and also responsible for managing my current company's pipeline which is very simple because we deal with small scale projects and therefore we also have a small tech team. This limits my on-the-job-learning.
However, starting this year I did a short DevOps course (which introduced me to the DevOps concepts, containerization and automation basics). It was more like a beginner's course. All with the intention to transition to DevOps sometime. So this is a great opportunity to do that.

Edit: I did ask them, this what they use - AWS, Harness, CircleCI, Groovy, GitHub Actions, Confluence, Kubernetes, Terraform, Kubernetes, Docker

*** Sorry for any bad english/grammar.

12 years experience in Kubernetes and Terraform wanted 🤦
A recruiter contacts me on LinkedIn saying he has a client who is looking for a candidate with DevOps experience, and needs someone with 12 years of Kubernetes and Terraform experience.
I tell him that both Kubernetes and Terraform were created in 2014. So its only been 9 years since these technologies existed, and therefore you will not find anyone with more than 9 years of experience.
I also tell him that I have been working with both Kubernetes and Terraform the last 5 years in my current job.
Recruiter tells me that the client he is working for is adamant about the number of years of experience. And then he asks me if I know a candidate who is more suitable.
I refer my friend who previously worked for Google on the Borg team back in 2013.
Later I come to know my friend's CV was also rejected by the recruiter and not even forwarded to this adamant client of theirs.

Devops is not entry level
Really just want to vent.
I’m a software engineer, started out as a sysadmin 15 years back, worked my way up, had a few system engineer / devops type roles. I’ve done them all, I’ve seen it all.
Today I completed the 7th interview to find a devops engineer, and boy, am I getting depressed.
The number of candidates, that simply do not understand the most simplistic and foundational type questions, is mind boggling.
We’re offering to pay you upwards of $130,000, and you have no grasp of:
- how networking / routing works
- what common ports are
- how to diagnose a slow Linux machine
- how to check running processes
- what happens when you send a request to Google.com
- the difference between a stateless and stateful firewall
- how a web server works under the hood
- how to check disk space / free mem on a Linux machine (?!?!???)
- how DNS works (?!?!?!?)
- the different record types and their purpose
- how terraform works
Honestly, I’m gobsmacked that anyone can even attempt an interview and not even understand how to use bash and administer a Linux machine.
Last week a candidate told us he’d use ChatGPT or Google to find the answer. Ok, I mean, it’s a valid answer, but when you have no understanding of the fundamentals, it’s an utterly horrific answer.
EDIT: forgot to mention. One candidate, couldn’t name more than 1 Linux distro…. ONE!!!
EDIT: apologies for the title. I didn’t want that. You’ve probably seen that title 1,000,000 times by now. But I couldn’t change it when I posted this.
EDIT: The candidate will be London based. So £102k. Which is typical for London.

Weirdest issue of my career
Posting here to see if anyone here have faced a similar issue. We have an application running on kubernetes exposed via NodePort. An F5 load balancer is responsible for sending requests to our application in the specified NodePort.
Recently the web app (angular application served via nginx) is accessible via Mac and Linux but on Windows we are getting a connection reset.
We are clueless as to why this is happening.
Sometimes on resetting the entire cluster the website will randomly start working on windows. And then fail if we try to reset the application again.
Also, when we connect to Cloudflare VPN the website is accessible on Windows, without a VPN it does not work on windows but works on Linux and Mac OS.
The F5 load balancer is external to our setup and something we don't have access to (It's a client system)
Any help would be appreciated, pulling my hair out with every minute that passes with this issue 🥲

what are cdn's made of?
Can someone explain me how cdn servers are created? I know how cdn's work and what they do, but I want to know how it is created, is it a normal server with some programming languages that do the redirections or is it more hardware specific?

According to Levels.fyi compensation report, DevOps Engineers have a median salary 22% lower than Site Reliability Engineers. Time for us to all change our titles over?
https://www.levels.fyi/blog/2023-mid-year-report.html
Ive been both, nobody who hires seems to know or care about any perceived differences and neither do I. However, SREs get a median salary of $194k while DevOps median salary is $150k. HMMM

Assessing devops / Cloud engineer
I went to the dark side and moved into a manager role. I've managed to get a new DevOps role opened up on my team and wondering how do you go about trying to get a feel for someone's technical abilities? Or what sort of questions or scenarios would you want asked to help you show case your technical knowledge?
As some background, we are an AWS shop with all IaC done in terraform with devops reponsible for a ton of different automations written in python and golang.

Going back into DevOps after 1.5 years. What did I miss?
As the title decribes, about 1 year and 6 months ago I left DevOps behind to persue a career in an adjacent field (databases). Unfortunately I was laid off due to business restructuring. After some consideration I've decided I want to get back into DevOps.
What did I miss while I was gone? Any hot new tools everyone is using? Is Terraform still cool?

How do you go against bad practices?
So, I don't want this to be a long post but my last journey in a company (18) Month has been an absolute nightmare, I tried my darnest to get them to adapt the "DevOps" mentality but it feels like they're adamant to go with bad practices.

small example: i introduce a stage in CI that scans packages for security vulnerabilities, first time it fails, they comment out the stage from the pipeline. (tons more scenarios like this that makes you want to pull your hair, this images illustrates what i mean https://i.imgflip.com/1hgwi3.jpg?a470256)

i don't know if i attribute this to laziness or maliciousness but i've proven to them time and time again that there is a reason for implementing such things & shown the benefits on why we need to do things a certain way but it almost always falls on deaf ears.

my question i suppose is what could i have done better?
my background in case it's relevant: 5 years automating / managing infra deployment + some swe tasks

Is this authentication method safe and sane?
First things first: I love programming, but I hate Devops. I'm bad at it. Most of my experience is in writing hobby simulation projects that are math and physics heavy. But I recently started doing a little more standard development for an old friend's company.
I'm building an api and tool that will be used internally. They have a developer who's written their main backend already using Grails. I'm personally a huge fan of Rust, so I've written my api in rust. It works great so far. I haven't deployed it yet though, because it has no authentication.
The existing backend service does have auth. There's an endpoint you can send user/pass to and get back an Auth token and a refresh token. The Auth token is sent with all subsequent requests, and the refresh token is sent periodically to stay logged in and receive a fresh Auth token. His tokens are valid for 5 minutes, so a refresh needs to be sent before the tokens expire. Nothing too complicated there.
My service basically allows the user to edit a data structure before finally sending it over to the other service.
I'm thinking it would be nice for my api to use the same authentication as his to simplify logging in.
Here's my idea:
I'll create an api endpoint in my service that expects a user/pass. I'll forward this to his login endpoint and get back the authentication and refresh tokens. I will save both of these tokens in memory in my api service. I will then send back both tokens to my user.
Further requests to my api should include these tokens. I can check my in memory cache to see if the Auth token is valid. I can also keep track of how long the tokens have left until expiration. If they will expire soon, I send a refresh request to his api to aquire new tokens.
This should keep the Auth alive until I need to send the final request to his api, right? And since I'm just using his authentication that's already functional, it will take minimal work to get it up and running. The other benefit is that my api will work with all existing accounts in his system.
Does this setup make sense? Am I missing something obvious I should consider? Any feedback is appreciated greatly.
Bonus question: what are some good resources where I can learn about authentication in general? I don't even know what to call his method of auth, but I'm sure it has a name.
Thanks in advance.

Setting up K3S cluster over VPN
Hello everyone, I've been working on configuring a high-availability K3S Cluster over a VPN to eliminate the need for NAT and enhance security. However, I've encountered some challenges that I'm seeking help with.
In short, I'm struggling with joining other control planes and establishing communication between them. I've experimented with different solutions including Kilo, Netmaker, Tailscale or Wireguard setups. While Kilo allowed me to join the control planes, I faced a '500 Internal Server Error' issue when checking the readiness of the master server.
I've also managed to join control planes using an external database like Postgres, but this has led to another issue: the nodes aren't able to establish connections with each other, impacting activities like fetching logs.
If anyone has experience with setting up a K3S Cluster over a VPN and has insights on resolving these issues, I would greatly appreciate your assistance. Thank you in advance!

How are you protecting your staging environment(s) for your web apps?
Hello everyone,
I've been thinking about the security of staging environments for web apps.
By "staging environment" I'm referring to any non-production environment that you need to access over HTTPS, either ephemeral or long-living and potentially shared. I'm interested in understanding the strategies you're employing to safeguard these environments.
For instance, do you utilize basic authentication? If yes, I'm curious about your approach to managing usernames and passwords. Alternatively, are you relying on a VPN for security? Or perhaps you're using a different method altogether?
Thanks!

Is it reasonable to expect a devops expert to be proficient with Apache server optimization?
Hello,
Just a quick question about reasonable expectations.
As a WordPress website designer with some coding coding skills, I know that it is not unreasonable to expect that a Jr. level WordPress design should know some basic HTML/CSS/JavaScript
And I've found that employers are expecting WordPress devs in 2023 to also know React and Gutenberg Blocks.
But, I only have a few months experience with learning devops concepts (not even touching anything about CI/CD or AWS, just bash and Powershell scripting with some multi something command that automatically generates a virtual machine).
Is it reasonable for an employer to expect a Jr. Devops candidate to have Apache web server config & performance optimization skills? Is it reasonable to expect this from a Sr. Devops engineer?
Or another way to ask the question:
If I needed expert help configuring Apache for website performance and optimization, is a devops person the right role to consult?
Thanks for any help

What skills did you find hardest to learn?
Some things have come super easy to me. I found docker, Ansible, IAC, etc super easy to grasp. But ask me about intricate Linux questions and I struggle - even though I've been using linux for over half a decade.

“Smart” Links in Azure DevOps?
This is probably a very basic question but how do you copy/paste links so that it’s not the full url, just the work item name?
An example is pasting a link to a feature in an email would normally contain the entire url. I just need a way to only paste the link with just the name of the feature. I know it’s possible, just don’t know how. Thanks!
